Chapter 298: 298. Never Do That Again

Mauve felt sad at the look on Jael’s face. He looked very angry at her. She closed her eyes, she shouldn’t have let her anger take over her like that.

However, when he said the words that he didn’t need her help, she was furious. Next thing she knew, her hands were moving on their own accord. That was her fault.

She wanted to fix the situation but she couldn’t help but feel like she made it worse. Still, she would have never guessed he would react in that manner. This led to the question of just how long has he been starving himself.

Mauve opened her eyes to see Jael’s face hovering over her, her thoughts were getting groggy and her limbs felt like they didn’t belong to her.

"How do you feel?" He asked.

Mauve blinked, realizing that he had lifted her off the ground and she was now across his arms. "Tired," she replied and turned her gaze away from him.

He took a step forward, leading her to the bed. He got to the bed and gently placed her on it. Mauve immediately rolled on her side, turning her back to him.

She was actually angry, if he wasn’t so hungry he wouldn’t have reacted that way. Why was he angry at her for trying to help?

"Mauve," Jael called softly, touching the back of her hair.

"Y-yes," she replied, the words slurring on her tongue. She didn’t need anyone to tell her she won’t be awake for long.

"Look at me," he commanded.

Mauve groaned but gave in to the order and rolled onto her back. She was too tired to deal with anything right now, not even her thoughts.

"Never to do that again," he said.

Mauve frowned and turned her gaze away from him while nodding her head. He did not need to repeat those words, she definitely knew not to do that again.

"Promise me," he said adamantly.

"I promise," she said but kept her gaze away.

Jael sighed loudly, he sounded lost for words but she didn’t care. She was just trying to help and having it backfire on her didn’t feel good.

"If you’d just..." she started to say but went quiet.

"If I had just?" Jael asked, urging her to continue.

"Maybe if you had just fed like you normally would, I wouldn’t have had to do that." She mumbled with a sad tone to her voice still turned away from him.

"What are you talking about?" He asked.

Mauve jerked her head in his direction, causing Jael to pull his hand away from her hair. "Don’t think I haven’t noticed. You haven’t been drinking properly from me, you merely take the equivalent of a sip like you don’t like the taste of my blood or something."

"That’s not..." Jael started to say but stopped midway and just ran his hands through his hair. He sighed again. "It is not what you think," he tried to explain.

Mauve tried to nod but her head felt heavy, she was drowsy. "Then what is it?" The words were slurred and it sounded a bit muffled.

"I..."

The sound of knocking drew both their attention to the door. "Sire," a voice rang out. "The first meal is ready."

Jael turned his attention to Mauve, "We will discuss this when I get back."

Mauve squinted her eyes but she didn’t even have the energy to argue and neither did she didn’t like the idea of putting this off.

"Get some rest, I have to go." he adjusted the sheets over her body. "Mill will get you everything you need."

Mauve couldn’t even nod in response, she just closed her eyes and she felt her body succumb to the drowsiness. She was going to fall asleep faster than she had thought.

She felt his cold lips on her forehead before he pulled away and heard the sound of the door opening and closing. Mauve’s forehead furrowed, this was definitely not a proper goodbye.

*************************

Jael opened the door with a curse on his lips. The unfortunate servant standing at the entrance jumped in fright before quickly bowing her head.

Jael frowned as he laid eyes on her. He was in a crappy mood without a doubt. "Tell Mill to attend to Mauve," he ordered and without waiting for a response, he went past her and headed for the stairs.

They probably had less than thirty minutes for the sun to set. That was enough time to get ready, however, now he wasn’t so sure about leaving.

Mauve had looked disappointed, sad, and angry. It was a lot of emotions and he wasn’t quite sure had to deal with them. There was also the fact that he had snapped at her even though it was all his fault. If he had not starved himself so much, he wouldn’t have reacted in such a manner.

Why would she even think that the taste of her blood was the problem when his fangs still tingle at the thought of drinking from her?

Jael did not realize how far he had gone being so lost in thought until the guards threw the door to the dining hall open. He walked in and his three personal guards stood to their feet.

"Sire," they started to say but Jael waved his hand dismissively and the rest of their words dried out.

"Is something wrong, Sire?" Danag asked as they took their seats.

"No, eat up." He wasn’t in the mood to have any conversation about it.

"As you wish," Danag said and bowed his head. "I did all that you asked, Sire and I informed Haney of our departure."

"What reason did you give him?"

"Nothing specific and since he didn’t press me for details I didn’t bother giving out too much information."

"I guess that’s good," Jael said absentmindedly.

"He also agreed to take care of the incoming recruits so we don’t have to worry about dealing with them in our absence," Danag explained further.

Jael nodded but it was pretty obvious he wasn’t listening, he had his thoughts on other things.
