Chapter 136. A Loud Splash
Chapter 136: 136. A Loud Splash
Jael jumped up to a tree, this wouldn’t help his situation but at least he could see what was coming before he got jumped. He peered into the night, just as the Paler hit the tree.
He heard a slashing sound and the tree started to fall down. Just how strong was this paler. Jael jumped off the tree just before it hit the ground.
He looked down at Mauve, he could tell she was unconscious. He had to leave now, if there was any chance of him making it there on time.
Jael was busy examining her and he wasn’t about to move on time, just as he was about to jump out of the way the paler grabbed his legs and tossed him to the ground.
Thankfully, he landed with his back and was able to protect Mauve. Using his other leg he kicked as hard as he could and the paler let go of him. He stood to his feet and staggered. The Paler had ripped his leg.
Jael swore he would need at least a minute for his wound to heal enough for him to move. He didn’t think he had any broken bones but the ripped skin stung like hell.
Nonetheless, he had bigger problems than the pain in his legs, the Paler was coming for him again. This time he knew he wouldn’t be able to move out of the way in time.
Jael heard the sound of something spinning through the air, he leaned backward just as an ax sliced off a part of the Paler’s mouth along with its tongue. Black blood spurt but quickly stopped as the blood coagulated.
He didn’t know who was more stunned, he or the Paler. He took a step back as the creature did the same. It looked to the direction the ax had come from and back to Jael. Its wide eyes blinked.
"Sire," a familiar voice called out to him. It was one of Lord Levaton’s guards.
The Paler snorted and tried to lunge at me again but someone stabbed it with a sword from behind. It growled in pain and immediately stretched out its hind legs and kicked the guard. The guard flew off without his sword which was still embedded in the paler.
Jael immediately noticed the jaw was completely healed. His eyes widened, this Paler was likely just as strong as the one Damon was currently battling or it was stronger.
It tried to reach the sword with its mouth but it was too far behind and it gave up almost immediately. However, it had a new target in mind. It rushed after the guard who landed on the foot of the tree.
"Sire," the guard who called Jael said again as he stopped in front of Jael.
He bowed slightly. "I apologize, Sire. We followed at a distance on Lord Levaton’s order. We should have arrived sooner."
Jael looked at the guard with a defeated expression. He did not care for the words that came out of his lips. He was just glad he could leave now. However, his gladness was short-lived as he immediately realized he might not make it on time.
"Damon is ahead, fighting a Paler," Jael said robotically. "He will need help." If the guards were here, they should be able to take on the palers without him.
The words were barely out of his lips when he took off. "Sire!" The guard yelled running after him. "Let me accompany you."
"Hmm," he said stiffly.
There was barely any pain in his leg and even if there was, he was too numb to feel it but with the speed he was running, it was safe to assume it had healed enough.
All Jael could feel as he rushed off was Mauve’s pulse as she rested on his arms and the stabbing pain in his heart, everything else was numb. While running he hit his shoulder against a tree but he didn’t even flinch, he just kept running.
The guard never caught up with him but he could sense him closely behind him. A branch smacked his face but Jael kept going. He should be out of the forest soon enough and he would have to cross a river, it was faster than having to go around.
There were huge stones making some kind of bridge, the only problem was that stones were quite slippery and the chance of falling off was pretty high should probably go around but this would save him at least fifteen minutes and time was of the essence.
"Sire!" The guard yelled.
Jael ignored, he stopped in front of the river and stared at it.
"You don’t intend to cross the river, Sire. It is not safe and the current is pretty strong."
"Go around," he ordered.
Before the guard could protest, Jael jumped onto the first huge stone. He immediately jumps onto the next one. He tripped a little but found his balance before he tumbled sideways.
It is a little hard to balance with Mauve on his arms. Her extra weight and his current state of mind is more than enough to throw off his balance. However, he was determined to make it to the end. What other choice did he have?
The idea that he might not make it in time made his chest feel tighter. If he had not already done away with his shirt, he would be worried that it was getting tighter.
However, there was also the fact that even if he did get to the estate in time, he might not be able to help her. His shirt and her clothes were soaked with her blood. It would be worrisome if a vampire lost this amount of blood even with their healing capabilities, let alone a human.
Two more stones to go and a couple minutes of steep climbing and he would be upon the Xanthus estate. Following the path would be easier but this saves him a couple of minutes.
Jael jumped onto the second to the last stone and he tripped. He landed in the water with a loud splash.
