Chapter 353. Dinner with the Rosenbergs

Chapter 353: 353. Dinner with the Rosenbergs

"Hello, Mauve."

Mauve heard a familiar voice and she slowly raised her head. "Jean, what are you doing here?"

Rosa frowned looking up at Mauve, "You know my uncle?" She asked.

"He is your uncle?"

"Yes," Rosa responded.

She looked from Rosa to Jean. She couldn’t really see the resemblance but there was no reason why they would lie.

"How are you, princess? It is good to see you again. I can see you’re much better."

Rosa and the guests seemed to be the only ones surprised that Mauve knew Jean, her parents seemed unfazed.

"I am, thank you so much. I am glad you got back safely, I was really worried."

"I did. How’s the wound?"

Mauve shrugged, "Completely healed. Aside from the scars, I can barely remember the injury."

She felt Galath stiffen at her words but he didn’t say anything. However, she was sure he was still shaken from seeing the scars.

"I am glad. I left in such a hurry that if there had been complications I wouldn’t have been able to go back in time."

"I am very fine. You were the best physician I could ask for."

Jean reddened slightly, "Thank you."

"I heard your wife is pregnant. Congratulations."

"T-thank you."

"Did you know before you left?"

He shook his head, "It wasn’t confirmed until I got back."

"Well, I wish you both the best."

"Why did you need a physician, Princess?" Rosa suddenly interrupted.

"Oh..." She paused, unsure how to tell the child she was viciously attacked by a paler.

That was definitely not a dinner topic. It was funny how she had wanted to avoid the topic completely but somehow it still came up.

"That’s enough pestering, Rosa." Her father spoke up. "Let the Princess enjoy her meal."

Mauve looked at the man with a bright smile for coming to her rescue.

Rosa pouted and sat upright. "It was just a simple question. It wasn’t like I was rude or anything."

"You can ask all the questions you want after dinner. For now, eat quietly."

"Yes, father," she replied but not before rolling her eyes.

She picked up her cutlery and dug into the food served in front of her. Mauve did the same. She took the first bite and felt the food melt on her tongue, it was truly delicious.

The dinner table wasn’t as crowded as she thought it would be and it was certainly way smaller.

The dining space at Jael’s castle was unnecessarily big. It was literally a hall and that was a bit ridiculous as they never used more than one table at once.

Aside from the Rosenberg family, herself Galath and Owen were the only other additions. She figured the rest of her entourage got their food elsewhere.

Laura Rosenberg had not been what she expected. The warm air around the woman was comforting. Mauve thought her daughter was the exact replica of her both in appearance and in act.

She blinked, she wondered if she looked like her mother. The only memory she could properly remember wasn’t a good one and her favorite memory of them was blurring out.

She couldn’t even remember her mother’s face or her name. She doubted she ever knew her name, all she called her was mama.

She forced the memory out of her head, it was too painful to think about. Memories of her mother were not something she dwelled on.

Desert came along and Mauve had a hearty serving of the cake. It was delicious.

"Would you like some more?" She heard Rosa ask after she finished her cake a little too quickly. "I can give you mine."

Mauve shook her head, "Thank you but I am afraid if I eat any more I’ll explode."

Rosa giggled, "I don’t think that’s possible."

"Well, we certainly don’t want to find out," she replied.

"You’re right. If you’re done eating, I could give you a tour of the house or better still we could go to my room and..."

"Rosa," he father said sternly. "Do not overwhelm the princess. She is only going to be here for a night. Let her get the rest she needs before she has to leave tomorrow."

Rosa stuck out her lower lips and rolled her eyes. "I didn’t say she had to do it. I was just making suggestions."

"And your suggestions are wonderful. You have been a great host. I will take that offer to see your room."

"You don’t have to indulge her, princess. The more you give in to what she wants, the more demands she is likely to make."

"It’s fine, I don’t mind really." Mauve grinned.

"And I don’t make demands!" Rosa yelled.

"Before that," Jean interrupted. "I was wondering if I could have a word with you."

Mauve turned her attention to Jean, "Of course."

"Privately," he added, his expression suddenly turned serious.

Mauve frowned, "I suppose. Is there somewhere we could go?" She asked no one in particular.

"Yes," he said, standing to his feet. "Would you come with me, please?"

Mauve nodded and got out of her seat. Galath gave her a quizzing look and for a second she thought he would come with her.

She didn’t know what this was about but Jean sounded serious and the fact that he was insistent about the private part made her very worried.

She gave the dining room one last look, her eyes met with Rosa and she looked like if Mauve gave her the word, she would rush out of her seat and go with her.

She turned away and walked out of the door. Jean didn’t stop walking until they got to a door. He pushed it open and Mauve could tell it was a drawing room.

The room was warm and the fireplace was in use. This was most likely a well used room. As soon as she walked in, Jean closed the door.

"Please sir," he said, rubbing his hands on pants.

"Okay," she said without arguing.

Considering how anxious Jean was about what he wanted to tell her, she would most likely need to be seated.
