Chapter 305: 305. Not The Time For Research
Jael stepped out of the cave crouched down. His skin felt hot and soft, the cave had protected him from the sun but not the heat. He felt like he had dipped in steaming hot water.
"How do you feel, Sire? You look a bit red." Danag asked, standing a couple of feet away.
"That’s a compliment."
"I think that’s sunburn," Erick commented.
"Shut it, Erick," Jael responded.
He wasn’t sunburnt but he certainly wasn’t alright. Thankfully, darkness covered the land, his body should return to normal soon enough.
He didn’t feel any different, just tired which is expected as he has not gotten any sleep in two full days. His head was about to split open at this point.
"We are lucky this cave was not habited, considering how we barely missed the sun rising by seconds," Danag said.
"If we had encountered even a single Paler, I can only imagine how the situation would have turned out," Erick chipped in.
Jael did not want to think about what his guards were saying but they were right. If they had to fight it would have been a little too much.
Aside from the fact that they were exhausted from running throughout the night for over two nights now, there was the fact of not getting adequate rest and comfortable sleeping areas.
At first, it had been easy to pretend that his urgency was to deal with the situation with Evan as soon as possible but that was already dealt with and they could have taken their time.
However, that was completely out of the question for him. He wanted to get home as soon as possible and the thought of having to spend another day without her presence left a bad taste in his mouth.
The castle was crawling with vampires, anything could go wrong. Not that he didn’t trust his household to keep her safe but he would rather be there in person.
Was this the only reason he was in such a hurry? Her safety was important and being away without any form of information was troubling.
There was also the issue that occurred before he left but that didn’t slow his feet. Instead, he was curious about her reaction to when he returned.
"Well that didn’t happen, let’s head home." He said.
"We don’t have to be in such a hurry," Erick whined.
"No, Erick. It is best we leave the Nolands as soon as possible. If they are waking up it would be unsafe for us and the last thing I want to do right now is face a hungry paler." Damon said.
"Even if we hurry, I am in no state to outrun a paler and I am sure, we are all in the same state. We would have to engage in combat when we run into one and it’s better to do that with some energy reserve."
"When?" Danag asked with a frown.
"Yes, it’s the Nolands, this place is crawling with Palers. Why would they leave us alone?" Erick asked.
"Your noise is enough to attract them. We shouldn’t worry about possibilities, let’s head home. You already followed me this far and we are already so close to the castle, I am sure we can make it in one piece."
Silence followed Jael’s words and Erick stared at him with his mouth hanging open.
"What is the meaning of your reaction, Erick?" Jael asked with a glare.
The vampire shook his head, snapping him out of his trance. "I apologize, I just didn’t expect encouraging words."
"Think before you talk, you idiot." Damon scolded.
Jael squinted his eyes but he didn’t have any energy to respond to Erick’s words. His only concern was to get home as soon as possible.
They were still standing in front of the cave, looking forward, there was nothing but tiny stones which meant if any Palers were out, they would be spotted immediately.
He hated the Nolands, it was nothing but barren lands. Coupled with the fact that the sun here was from another dimension even though the sun had set he could still feel the heat emanating from the cracked ground.
It was a little curious that there were two prospering lands on either side of the Nolands but somehow here didn’t share this. Not a tree was in sight.
"We should leave now. If we want to make it to the castle without running into any Palers." Jael said and got into his stance as he prepared to take off.
"You don’t have to tell me twice," Erick replied.
They weren’t safe in the open grounds, they had to get to the trees as soon as possible. At least that would provide them with some coverage.
Jael took off running, setting the pace for them to keep up with. They seemed to have a hard time but he never lost sight of them.
He couldn’t help but feel bad for pushing them so hard. These were vampires that would follow him to the ends of the earth but at the same time, he couldn’t help but think of this as good training.
If he was about to wage war against Palers, he needed to make sure his personal guards could handle it. He was sure they could and with Kieran’s help, he was hoping that the fear of Palers was soon to be a thing of the past.
Jael sensed a presence, disrupting his thoughts. A Paler. He could tell immediately and as if to confirm his thoughts, the smell reached his nose.
"Sire," he heard a voice and saw that Damon was running right next to him. "We have company."
"I know," he forced out, it was hard to talk with the amount of wind blowing in his face.
"What do we do?"
"We keep running, if it catches up we engage." He replied.
Damon nodded and fell back and Jael knew he wanted to give the information to the rest of them.
He didn’t want to fight the paler yet, they were almost at the trees, if he could drag it till they got there, they would likely have more of an advantage but that was if they didn’t get ambushed.
He picked up the pace slightly, Jael could feel pain in his legs, he was exhausted, hungry, and tired. Even though he was supposedly the strongest of vampires, this was still pushing himself.
He heard the sounds of feet hitting the ground. His guards were quiet runners, it was the Paler and from the sound it was hot on their chase.
Jael frowned, he didn’t like how fast the creature was closing the gap between them and at this point, they might have to engage before they reached the trees and he wanted to avoid that.
Suddenly, he noticed Danag slowing down. Jael frowned, what was the vampire doing? They would be spotted, he didn’t want to draw attention to themselves in this open space.
He heard it, the sound of a weapon smashed into the creature, it was followed by a loud sound as the creature screamed.
Jael swore and stopped running. Turning around, he rushed in the direction of the sound to see Danag standing in front of the creature. Erick was beside and the two were stained with blood.
Erick was heaving while Danag looked unbothered. The creature was lying on the ground with its guts open and its eyes partly closed, it didn’t look like it could move.
Damon arrived within seconds of Jael appearing. "What part of do not engage did you not understand?"
"I wanted to test this out," he said and lifted a tiny bag. "We still don’t know how to administer it and Kieran is too busy to answer questions."
Jael recognized the contents immediately as the smell reached him. "I see, and?"
"Dealing some damage makes it work faster." He swung his axe, easily wiping off the blood of the Paler.
"It is a smaller paler so it was easy to deal with," Erick smirked.
"I guess it even slows down the regeneration process," Damon commented.
"I coated my weapon with it, It doesn’t dry up easily but most importantly this also works," Danag said and poured a huge amount directly into the creature’s open gut.
It groaned slightly and instantly went quiet. Jael could tell that it was asleep.
"The only problem is, I don’t know yet what amount is enough and when to stop."
"I understand your enthusiasm, Danag," Jael said but now is not the time for research.
"I apologize, Sire. I caught sight of the creature and my body moved on its own."
"I am glad this ended easily but that scream has given away our location and we need to move. Whatever you want to say can be said when we get to our destination."
"Yes, Sire," Danag said with a bow.
Jael wasn’t angry, he was impressed, he had gotten to the creature barely thirty seconds after he heard its cry but Danag and Erick had already dealt with it before he arrived.
This was great news for them, the issue would be to find out if it would stay asleep all night. As much as he wanted to find out, now was not the time.
