The Vampire King's Possession
Chapter 277. Vying

Chapter 277: 277. Vying

Jael stood to his feet at the end of the meeting. His sudden movement caused the chair to tumble backward but Damon caught it in time and moved it out of the way to give him enough room.

"I hope you understand your role in this and I expect your support for the future of the vampires and our fight against the Palers, a war that has gone on for far too long. This time I will do my very best to make sure we rise on top." Jael’s eyes scanned the table as spoke.

Most of the Lords had scowls on their faces but they had been most agreeable after his outburst and he had been able to get the message across appropriately.

Unfortunately, it also ruined their enthusiasm and not all of them were willing to offer a significant amount of guards to join the special unit.

This was annoying as he would have to rely on most of the guards at the castle. Lord Garth and Lord Levaton were quite generous.

He wasn’t exactly out of options. He could reach out to the other Lords that weren’t in attendance and inform them of the situation. Unfortunately, it was a hassle and he wasn’t exactly thrilled by the idea of writing another round of letters.

"The sedative shall be distributed as soon as we have more. However, you can all leave with a sample. Lord Kieran would get it to you accordingly. You can use it however you see fit." He said and slowly backed away from them.

The Lords stood to their feet and bowed to his back. Jael didn’t once turn back as he walked out. He frowned slightly, he could hear the movements of two vampires as they followed him out.

"This way, please Sire." Lord Garth’s voice rang out as the doors closed. "We need to talk."

Jael slowly turned around, "I will have to ask that you put that on hold, Lord Garth. If I am to make it to the castle before sunlight, I need to leave now."

"It would only be for a few minutes, Primus." Lord Levaton said coldly.

Jael’s frown immediately fell, "If you insist, Lord Levaton but it can’t be more than twenty minutes. Any more and I am afraid I would have to leave you two to your devices."

"Twenty minutes is more than enough, Sire. Please come this way." Lord Garth replied

Jael smiled stiffly, he saw this coming and he truly wanted to avoid it but that was not to be. He has seen their reaction after his outburst he had known immediately that they would want to have a word with him after the meeting was over.

"Have a seat please, Sire." Lord Garth said as they got into the room.

His personal guards were behind the door. They had accompanied him but didn’t go into the room with him. Jael turned his head around ad he stood. He didn’t recognize this room.

"I’d rather not. Do tell me what this is about and make it quick."

Lord Garth looked like he was about to protest but Lord Levaton cleared his throat. He adjusted on his seat and opened his mouth to speak.

"Sire, I understand dealing with the Lords must be quite frustrating but as the Primus you do need to understand where they are coming from and you shouldn’t have spoken to them in such a manner."

Jael frowned slightly and looked from Lord Garth to Lord Levaton. Lord Garth slowly nodded his head to his counterpart’s words.

"Is that so?" Jael asked coldly.

"Yes, Sire." They said in unison.

"If they are offended by the few words I uttered then they were never truly on my side to begin with and are simply looking for an excuse to come at me. Besides, you were both at the meeting why are you addressing me directly, you seem more concerned about the other Lord even though as spoke to you all in a group. Why aren’t you taking it personally?"

The Lords’ looked at each other and then back at Jael but neither of them said anything.

"That’s what I thought. I don’t feel remorse if that’s what you want to know and if the situation arises again, I would most likely repeat it. Besides, it is better to deal with it head-on than to let it fester." Jael paused slightly before he continued.

"I didn’t attend a lot of meetings but I don’t recall my father being antagonized by the Lords this much. If they have a problem with me, they should come out and say it instead of poking at everything I do." Jael announced with a mean look on his face.

"You’ve heard then, haven’t you?"

Jael smirked, "I expected you to play dumb. You usually like to assure me that everything is alright."

"Heard?" Lord Garth said looking from one of them to the other. "I haven’t heard anything."

"There have been speculations that some of the Lords are vying but of course, it is mere speculations and the Lords wouldn’t do that."

Lord Garth looked shocked, "This is the first time I have gotten wind of this."

"As the Primus has said, it is mere speculations. However, all that can be blown away if you’d just pick a mate and assure them that you’re on their side."

Jael blinked, "They want to start an opposition and you think something as simple as picking a mate would solve this."

"It would, Sire."

"You sound so sure, Lord Levaton."

"It would prove your sincerity to the cause. It can’t be that you haven’t found any females that are to your liking, there are more than enough, Sire."

"Then next they would demand that I cancel the treaty with the humans. Who is to say they would stop there? Who is to say that something as simple as getting a mate is truly the issue here?" Jael chuckled.

"Sire..." Lord Levaton started to say but Jael interrupted.

"I am not giving in to anyone whether or not it pleases them. If they want to rule so badly, they should have taken the throne while I had my back turned and wanted no part in this. I don’t care what their demands are. What’s the point of being the Primus if I only listen to what they say and do things as it pleases them? You’d think dealing with the Palers would be more important." Jael scoffed.

He retreated a little, "This conversation is over. I am grateful for all your help and support but I don’t think giving in to them is how to run this. Lord Garth, your hosting was impeccable and I apologize that I cannot stay for the day, please give my regards to Lady Arora."

Lord Garth rose to his feet immediately, "No, please don’t apologize, Sire and a Lord like me isn’t worthy of such praise."

Jael turned around, "I shall take my leave now. Thank you for your hospitality."

"Sire," Lord Levaton called softly. "Please be careful."

Jael slowly turned his head, "That almost sounds like you know something, Lord Levaton."

"I wish I did."

"Well then if all we have are speculations, I doubt they have what it takes to take me head-on," Jael smirked. "In fact, I am looking forward to that. Have a good day’s rest, Lords."

"I will see you to the door, Sire." Lord Garth rang out.

Jael nodded and walked to the door with was immediately thrown open. Only Danag and Damon stood by the doors.

"Where is Erick?" He asked immediately.

"He is outside," Danag responded.

"What? Why?" Jael asked as he walked past them without slowing down.

"He didn’t want to risk running into his family," Danag explained.

"I see," Jael replied and picked up the pace. Somehow, he could tell a Lord was likely to stop him. Thankfully, he got to the door without incident.

"Thank you for coming all the way here, Sire. My mate would have liked to say her goodbyes." Lord Garth said at the door entrance.

"There is no need for that Lord Garth, I don’t want to put her through such unnecessary stress."

"Alright, Sire. One more thing, Sire. The workers would be at the castle in about two nights and they would start immediately. I would have said tomorrow night but it will take a while for the supplies to get to the castle. It would surely prevent the start of the work."

Jael smiled at him, "I understand, Lord Garth. I shall be on my way then."

"Sire," Lord Garth called softly.

The doors were already thrown open and were held open by the guards. Jael tried not to let his impatience show as he turned around to look at Lord Garth.

"Yes," he responded through closed teeth. What was this unnecessary delay?

"I am always on your side, Sire."

Jael nodded, "I know. Not once have I doubted you."

Lord Garth looked like he wanted to say more but at this point, Jael had enough and he rushed out the open doors.
