Chapter 256. Not Remarkable

Chapter 256: 256. Not Remarkable

Mauve groaned as she was gently lifted off the bed but she still didn’t wake up as Jael carried her in his arms and walked across the room to where the tub lay.

He carefully lowered her into it and as soon as her body touched the warm water, her eyes flew open and she panicked, kicking her legs about.

"Don’t panic, it’s just warm water." He whispered

Her legs stopped and the look of confusion cleared from her face. "Why didn’t you wake me?" She mumbled. "That was terrifying, I thought I was drowning." She gasped, grabbing the sides of the bath as she fell deeper into the tub.

"I did," Jael said and slowly let go of her. "However, no matter what I did you didn’t wake up. I figured I’d bathe you while you were still sleeping, I didn’t expect you to react like that."

He brushed the hair from her face as he stared at her with a concerned expression.

"Well, you can’t blame me," Mauve said and looked away. "One minute, I was dreaming then I started to fall and I seemed to have fallen into water."

Jael moved his hand from her face. "What were you dreaming about?" He asked softly.

"Nothing special. I was just running through a field of wildflowers. I don’t even know how I got there." She smiled and looked up at him.

"I see," Jael said but did not attempt to join in. "I will wash you off so that you can go back to sleep." He suddenly added.

Mauve frowned slightly. "Aren’t you going to join in?" She asked.

He stood beside the bath bent over her, naked as the day he came to this world. Mauve made sure to keep her gaze slightly lifted.

The side of Jael’s lips slightly lifted, "Do you want me to join you?"

Mauve looked away, "You’re right. I should hurry up and go back to sleep."

"Too late," Jael announced and put a foot into the bath.

Mauve glared at him. but she adjusted so there was room enough for him. As soon as he got in, she leaned backward, resting her head against his back.

The water was warm against her and his back felt warmer than usual. She wondered if it was because of the water.

He wrapped his hands around her, hugging her tightly against him. "Are you hurting anywhere?"

Mauve shook her head and almost immediately a yawn escaped her lips.

"Still sleepy?"

"Yeah," she traced a line across the arm that was wrapped around her.

Jael leaned forward and bit her ear. She jerked, "Ow."

"That should wake you up."

"I don’t want to wake up," she groaned, yawning again as she buried herself some more in his arms.

"Let’s get you out of the water then," Jael said.

Mauve nodded and closed her eyes. She felt Jael’s hands run all over her body as helped her wash up. Soon enough he help her out of the water and tried to help her dry off.

"Ugh," she groaned as she wrapped a towel around her hair. "I forgot to tie it up. Now, it’s wet."

It wasn’t too wet and if she rubbed hard enough, it could dry off before she went to bed but she was too sleepy to do that.

Do you need my help?" Jael asked as he watched her lament.

He was towering over her as he stood beside her. His hair was still wet and it dripped down the side of his face but the rest of his body was dried up.

Mauve felt her gaze stray down from his face to the rest of his body but managed to stop staring when she got to his chest. It was annoying that he was good to look at.

Mauve shook her head, trying hard not to ask surprise at his question. She wrapped the towel around her head and tried to find a way to make it hold.

She was trying not to read too much into his gestures but he seemed gentler than normal. She shook her head, she was seeing things. He was usually nice to her, this was nothing new.

Satisfied with her work, she approached the bed and threw herself on it, she was too tired to care about sleeping naked, all she wanted to do now was fall asleep.

She placed her head on the pillow, it felt heavy because of the towel. She heard Jael get in beside her and pull her close to himself not too close, just enough for his arms to rest on her and their legs entangled.

His body was cool again, it had completely forgotten he just had a warm bath. Hers still felt warm. Well compared to him, anyone would feel warm.

She closed her eyes and tried to sleep. She didn’t know what the next day held but she would definitely try to pick up knitting again, maybe this time she would get it right.

It didn’t take long for Mauve to realize, she wasn’t going to fall asleep earlier. She opened her eyes and then closed it. After a few minutes, she turned on her back and looked at the ceiling. She turned to Jael and saw him looking at her with bright eyes.

"Can’t sleep?" He asked, his arm was resting on her stomach while the other one was under his hair which was still wet but was no longer dripping.

She shook her head, "I can’t seem to."

She looked back to the ceiling, it was pretty high up and there were patterns on it but it was too dark for her to say what they were.

"Maybe, you should take the towel off?" He offered.

"It will wet the pillow." She replied.

"I am sure, it can be that bad."

"It’s not why I can’t sleep, it’s pretty comfortable."

"Okay," he mumbled.

"Can I ask a question?" She suddenly said, pouting suspiciously.

Jael frowned slightly. "Go on," he responded. "Ask."

"Why did you make Damon the new Head guard? Does it have something to with the letter?"

She was particularly curious but it was a little weird to just lay down in silence and he didn’t know what kind of questions to ask him. He was always stuck up whenever she asked personal questions.

"Do you think I did so unfairly?" He asked with a raised brow.

"No," Mauve said lying through her nose. She could remember Erick’s reaction, nothing had seemed right about it. "I am sure you have your reasons."

"And you want to know them?" He asked.

"You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to," she pouted.

Jael chuckled and pinched her nose.

"Ow," she said and grabbed her nose, rubbing it a little.

"It’s not something you should concern yourself about but I’ll ask you a question and then you’ll answer one of mine."

Mauve nodded, "Of course."

"You overheard the conversation with Kieran about coming up with a way to combat the palers."

Mauve could feel Jael’s intense gaze on her as he mentioned palers. He didn’t have to worry. The memory didn’t bother her as badly, more like she hoped it didn’t.

Her lips made a thin line as she nodded, she didn’t want to admit she had listened to them while they were conversing but there was no way she didn’t hear the conversation. She was literally in the room with them.

"Well," Jael continued. "Not only that but we will also make a small team of vampires that would be trained to specifically battle Palers and Danag is in charge of that. He wouldn’t have time for anything else. This is to make it easier for him."

"Oh, I see. When do you plan to do this?" She asked.

"Soon enough," he responded.

"Okay," she nodded.

"Does that answer your question?" He asked.

"Yes," she said with a soft smile and glanced at him briefly before looking away.

"What was your childhood like?"

Mauve sat up suddenly, her eyes nearly popping out of their sockets. The towel loosened as she turned her head to look at Jael. "What?" She asked loudly.

Jael’s brows dipped very low, he didn’t even bother hiding his displeasure at her reaction. "I said, what was your childhood like?"

"I know what you said," she replied and laid back on the bed, haphazardly wrapping the towel. "Sorry, you’ve just never asked about my past before." She replied fiddling with the towel, a little longer than necessary.

"I am sure, I have. Jael replied stubbornly.

"You haven’t." Realizing the sheets had flown off at her dramatic reaction, she quickly pulled them upward to cover her chest.

"Anyway to answer your question, not remarkable." She said as she gripped the sheets.

"I was lonely all the time, the queen..." she paused, looked away, and cleared her throat. "My mother was busy all the time and I didn’t have a lot of friends so I was mostly by myself."
