Chapter 134. Her Red Blood.
Chapter 134: 134. Her Red Blood.
The moon looked bright as Mauve stood beside the huge rock but it didn’t make any significant difference to her eyesight. Aside from the trees directly in front of her, she could really see anything.
She was beside the rock for only a couple of seconds but somehow it felt like minutes. She wanted to crunch low but she was worried about ants or worse. Considering she couldn’t rely on her eyesight, it will be in her best interest not to move around.
She shook her head pushing away the thoughts of things crawling up her. The worst thing she could do right now was make her position known. Jael hid her to keep her safe, she had to make sure she didn’t make any sound that would draw any sort of attention to her.
She heard a loud noise and jerked in fright. Were they already fighting the paler? She leaned forward, poking her head out but she couldn’t see past the trees directly in front of her.
Not that she had expected anything less but she would like to know what is going on. She leaned back and bit the side of her lips. She was scared.
She clasped her hand together as she prayed that they would both be fine. The first and last time she had seen a Paler, Damon had ended up with a nasty injury. The idea that the same might happen to Jael made her stomach churn. She couldn’t bear to see him hurt, she hoped he would be fine.
She wished the guards that accompanied them earlier were still with them but Jael had chased them off and not long after a Paler had appeared. She wondered if the guards could realize their situation or if they have too far gone to notice.
She doubted it though, vampires move fast but she knew Palers moved even faster. They were probably already too far to hear the sound of Jael fighting.
Mauve heard a swishing sound, she frowned as she noticed it got closer. It was quickly followed by the sound of leaves being crushed. The sound was headed toward her. Her face broke into a smile and she poked her head out.
"Ja..." The word died on her lips as came face to face with the biggest Paler she had ever seen. Mauve felt her blood run cold. Bile rushed to her throat as fear filled her stomach.
It was close enough that she had no problem seeing it in the night light. The moonlight made its gray skin gleam. It was covered in dirt but it still didn’t hide its original skin color.
It was staring at her oddly as it crouched on all four. Drool dripped down its lips continuously. Its fangs stuck out its mouth, leaving it perpetually open with its long tongue sticking out. Its eyes never left hers as it stared hard at her. It bent its head to the side and took a step forward.
She wanted to scream and run away but she didn’t want to make any sudden movement that would startle the creature. She tried to stay as still as possible.
She knew even if she was to scream, Jael wouldn’t get to her fast enough. The creature would attack her before she could even scream loud enough for Jael to hear her.
Running was completely out of the question. Still, her eyes darted around to see her options. She could run and climb a tree but she remembered how the creature had jumped on top of the carriage.
It would have no problem reaching her no matter how high she went and she won’t be able to climb up faster than the Paler.
She could feel her stomach churn, the creature stank. Now that it was this close, she could smell it. The smell of flesh on the verge of rotting. It was the kind of smell that made her want to throw her head to the side and cough out her meal.
Her eyes watered, not just from the smell but from fear. She could feel her entire being shake and even as the creature took another step closer, she knew she wouldn’t escape from this situation unscathed.
...
Jael was having a hard time with the Paler. It kept drawing them in and jumping out of reach when they got close enough. He had managed to get in some kicks and blows but it wasn’t enough to stun the creature let alone stop its movements.
There were also its annoying fangs, avoiding them was a hassle as this particular Paler attacked with nothing else but its teeth, and getting bitten was dangerous. He would continually bleed out until he ingested human blood.
He wanted to get this over with as soon as possible, he hated the fact that he left Mauve all by herself in the middle of this huge forest. He was sure wild animals were lurking.
Jael dived head first as he jumped from a tree, he spun, and using his legs, he kicked the Paler as it jumped from another tree. The force pushed it against the nearby tree. It fell to the ground and recovered even before Jael landed on the ground.
He cursed and stood to his full height but Damon was already rushing after the paler. Jael thought its movements were slower. He smirked to himself. This battle should be over soon.
Jael took a step forward and that was when he heard it. A loud eerie scream. Jael recognized the voice immediately and for the first time in a very long time, Jael felt fear.
The fear gripped his heart so cold, so strong that he was certain he stopped breathing. He didn’t even realize what he was doing until he got to the stone where he left her.
He couldn’t see anything as he got closer. He rounded it and an unintelligible sound escaped his lips.
There he saw her lying on the floor in the pool of her own blood. Her red blood poured out of her like a steady stream. The patch on the floor was brighter to him than anything else.
