The Vampire King's Possession -
Chapter 114. A Mate
Chapter 114: 114. A Mate
Jael took his time as he made his way to the drawing room. He had a bad feeling about whatever it was Lord Garth wanted to talk to him about. These Lords were a constant pain to deal with and he thought he would be done with them by now.
He came down the last set of stairs and turned to the right. He took a couple of steps forward and came to his destination. The doors were slightly open and light seeped out of them. Jael pushed the doors and walked in.
"Sire," Lord Garth rose from the chair, pulling his mate up with him.
"Lord Garth," Jael said stiffly. "I hope you did not have to wait too long."
"No, Sire. We only just got here."
Jael walked past them and sat on the opposite couch but Lord Garth and his mate Lady Arora remained on their feet.
"Do have your seats," Jael said and pointed to the lounge they had been sitting on before he walked in.
"It has been a while since I have been in here," Lord Garth said while looking around. "A little over ten years, to be exact."
"Lord Garth," Jael said impatiently. "I am sure you are not here to discuss how long it took me to start performing my kingly duties.
"Of course not, I wouldn’t call this meeting to discuss such trivial matters. We all needed time to come to terms with your parents’ sudden demise. It has nothing to do with this. I was merely reminiscing."
"I understand. What is this about then?" He asked.
"Only matters that concern the future of vampires."
"Which is?" Jael’s frown deepened.
Lord Garth immediately sat up, and his mate adjusted so her head lay on his lap.
"A mate."
Jael felt his back stiffen. He has not seen this coming. He had thought about a hundred different things as to why Lord Garth had requested an audience but not once did this thought even cross his mind.
"A mate?" He asked with a frown.
"Yes, sire." Lord Garth said enthusiastically while his mate nodded in response.
Jael frowned, "I don’t see how that is a need."
"It is Sire, you should know how hard it is for vampires to reproduce and with the state of things, one cannot afford to be sluggish."
"I doubt an heir is a priority at a time like this."
"You can’t say it isn’t but a mate is a priority. Vampires function better when they have one and as King, it will be in your best interest to pick one."
"It isn’t that easy to find a suitable mate besides, I have fared this long without one. I don’t see how this is necessary."
A slight gasp from Lady Arora drew his attention to her. "Sire," Lady Arora called and sat upright. "Your late father had one before he even became King and by the time he was King, you were born. His untimely death was an unforeseen circumstance and one that must not repeat itself thus throwing you into ruling even when you were nay ready for it but as King of Vampires, you must pick a mate. There has never been a vampire King without one, well, according to Garth."
She gasped again as she realized herself, "Forgive my forwardness, sire but it isn’t as unimportant as you think it is."
It was said that when vampires find a mate, the thought of leaving them was inconceivable unless a mate died but the separation was usually devastating and not many recovered enough to find another mate.
It wasn’t anything superficial, it is just that they end up spending so much time together, they become inseparable and whenever one saw a vampire their mates were always right next to them if they have one.
To be separate can cause physical pain or so the rumor goes. Jael wasn’t too sure about this as vampires just pick other vampires that they were most compatible with, he didn’t think there was anything special about the selection.
Lord Garth rubbed his mate’s back at her outburst as she hid her face on his shoulders. "My apologies, sire but it is just as she has said."
Lord Garth looked like he was about to say more but he quickly held his tongue. Jael was grateful for that, he didn’t want to hear anything else they had to say. He wasn’t interested in picking a mate, at least not yet and there was nothing anybody could tell him about it.
He was slightly pissed off that this was the sole reason for asking to see him. It was almost laughable. However, he couldn’t tell them this was a waste of their precious time and as much as he hated to need people, he did need Lord Garth and Lady Arora’s support. Without them and Lord Levaton, he wouldn’t have gotten most of the vampires on board with him.
"I understand," he said robotically. "However, this not a decision I can make lightly."
"Of course, not Sire," Lord Garth’s face brightened. "Your mate must be a Lady with strong powerful blood. One who would give birth to the next King. Anything else is unacceptable. Blood as strong as yours must not be tainted. Thankfully, there are a handful of unmated Ladies who meet these criteria and would be more than willing to mate the King."
Jael tried to keep a straight face, he knew somewhere in the middle of this said handful of Ladies was Lady Sabrina. It wasn’t possible that there wasn’t any ulterior motive in this conversation.
"I must find the perfect one, however, if I am to do this I intend to do it with every fiber of my being."
Lord Garth nodded and Jael hid his smile, at least his last sentence made sense to one of them. He stood to his feet.
"I appreciate your concern and I hope you will continue to support and guide me like you once did my father," Jael said and started walking toward the door.
"Of course. Thank you, Sire, for putting this into consideration."
Jael turned to look at them and smiled stiffly. "Of course, anything for the future of vampires. The guards will escort you home." With that, he was gone.
