The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 218. Danag
Chapter 218: 218. Danag
"Sire," Danag said as gently as he could. He could tell he was stepping on thin ice. "I don’t think provocation is the way to go about this."
Jael’s face darkened and he glared at Danag, his anger unhidden. "Would you rather I sit back and take their insolence?"
"It is a frightening time for all of us. At this period comforting and reassuring the Lords is the right way to go about this." Danag said, keeping his tone neutral.
"I do not have time to babysit a bunch of old Vampires. I have done more for them these past months than they have done in centuries." Jael sneered.
"You were away for ten years, Sire, I know we are vampires but that is enough time for a little seed of doubt to germinate into a full-blown tree. They don’t trust you." Danag sighed, his exasperation was leaking out.
"I didn’t want to be King, anyone else could have taken my place but they didn’t. What do you mean they don’t trust me? They chose me."
"They have their fears and worries and it’s not completely misplaced. It was a tough time for all of us, the sudden death of your parents is not something we can ever get over. Not for us and not for you either. You were not ready for the throne but do not make harsh decisions. They are ungrateful, they are your subordinates, it is bound to happen."
Danag expected this but the Lords wouldn’t have reacted like this if Jael had played his role properly. The princess was giving him more reason to avoid his duties.
Anyone with an eye can clearly see he favors her and that was more than enough reason to cause agitation with the Lords considering most of them didn’t agree with the peace treaty in the first place.
No vampire wanted to be second place to a human even if it was for a short while. The King could do whatever he wanted but even with proper results this would still be an issue and the fact that he was pretending not to see this was starting to gnaw at Danag.
There was only so much a guard could do, even a head guard for that matter. It was times like this he wished Lord Louis was here. He was the only one who could speak some sense into the King aside from his parents.
The King could solve this distrust issue if he would just pick a mate but he was never the type to do what he was supposed to, he only did what he wanted. It took him almost ten years to agree to be King even though he was the only heir to the throne.
"Please, Sire, be a little understanding. The Palers rampancy is getting to everyone and we are all at the edge of our seats, especially after you got attacked yourself. No one wants a repeat of ten years ago."
"If they don’t want a repeat, they should understand that they are not the only ones with fears. I have to battle with the actual palers than cater to their fears."
"Palers are not the only thing they are worried about."
Jael’s gaze darkened, "What are you trying to say Danag?"
Danag cleared his throat and adjusted in his seat, "Nothing you haven’t heard."
He knew better than to push the King’s button anymore especially since he was in such a foul mood. Somehow Danag knew it had more to do with the princess than the letters.
He was glad she wanted to fix the fence, the King might actually consider doing this because of her. However, the effect she had on him wasn’t something that could be completely ignored.
It wasn’t an issue yet but Danag knew it was better to nip this in the bud than let it get out of hand. He was banking on the fact that the King would get over his infatuation soon but that did not seem to be the case.
He had no issue with the princess herself but she was a human. To vampires, even a human princess was less than a lower vampire.
It was the same reason Lord Seraphino had been able to attack her without fear. He had known that whatever he got, it would not be death. So for them to see him treat her in this manner, was sure to raise a lot of eyebrows.
Word was already going around about how long he had been at the Xanthus Estate and why. They could not afford to give the Lords more reason to doubt the King.
Danag froze as the room dropped a couple of temperatures. He might have bitten a bit more than he could chew.
"Is this the information you have been feeding, Erick?" Jael asked, his tone holding no emotion.
"I haven’t said anything without basis," Danag said as all the hair on the back of his head stood. He wanted to keep this away from the King, but that vampire and his big mouth.
"You think an opposition will arise?" Jael sneered and Danag caught sight of his canines.
"Speculations, Sire," Danag said. The King was already pissed, adding gasoline to this fire wouldn’t help anybody.
"But you said you haven’t said anything without basis," Jael arched his head to the side and smirked.
"Yes, Sire," Danag said with his head bowed.
He was certain there were forces rising to thwart the King’s regime but at the same time, it might just be rumors to throw him off.
"Let them come," Jael’s eyes glowed in the dark.
"Your Grace, no matter how much proof I have. You are still King and the Lords have accepted that. For the same reason the throne was vacant for the ten years, you mourned your parents. No one will be stupid enough to go against you."
Jael’s shoulders fell and his glowing eyes dimmed. "How pathetic. Danag, I would appreciate it if you kept your worried thoughts to yourself. I have you nagging at me already to see Erick do the same is infuriating."
"I apologize, sire, for my forwardness, it won’t repeat itself." Danag stood to his feet and bowed his head.
"Hmm," Jael replied.
Danag stood to his full height, he wasn’t sure if this was over but for some reason, he could tell it was not. The king was obviously determined about setting up a meeting.
He was afraid if he tried to dissuade him, it might only piss him off more and this might turn the meeting upside down. They can’t afford any infighting at this time.
"Anything else I need to know?" Jael asked, the irritation was back in his eyes.
"No," Danag said.
"Not even speculations," Jael asked sarcastically.
"No, Your Grace."
"You have been getting lots of passes Danag. First, you take backhanded actions to get me back here, secondly, you spread speculations and now you return here without my permission."
"I apologize, sire. I didn’t mean to go against your orders."
"Ugh... Your apology grates at my ears, you nosy guard. We both know you’ll do this again. Just because I know your actions are from the right place does not make it less irritating. Cease your sly actions at once, it’s unbecoming."
"I apologize, Sire," Danag said, he could not hide his smirk in time.
"Get out and now that you’re here there is no need to return to Xanthus estate if Kieran will be here in only a few days. However, while you’re here, make sure to make yourself useful. Depending on the incidents in the coming weeks, we might have a new squad. Since you have so much time on your hands, it’s only right that I put you in charge."
Danag froze, "You want me in charge of that?"
"Did I stutter Danag?"
"No, you didn’t."
"As the head, it means all the responsibility falls on your shoulders and that includes choosing who will be a part of it."
"I understand, Sire," Danag said with an even lower bow. "It is an honor."
"No, it’s not. It is a nasty job that will mostly include you training newbies. Have fun," Jael said with an evil smirk.
Danag nodded and slowly made his way to the door. The King wasn’t completely lying. Yes, they might get a few strong vampires but no Lord is going to let go of their strongest guards.
They would want to make sure their estates and castle have some protection just in case the King’s plans fall to dust so yes most of the members would be vampires with very little experience with palers.
Still, he was looking forward to this. He was never the kind to shy from a challenge. He was sure this was the King’s way of punishing him by putting more work on his plates in hopes that it would keep him occupied.
There was still some time before the squad would begin, he will make sure to put out the right cards in time. For his King.
