Chapter 280: Positive or Negative

"Focus... You can do this..."

Lyne shook her head as she kept her composure from fraying. She had just accepted Boris’s offer for having a date, and already she was getting flustered just thinking about it. After all, on top of it being her first date with someone that she remotely liked, it was also her first time to directly try and address her own prejudice against werewolves.

"You’ve made progress... Don’t let it get to you..."

Clapping her own cheeks, Lyne psyched herself up in the comfort of her room. It would be bad form to stand up her own date when she already accepted it, and that was on top of her already having accepted it in the first place.

There was just no running away now.

Taking a deep breath, Raine’s nervous right-hand woman checked herself out one more time. Patting down the dress she decided to wear for the night, Lyne then looked over her own makeup one more time. It was a date, after all, and she at least knew the proper decorum for such events.

Well, at least she thought she knew.

"Now or never..."

Nodding to herself, Lyne took her eyes away from the mirror and turned her attention back to her door. Surely, he’ll come to take her any second now. Boris was someone if not eager. His own desire for her was well known, especially to herself. It was the reason she even tried to entertain his attempts to change for her. She appreciated him and his actions, even if they did start off on the worst foot possible.

"Lyne?"

A knock on the door took her out of her musings, almost making her flinch on her bed before she hastily stood up.

"Coming."

It didn’t even take her a few seconds before she opened the door. Immediately, she took notice of the surprisingly handsome man standing on the other side of her doorway.

"Hey, uhh... How’s it going?"

Lyne was honestly shocked at how... decently Boris cleaned himself up. Wearing what was arguably his best ensemble of a pair of pants and a blazer, he actually trimmed his facial hair a bit, giving him a much smoother look compared to his usual getup.

"Good evening," Lyne cooly replied, her default expression taking over to hide her flustered self. "You look... nice."

"T-Thanks," Boris averted his eyes, scratching the back of his head as he replied. "You’re not looking too bad yourself."

"Thank you," Lyne nodded. "I agreed to a date, and I made sure to play my part."

She inwardly flinched at her own words. Already, she knew that she was blowing whatever part she was supposed to play. She already managed to talk to the guy normally. Why in the world did she sound so professional?

"I-I see..." Boris coughed into his fist, his blush making it obvious that he didn’t know how to respond. "W-Well, I’m here to pick you up. I booked us a dinner date at a nice restaurant I found."

Lyne outwardly blinked, her heart hammering harder the more she stared at him. Whether it was a positive or negative response was hilariously unknown to her as she struggled to act normal.

"Very well," she nodded. "Let’s be off then?"

Boris flinched yet again, taken off guard by her cool demeanor. "Wha- S-Sure!"

Letting her date take the lead, Lyne inwardly cringed as she walked side by side with Boris. Even now, she was trying her hardest to break through her own barriers. Why was it so hard to show him more emotions when she had already done so before? She even shared a kiss with the man just a few hours ago! Why in the world was she locking herself up now?

"In here."

Lyne nodded as she stepped into Boris’s car, taking a seat beside the man as he drove them off to their destination. The journey was awfully quiet, the raw awkwardness settling between them almost making her want to jump off and just cancel the date right then and there.

’What in the world is happening to me?!’

Was the fact that they were in a date making her lock up? It wasn’t like she wasn’t feeling anything. In fact, the boiling emotions within her was almost thick enough that she was suffocating with her every breath. Her heart felt like it was being squeezed, and she could only hope that she’d survive the storm of emotions wreaking havoc in her system.

Eventually, the car screeched to ahalt as they arrived at their destination. Lyne simply nodded as she let Boris open the car door, absently letting him take her hand as she helped him out.

Boris awkwardly nodded at her as they stood in front of the restaurant’s reception desk, "Let me check our reservation."

"Of course."

She could only watch as Boris talked with the woman in charge of giving them a table. All the while, she gave herself another attempt at breaking down her barriers.

"Come on... Stop acting like an idiot..." Lyne whispered to herself, her one hand placed over her chest as if to attempt to still her beating heart. "It’s just a date... Act natural, dammit..."

"Lyne?"

Her heart almost stopped, her eyes wide as she quickly turned towards Boris. Before she could even try to apologize, she already felt her mental barriers coming up again. "Yes?"

"We already have our table set up," he smiled at her, his face making her chest tighten up harder. "If you’ll follow me."

Lyne could only nod, taking in the most discreet breath she could muster as soon as Boris turned his gaze away from her. A part of her was already regretting agreeing to this date. Not out of lack of trying, of course. It was simply because of the fact that she was far from ready in the first place.

’I’m not built for this... This was a mistake...’

The inward panic she was feeling failed to show on her face as Lyne took a seat in front of her date. Seeing Boris trying her best, she could only hope that her poker face would hold up at least until the end of their date.

The least she could do was to give him the respect he deserved, and if this date could make him happy, then so be it.
