Chapter 209. Just Bloody Letters
Chapter 209: 209. Just Bloody Letters
"It will be better for me," she blurted out, closing her eyes tightly as she waited for his response.
Jael stiffened and his expression hardened. "Are you worried about palers?"
Mauve’s eyes flew open and she shook her head. "No, I am not. Besides, I don’t think the fence would keep palers out."
She could barely recall him telling her that but she wasn’t sure. Aside from that, she had seen a paler up close twice now. She knew a fence wouldn’t keep one out.
The claws wouldn’t easily climb the walls and if they were serious they wouldn’t need to scale the fence; they could just bulldoze it down.
A brief memory of the force that hit her moving carriage sent shivers down her body. Her wounds would be a permanent indication of what Palers could do.
"You are right, it won’t." He said, his tone a little icy.
Mauve swallowed at the uncomfortable silence. She couldn’t tell if he was on board with the idea or if he hated the suggestion. It didn’t help that his expression showed annoyance.
"It doesn’t have to be right now but I couldn’t help but notice the fences Lord Levaton and Lord Xanthus..." Mauve noticed Jael freeze a little as she mentioned Kieran’s estate, her voice shook as her courage wavered a little.
She cleared her throat and resumed her sentence, "...were in proper shape. It made me wonder if anything could be done about the current state of the fence and the surrounding area but we have to fix the fence first before we can even consider that. I know it’s a lot of work, I didn’t really put much thought into the idea..."
"Mauve," he called sternly, touching her shoulders.
"Are you angry?" She asked she knew she was rambling but she didn’t know how else to handle the intense situation.
It was annoying that she couldn’t completely get a read on him and even though he could be playful sometimes. His mood switch was worse than that of a child.
"Huh? Why would I be angry?" He pulled back slightly, staring hard at her face.
"Because I said something insensitive."
Technically, it was rude to tell someone their house was in a terrible state and needed fixing but if she was going to stay here, she might as well try to make it conducive for her.
"Ha, what gave you that idea?"
Mauve’s face fell, "Because you seem angry."
Jael sighed, "I am not angry. I just realized just how terrible the state of the fences and the area surrounding the castle is so much so that it troubles you."
"Well, mine is purely selfish. I am not trying to get you to improve it because it’s better for the castle. I just want to run around the fields in the daylight without worry." She pouted.
Jael shuffled her hair. "I will think about it."
"It’s not a yes?" She phrased it like a question but she was almost certain, he didn’t say yes to what she suggested.
"I know it’s bad but I’ve never really thought about it and as I said it doesn’t affect anything. We can move about without any hindrance. However, now that you have brought it to my attention. I will think about it."
Mauve glared at him, just how negligent was he? It was literally outside the castle, there was no way to leave without seeing it.
However, she had to admit that compared to humans vampires never really left their homes and the distance between houses was ridiculous. If they didn’t move so fast, it would feel like embarking on a journey just to get to the next house.
She nodded softly. It was good enough for her but it was better than him saying a straight-up no.
She couldn’t comprehend why he wouldn’t want to fix the fences but she wasn’t about to jump to a conclusion. If he would think about it, that’s enough for now.
He squinted his eyes at her. "It doesn’t seem as though that’s enough for you but stop worrying about it and get some sleep."
She nodded and closed her eyes. She still had a while, she was certain, she could convince him at some point.
...
Mauve opened her eyes to Jael getting out of bed. "You are awake," he said. "I didn’t want to wake you."
"It’s fine," she grumbled. She would have woken up even if he didn’t get out of bed.
"You can sleep some more if you’d like. I will ask the servants to deliver your meal to the room."
"I don’t need to sleep more. I slept early enough last night." She said and sat upright, wiping her face.
Besides, she had slept like a dead body, not once had she woken up which was unlike her. She would often wake up at least once or twice, usually briefly.
"If you insist. I still have a lot to do, so I will be in the study all night. If you do need anything, don’t hesitate to ask me or anyone else."
"Is something wrong?" She asked with concern on her face.
He was in the study for the majority of the night before. He only came down during mealtimes and he was gone as soon as the meal was over.
She could also remember the state he had returned in last night. It was worrisome. To think that whatever the reason was, it wasn’t over yet. It was only right for her to be concerned.
"No," he said sternly. "Just bloody letters." His voice sounded even darker.
"Letters?" She asked with a frown.
"Don’t worry about it," he turned to look at her.
"You never tell me anything." She pouted and looked away from him.
"It’s vampire business, it is not worth concerning yourself about it." He said and turned away from her.
She kept her lips a thin line and she looked away from him.
"Mill should be in your room already, I will come to get you in time for breakfast." He added. She could feel his gaze on her but she didn’t look up at him.
She didn’t respond but got out of bed, feeling slightly ticked off. He blocked her path, causing her to look up at him.
"Is something wrong?" She asked with raised brows.
"No," he said without hesitation as he stared hard at her face.
He pulled her to his body and she gasped. His hands trailed her outline and he planted a kiss on her forehead before he let her go.
Mauve went red and stomped away from him. She could hear his chuckle behind her. She hated his guts and how it was so easy for him to get under her skin either by teasing her or pissing her off.
She pulled open the connecting door and walked in to see Mill already in there. Did he know she was really here or he guessed?
"Mill," Mauve called and closed the door behind her.
"Mauve, you’re awake." She replied.
"Would you like to have your bath now? I already asked the servants to get the water ready, they would be here any minute."
Mauve smiled at her and sat on the bed. She could feel Mill’s gaze on the shirt. Mauve reddened a little as she brought her gaze down.
"May I ask what happened to the nightdress? Was it not to your liking? I could have changed it." Mill asked.
"You may not ask and no, it was perfectly fine," Mauve replied and sat on the bed.
"If it’s merely dirty, I would like to wash it up."
"Don’t worry about it, Mill." She said sternly.
"Yes, Mauve," Mill replied and walked closer to the bed. Her eyes widened a little as her gaze rested on Mauve’s neck but she didn’t say a word about it.
Suddenly, a knock rang out and she rushed to the door, throwing it open. The two servants rushed in after giving her a soft bow. They dropped the water and the tub and quickly left the room.
Mauve took a quick bath and just let her thoughts drift and Mill helped her clean up. She was surprisingly not as tired as she thought she would be. She would most likely occupy her day by tending to the garden and reading in the library.
She was dressed by the time Jael stepped through the connecting door. Mill stopped brushing Mauve’s hair and gave Jael a low bow.
"Your Grace."
He merely waved in her direction before turning his gaze to Mauve. She quickly looked away from him and kept her gaze locked on the mirror.
"Carry on, Mill. Don’t let me interrupt you." He said when Mill didn’t show any sign of resuming.
"I am done," she replied.
"Is that so?" He asked and walked across the room, he was behind her dresser in no time.
He leaned forward and asked directly into her ear. "Are you ready then?"
Mauve shivered a little and slowly nodded.
