Chapter 318. Touching His Hair

Chapter 318: 318. Touching His Hair

Mauve sat on Jael’s bed with a ball of yarn on legs as she continued her work. It was a dark brown color. She had wanted to go with something colorful, however, Jael mostly wore dark colors and she wanted to give him something he could wear often.

The second meal finished about an hour ago and Jael had wanted her to accompany him to speak to the new vampires but there was no way she could do that.

She quickly came up with the excuse that she was tired. At first, she had thought Jael would decline and insisted she go with him but he had simply told her to get enough rest.

Now she was in his room working on the scarf she wanted to give him before the night ran out or better still tomorrow night. That should give her enough time to finish it up.

Mauve jerked as a knock rang out, without thinking she threw the scarf, needles and yarn down the side of the bed. She swore as she realized her error, Jael would never knock. He doesn’t even knock when he comes into her room, of course he wouldn’t do that in his.

She sighed, she really wanted to keep it a secret until she presented it to him. It wasn’t anything important but it would mean a lot to her if she could give him something.

"Come in," she said as she tried to get what she threw down the side of the bed.

She was still struggling to get it when Mill got to the other side of the bed. "What are you doing?" Mill asked in horror as she saw Mauve down the side of the bed at such an awkward angle.

"Got it!" She announced as she sat upright, proudly lifting the items high for Mill to see.

"What is that?" The vampire asked with a frown.

"The scarf I am making for Jael," she replied as she got back to work.

"It looks like you’re almost done," Mill said, leaning forward for a closer look.

Mauve nodded, "Though I think I took longer than I should have. I have been crocheting this forever."

"Considering, you just learnt how to do this. I’ll say you’re doing a pretty decent job."

"Decent?" Mauve turned to her with a horrified expression. "I am giving this to Jael, it should be better than just decent."

Mill chuckled, "Don’t panic just yet. It is a pretty good job. Or would you like me to call Yasmin?"

Mauve leaned against the headboard. She shook her head, the last thing she wanted to do was show this to an expert.

"I am fine, there is no need for that. I think I am managing just fine."

Mill nodded, "I am sure the Primus would love it."

Mauve nodded and looked down at the scarf. There were a few bumps and where she attached new yarn looked like it could be done better but overall it didn’t look like a bad job.

"I am glad you think so," she said to Mill and looked up at Mill. "Is there a reason you’re here?" She asked.

Mill shook her head, "Not particularly. I was curious about your whereabouts. I checked your room but you weren’t there and I decided to check here."

"Oh," Mauve said with a small smile. "Thanks for checking."

Mill shrugged, "Oh, don’t mention. This gave me something to do. Would you like something to drink then? Since you’re so busy."

"Mill, I am not that busy."

"Some snacks then, fruits?"

"I guess some fruits would be nice. It is a little monotonous to continually do this without any distractions."

"Alright then. I will get you something." Mill said and hopped to the door.

Mauve was still smiling when the door closed behind Mill. She bent her head and resumed. Suddenly, the door opened again.

"Did you forget something, Mill?" She asked as she slowly raised her head to look at the door.

Mauve tasted fear at the back of her throat when her gaze locked with Jael. She didn’t think, her body just moved and she tossed the items under the bed.

"Jael," she called, her pitch suspiciously high.

He frowned slightly as he walked toward her. She was sure he had seen her suspicious movement. She hoped he didn’t see exactly what she was hiding.

"What are you doing?" He asked, she could hear the concern in his voice.

"Oh, the pillow fell. It must have rolled off while I was sleeping, I just woke up."

Mauve swore as the words poured out of her mouth. As soon as she mentioned the pillow, the words had just rolled out of her mouth and she ended up lying about three things instead of one.

"Is that so?" Jael asked and climbed on to the bed.

She nodded, trying her best not to avoid his eyes. She was sure he could guess she was lying but there was no need to make it obvious.

"Yes," she said, nodding at his question.

"But you don’t look like you slept," he whispered and touched her chin.

Mauve shivered slightly and swallowed. "Are you sure about that?" She forced it out of her throat. "Maybe it’s because I didn’t sleep for long."

"You don’t have to try so hard to lie Mauve. You can keep your secrets." He chuckled.

"I am not lying," she said but there was no conviction in her words.

"Maybe," he said and kissed her lips.

He pulled away after a few seconds and looked into her eyes. Mauve blushed. He smirked and laid his head on her legs.

His silky hair spread over her dress, he really did have beautiful hair. She wondered what it would feel like against her fingers. As much as she wanted to touch it, she could bring herself to stretch out her hand.

"Mill said you asked for fruits."

Mauve paused for a second unsure of how to answer this. It didn’t sound like a question or a statement.

"Yeah, I am a bit hungry."

"I see, I told her to bring enough for two."

"Okay," she said and nodded. "Does that mean you’re done?"

Jael groaned and turned to his side so he could look at her face. "For now," he replied, his bright blue eyes taking her in.

Mauve looked everywhere except his eyes. How could he stare at her with such reckless abandon? She blushed as remembered what had happened in his study.

"How did it go?" She asked, looking down at him but refusing to meet his eyes.

"Boring," he said and yawned. "Danag didn’t look very pleased. I can’t blame him, he has his work cut out for him."

"Why?" She asked.

"We were sent a bunch of amateurs, only about three of them have any skills. That’s not good, we are going against Palers..." he paused, a slight frown appeared on his forehead.

"Is something wrong?" She asked, her eyes running all over his face as she tried to figure out what it could possibly be.

"Maybe I shouldn’t discuss this with you, it is a bit gnarly."

"No," Mauve said stubbornly. "I want to hear all about it."

Jael chuckled, "If you insist," he responded.

Mauve listened with bright eyes as Jael explained how the meeting went.

"Training should begin in two days," he responded. "The rest would most likely show up between now and tomorrow night." Jael groaned loudly at the end of his words.

Mauve nodded, "The castle would be full," she commented.

"I hate that, I can’t stand any of them but this is important." He stretched out his hand to touch her face. "I am getting rid of every Paler if it is the last thing I do."

She nodded and he pulled his hand away. Mauve didn’t realize what she was doing until she saw Jael’s surprise expression.

"I am so sorry," she said and pulled her hand away.

"No," he said and grabbed her hand. "You can touch my hair, I touch yours all the time."

"Are you sure?" She whispered.

Jael gaze lowered, "Mauve, I assure you, I want you to touch me any chance you get." He smirked and she blushed.

"Okay," she whispered and stretched out her hand. "It’s very silky and smooth," she said as she touched his hair again.

"Hmm," he whispered, closing his eyes against her touch.

"It’s so black too." She added, enjoying the feel of his hair against her finger.

"And longer, I have to cut it, at this rate, I’ll need to tie it up to get any work done."

"What? No, don’t cut it." She exclaimed.

Jael’s eyes flew open, "You don’t want me to cut it?"

She shook her head, "It would look really nice tied to the back."

Jael’s brows dipped, "Only you would think that."

"But if it gets in your way, you can cut it. You don’t have to do that for me."

He closed his eyes back and adjusted on her legs, "I’ll think about it."
