The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 250. New Head Guard
Chapter 250: 250. New Head Guard
"Come closer," Jael ordered.
Damon moved immediately and was in front of the King in no time. He stood in front of the desk and stared Jael in the eye.
Jael smirked as he stared at Damon, his parents had chosen him and at first, he had found it bothersome as Damon hardly spoke unless when spoken to, he couldn’t keep a conversation going and understood orders best but as time went on, he found that to be a good thing.
However, there were a lot of times when Damon acted completely out of character and those times usually involved Erick. Jael couldn’t blame him, Erick tended to bring out the worst in people.
"You are the new Head Guard," Jael said, closely watching Damon’s face, so he didn’t miss the look of surprise. However, it was gone as soon as it appeared.
"Okay."
"This is the part where you thank me for giving you the opportunity, Damon," Jael said sarcastically.
"Yes, Sire."
Jael squinted his eyes, "Speak. I can tell you want to say something."
"I think Erick would do a better job," Damon said without hesitancy.
"I am sure he thinks so too," Jael said but even he knows it would be a mistake to make Erick a Head Guard. He was already a nuisance, he didn’t want a bigger nuisance on his hand.
"Would you prefer I gave it to him?" Jael asked when Damon didn’t say anything.
"He would do a better job than I would."
This wasn’t untrue but Jael didn’t say this out loud. Right now, he wanted someone who would take orders without question. Erick was completely out of the question.
"That’s for me to decide," Jael said. "Anything else you want to add?"
Damon shook his head, "No."
"Are you sure? Not even why?"
Danag shrugged, "I can take a guess and that’s enough for me."
Jael smiled to himself, this was exactly what he needed for now. "Well, then congratulations, new Head Guard. Your duties start now. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask Danag and even though you don’t have any questions, go to Danag. I will make a proper announcement before or after the last meal on the chance that anyone might not believe it."
Damon bowed, "Okay, Sire." He replied.
"You’re dismissed."
Damon bowed again before making his way to the door. Jael watched the door close before he looked away from it.
He groaned as he looked up at the ceiling. Tonight was more stressful than he had expected it to be and he had another meeting with Lord Garth tomorrow night.
He looked at the table and his eyes caught the letter, it was still open on his desk. He would have to dispose of it properly. Mauve mustn’t get wind of it.
Somehow, he didn’t want her to know he went snooping behind her back. Not that she would have told him otherwise.
He was hoping that she would be able to confide in him at some point, that would mean that she trusted him but if she already knew, it would change everything.
He picked up the dying candle and held it to the side away from the desk and the rest of the papers on it. Holding the paper over the fire, he watched it start to burn.
He placed the candle back on the table and just stared at the paper as it burned. It burned slower than he expected but somehow the fire didn’t go out.
It burnt until it got to the little piece between his fingers and then the fire went off. Jael dropped the piece onto his palm and blew it, it landed on the ground.
He stood to his feet and that was when he noticed some of the dust had fallen on his black pants. He tried to wipe it but it only stained some more.
He swore and stomped out of the study. He got to his room and changed into a new pair of pants. He placed the pants where the servants would find them and quickly made his way to the connecting door.
Without so much as a knock or a warning, he pushed the door open and was greeted by a yelp from Mauve was still in the bathtub as Mill helped her clean up.
He has done this too often for her to be startled each time but he would be lying if he said he didn’t enjoy her reaction. Jael smirked to himself and closed the door behind him as he walked into the room.
Mill immediately stood to her feet and bowed to him. "Sire," she called out. Her voice also held surprise.
"Carry on, Mill. Don’t stop. We don’t want her to catch a cold." He smirked at her.
"I am not going to catch a cold that easily," she blurted out, glaring at him.
"We’ll see," he replied, staring hard at her.
Her hair was tied up and wrapped as if to avoid it getting wet or to dry it up, Jael wasn’t sure. His gaze settled on her face and she looked away from him.
He didn’t stop there, he trailed the rest of her body but unfortunately, most of his view was covered by the water. Still, it didn’t hide how fragile she looked.
To think that a body this small had gone through this much twisted his stomach a little. He looked at her arm and the three scars stared back at him.
They were darker compared to the rest of her skin so they stood out to some extent. The fact that this was his fault is something that would continually haunt him.
He would make sure nothing would ever harm her again. Not his watch and he would rip at anyone who tried to.
He returned his gaze to her face and she was as red as beetroot. Jael smirked to himself. He liked how shy she was, no matter how many times he stared at her, she still reacted the same way. He thought that was adorable.
