Chapter 169: 169. Removal

Jael softly touched Mauve as she lay on the bed. It wasn’t his fault he misunderstood the situation. She really looked like the physician was going to stab her in the neck.

It didn’t help that the moment he walked into the room the first thing he could pick up was her fear and with just one look at her face he could tell just how anxious she was.

She was looking up at him with wide eyes, trying to convince him to stay. As much as he would like to stay with her for the process, he doubted the physician would be able to do anything with him here. To avoid that stab in the neck, it would be best if he left.

He found it odd that the physician had still not adjusted to his presence. Maybe that wasn’t odd at all. He turned to look at Jean who was now standing upright and looking stiff as a board.

The physician didn’t make eye contact with him and just looked straight ahead. Jael could loudly hear how loudly his heart was beating. He wanted to say something to the physician but decided against it. He didn’t want to make the physician any more anxious.

"Mill," he said instead.

"Yes Sire," she responded immediately.

"I’d leave it to you," he said and started to pull his hand away from the side of Mauve’s face. She grabbed his arm and then slowly let go.

He looked away from her, it was best he left. He didn’t know how painful the process was but he doubted would be able to stay still if he heard even the slightest indication that she was in any form of pain.

"You can count on me," Mill said.

Jael turned around and made his way to the door, he didn’t stop walking until he was outside of it. He looked back before he closed the door to see Mauve looking at him.

She had a helpless look on her face and Jael had to force himself to look away. He shut the door and stood behind waiting.

...

Mauve watched the door close and fell back onto the bed. She wished Jael had been able to stay with her but that was obviously that was out of the question.

Mill adjusted the pillow under her making sure she was comfortable. She smiled at Mauve and Mauve gave her a stiff smile. Everyone seemed to have it easy except here.

"I am right here, okay?"

Mauve nodded and water gathered in her eyes. Jean walked closer and carefully raised her loose dress high up to her neck. Mill held it up, and a lamp was also brought closer.

"Wouldn’t it be best to do this in the daylight?" Mauve suddenly said, anything to stall for time.

"No, it’s fine." Jean immediately said and moved the knife closer to her. "I can see just fine."

Mauve clammed her eyes shut. Her heart was beating out of her chest and her ears were ringing in anticipation of the pain. She felt something cold against her skin and jerked.

Jean moved back so fast, "Please try not to move so much." He sounded horrified.

She nodded, still closing her eyes. She bit the inside of her cheeks as Jean moved closer to her. He put the knife to the first stitch at the top of her shoulder. She felt it loosen.

"Please give me that," he said to Mill.

Mauve opened her eyes to see Mill handing some metal-like substance to Jean. Suddenly she felt a slight tug as he pulled the thread out.

"One out, many more to go," Jean announced with pride. "Did it hurt?"

"No," Mauve said glumly.

It didn’t hurt, yeah it was a weird sensation to have something being pulled from her skin but it wasn’t pain she felt. Mauve squinted her eyes, she was embarrassed for making such a fuss.

Taking out all the stitches from her hand took a while and though there were a few times it hurt but it was nothing significant.

"All done," Jean announced as he pulled out the last string.

Mauve finally looked back at her shoulders and was greeted with a lot of holes from where the strings were pulled out. The wounds themselves still held together with the thread.

She winced as she stared at the three red lines, they would definitely leave nasty scars. She already knew this. She shook her head a little, scars were bad, she echoed in her head.

Jean said. "I have to clean this and wrap it. Now that the stitches holding the wounds close are gone, we don’t want them to split open. It will definitely defeat the purpose. Please sit up."

Mauve tried to sit up but she had barely begun to lift herself when Mill helped her up. "Thank you," she mumbled.

A bowl of water was then placed on the table, Mauve could not recall when it was brought in. Another empty bowl was placed on the bed and her hand was placed in it bent at the elbow.

"This might burn a little," he said and picked up the bowl with water.

Mauve let out a howl as the water touched her skin. It burnt, it wasn’t even a little. It felt like someone was stabbing her tiny needles in her shoulders, all the way to her elbows. Was there soap in the water?

Before anybody could recover from Mauve’s outcry. The door pushed open and Jael rushed in. Everybody froze. Mauve looked at Jael with big eyes and tears glimmering in them.

"I-I need to clean the wounds," Jean immediately said.

Jael audibly sighed, "How long will it take?" He asked.

"Not long," Jean said and moved the bowl away from Mauve. He picked up a clean towel which he patted the wound with, drying it up.

Mill then took the bowl on the bed, away from the bed, and carefully placed it on the floor in the corner of the room.

As Jean cleaned her up, Jael walked further into the room, rounded the bed, and climbed onto the other side. He took off his shoes and scooted closer until he was sitting right next to her.
