Chapter 352: 352. He is a Physician
A soft knock drew Mauve’s attention to the door. She turned her head to the door when a voice called out to her. There was no need for that, she could already guess who was behind the door.
"Princess, it’s me," Rosa’s sharp voice echoed in the room.
Mauve turned to the maid brushing her hair, "Could you let her in?"
"Of course," she replied, bowing her head.
She took her hand away from Mauve’s hair and placed the brush on the dresser table before making her way to the door.
Before she could get to the door, Rosa let out another impatience knock. "I almost at the door, Milady," the maid responded.
"Hurry up," Rosa replied, the sound of her heels hitting the floor reached Mauve ears and she couldn’t help but smile.
The maid pulled the door open and Rosa rushed in, zooming past the maid and heading straight for where Mauve sat in the corner of the room.
"Hello," she said, stopping in front of Mauve with a bright smile. "Are you ready to go?"
"I think so," Mauve said, looking in the mirror and back at Rosa’s face. "I just need to get my hair done."
"Okay," she said. "I can wait."
"Won’t you have a seat?" Mauve asked when she realized the child intended to stand.
Rosa shook her head, "It would be faster if I wait like this."
"Are you sure?"
"It’s just for a few minutes, I am sure I can hold out."
"Well then if you insist." Rosa nodded and Mauve added, "I like your dress."
"You do?" She asked, spinning around to give Mauve a proper view.
"Uh huh. It’s very pretty."
"Thank you," she blushed. "I like your dress too."
"This old thing?" Mauve joked.
"It’s pretty, not old and we match," Rosa giggled.
"Now that you mentioned it, yes we do," Mauve replied, looking closely at Rosa’s dress.
They were dressed in similar color dresses except Mauve’s was a couple of shades darker.
She had chosen a long sleeved dress this time around. There was no need to make her scars the topic of conversation during dinner.
"This dress was a gift from my mother," Rosa went further to explain. "It was for my thirteenth birthday. I will be fourteen in about half a year. I know it’s too much to ask but if you could, would you come for my birthday?"
"Oh, there is still some time before your birthday. How about this? When it’s getting close enough, I will let you know if I will be in attendance or not."
Mauve didn’t want to make any promises. Besides, six months was a long time. Lots of things could happen in that time as she had found out.
"Really?" Rosa excitedly asked and threw herself onto Mauve interrupting the maid’s work.
"Milady," the maid cried.
"Sorry," Rosa said, chuckling as she pulled away from Mauve.
The maid returned to her hair and quickly did the finishing touches to it. She had tied Mauve’s hair upwards and she let it hang just a bit over her shoulders.
"Thank you," she mumbled as she got to her feet.
"Let’s go," Rosa squealed and took her hand. She didn’t even give the maid a chance to respond before pulling Mauve to the door.
"I guess I should let you know who would be at dinner," Rosa said as they walked out of the room.
"Anybody I haven’t met yet?" She asked.
"Yep, my mother, my brother and my uncle."
"You have a brother?" Mauve asked excitedly.
Rosa nodded, "He is nothing like me. He is a bit shy and can be annoying sometimes."
"Is he your younger brother?"
Rosa nodded.
"Wow! You’re a big sister."
Rosa chuckled, "Don’t say it like that."
"Are you two close?" Mauve asked.
"I don’t know, since he turned eight, he has been giving me the cold shoulder."
"Did you two fight?" She asked.
"Maybe," Rosa replied, turning away from Mauve.
"Oh, I am sure you will make up soon."
"Hmm, maybe. Anyway, my uncle doesn’t live with us. He is only staying for dinner and I am sure it is because you’re here. He is a physician and oh..." She dropped her voice to a whisper, "I heard his wife is pregnant."
"Oh, that’s wonderful news."
"I know, I am pretty excited."
"How about your mother?" Mauve asked.
"You don’t have to worry about mummy."
"I am not worried. What’s she like?"
"Quiet," Rosa chuckled. "She says I look like her only in appearance."
"She must be very beautiful."
Rosa blushed, "She is. Also, irrespective of how she acts, she is happy that you’re here."
Mauve nodded, she doubted there was any way Rosa’s mother would act that would piss her off. She was already letting Mauve stay in her house, that was kindness enough.
"We are here," Rosa announced as they stood in front of the doors of what was safe to assume was the dining room.
The child pushed the door open and Mauve was instantly hit with different aromas and each one of them smelt delicious. She felt her mouth water, she couldn’t wait to dive in.
Rosa grabbed her hand and pulled her into the room just as Mauve saw an older version of Rosa stand to her feet.
"Hello Princess, I hope my daughter isn’t causing you any problems." She gave Mauve a small curtsey.
"No, not at all. She has been absolutely delightful."
She nodded, "I am Laura Rosenberg, it’s nice to meet you again. I was at the wedding, I doubt you remember."
"I am so sorry, most of what happened was a blur."
"I am sure. Please, have a seat, don’t remain standing on my behalf."
"Thank you," She turned to the table and saw Galath tapping on the seat next to him.
She instinctively moved there and Rosa sat next to her. She giggled and leaned into Mauve.
"Hello, Mauve."
Mauve heard a familiar voice as she slowly raised her head. "Jean?"
