The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 355. Fields of Erenwood
Chapter 355: 355. Fields of Erenwood
Mauve made her way out of the Rosenberg residence feeling deflated. She had barely gotten enough sleep and had just spent most of her night tossing and turning in bed.
"Right this way, Princess," Galath said, opening the door to the carriage so that she could go in.
"Thank you," she said to him as she used his arm as support to lift herself.
"I will miss you," Rosa said with her hand to her chest. Her eyes were bigger and she looked like she was on the verge of tears.
"I will miss you too," Mauve replied with a smile.
"Be safe," she cried. Her lower lips quivered and Mauve almost flew out of the carriage to hug the little girl.
She wished she had something to give her. She could tell Ross would be happy to receive anything but unfortunately, she didn’t personally own anything worth sharing.
Mauve brought her hand to her neck, feeling the silk scarf. It was the same one Mill had tied around her neck the day she was leaving.
She thought about it for only a second before she started taking it off. "I want you to have it," she said. "It’s not much but a vampire gave it to me."
Rosa’s hands fell to her sides and her mouth fell open. "Are you sure about this? You can’t give this to me."
Mauve shrugged, "Sure I can. Unless you don’t want it."
"I absolutely want it," the child said, snatching it out of Mauve’s outstretched hand.
Mauve chuckled, "Well, I am glad you like it. Something to remember me by."
"I will cherish it," Rosa said with a bright smile.
Mauve wanted to say there was no need to, it just felt weird without giving the child anything. She wished she did have something worth more.
"And don’t forget me. It was really nice meeting you."
"I wouldn’t dare, Princess. Have a seat trip," she waved with her free hand as she clutched the scarf to herself.
Mauve remembered the first time she had given someone a gift, coincidentally a scarf too and it hadn’t turned out well. However, this wasn’t so bad. It felt good to see how appreciative Rosa was to something so little.
"Bye," Mauve said as the carriage started.
She poked her head out of the window, waving at Rosa who almost ran after her but thankfully her maid stopped her.
The child didn’t stop waving until they were out of the castle’s gate. Mauve leaned on her chair with a sigh.
She hasn’t had a moment to catch herself. Things were certainly happening faster than she could control.
She winced as she remembered Jean’s words. No wonder Jael had no issues saying those hurtful things to her and chasing her off like she was a pest.
She looked out the window trying to dwell on something else. She didn’t want to think about it, didn’t want to hate it. She just wanted to forget.
She wondered how long she would be able to stay in her father’s house and keep this dissolution of her marriage a secret.
Mauve took a deep breath, she just wanted to curl up in a familiar cold set of arms and cry. She wanted his hands on her hair and to tell her he didn’t care that she wasn’t a princess.
Why did he say she was his if it was going to turn out like this? And she thought she had finally found a home.
Mauve leaned her head against the headboard, she knew if she had any tears left she would cry but right now she was just deflated and wanted to forget everything.
She knew she wouldn’t and as pathetic as she was, a huge part of her was holding out hope. She must be out of her mind, with how messy everything was.
The carriage stopped suddenly and Mauve’s eyes flew open, she must have dozed out at some point. She wasn’t surprised, she hadn’t been able to sleep properly in days.
She rubbed her eyes as she sat upright, just as Galath threw the door of her carriage open. She gave him a tired smile.
"Is something wrong?" She asked, still rubbing her eyes. "Why did you stop?" She brought her hands down to her sides as she waited for a reply.
"It’s almost one and I figured we could stop for lunch, give the horses a few minutes of rest and some grass to eat. I know we changed the carriage horses at the Aristocrat’s residence but I don’t want them to tire quickly. We still have a while to go."
Mauve nodded and stretched out her hand to him. He accepted and helped her out of the carriage. She staggered a little and had to use his chest to steady herself.
He felt sturdy under her palm but her mind didn’t take note of this. "Sorry," she said and moved away from him, standing on her own.
"No," Galath said with color on his face. "It’s my own fault, I should have helped you down properly."
She smiled at him and looked away, the scenery called out to her. It was a huge field with trees scattered around.
The sun was high up in the sky and it hurt her eyes to look but it didn’t take out how beautiful the view before her was.
"It’s beautiful," she whispered before she could help herself.
"Isn’t it?" Galath said with his gaze on her. "These are the fields of Erenwood. No matter the season they always manage to retain their green color, only that the shades might change."
Mauve couldn’t remember if she had seen it on her way out of the castle, it would have been hard to tell after all her journey had been only at night, taking note of the view was completely out of the question.
"Erenwood," she repeated.
Erenwood was known for its woods. They were a small prosperous town.
She didn’t really know much about Greenham kingdom.
Aside from her father’s castle, she wasn’t familiar with anywhere else. She knew a few names and what the town or village was known for but that was it.
"Yes, the town’s not far from here. We should be able to cut through it when we continue her journey. That should definitely shorten our travel by a full day."
So that’s what was happening. Traveling with a knight sure made her journey much easier. At this rate, she might get to the castle in a few days, compared to how long the journey took last time.
They couldn’t go through villages and the inns wouldn’t accept them but now she was sleeping in Lord’s houses and having lunch in a beautiful field.
"That’s good news," she said and walked past him.
The horses were already grazing on the grass. She walked to the nearest set of trees and sat underneath it.
They provided a good enough shade from the sun not to mention the breeze. Mauve felt it run through her hair. This was a nice place.
Galath poked his head inside the carriage and brought out a basket. "Lady Laura packed this up for you, she said to eat it for lunch."
"She did?" Mauve asked with a little gasp. "That’s so lovely of her."
"Yeah," Galath said half-heartedly as he tore his gaze from her face.
He rolled out a piece of cloth for her to sit on, Mauve was grateful, the last time she had messed with grass, she had nothing but bites to show for it.
"Thank you," she mumbled and dropped on the makeshift mat."
He opened up the basket and Mauve was hit with a delicious smell. She could smell cake and some chicken.
Galath dished some out for her and she dug in without hesitation. At least her appetite was normal even if her sleeping schedule was completely nonexistent.
"You haven’t been getting enough sleep, have you?" Galath suddenly asked.
She paused her eating, catching Owen from the corner of her eyes as he herded the horses.
She brought her food down and looked at Galath. She shook her head. "Is it obvious?"
"Yeah, the circles under your eyes are getting more pronounced."
"Oh," Mauve said touching her face.
"Is something bothering you?" He asked.
He looked genuinely concerned and Mauve wondered what it would be like to share her problems with him.
"No, it must be try to switch from sleeping during the day to sleeping at night. I haven’t gotten used to it."
Galath squinted his eyes, he didn’t look convinced with her answer but at least he didn’t pester.
"How was living with the vampires, was it good?" He asked.
Mauve nodded, "Mostly." She didn’t want to give vague answers but she didn’t want to say too much. She was worried that she might give herself away before she realized.
"That’s not a good enough answer."
"It was better than I thought and I was treated alright."
"What if you didn’t have to go? Would you return, still?"
