Chapter 279: Simply A Bonus

"Well, that went better than expected..."

Raine let out a relieved sigh as she stepped out of the meeting room alone. She didn’t expect her stunt to actually work but seeing as the Elders seemed to give her their time of day, then she could only assume that they were considering it.

"Or at least, Nathan’s making them consider it..."

Leaving her mate alone to deal with the old farts kind of felt scummy, in her opinion, but it was the best course of action considering that she was already pushing her welcome. If all else, Nathan could at least hash out the more proper terms that would constitute her tests.

Feeling through their shared bond, Raine could only cringe as she felt her mate’s growing annoyance at his current situation. The guilt of leaving him behind only grew the more she felt through the bond, but she could also feel him giving her a hint of reassurance. That beneath all of the annoyance and anger boiling within him, he still thought that she shouldn’t really debase herself by dealing with the idiots.

"I hope you’ll be fine in there..."

Giving the door one last glance, Raine let out a prayer for Nathan before making her way back to her room. Seeing as she had nothing else to do, she might as well just lie down and actually think things through.

"God knows I have to plan this thing out properly..."

Walking through the hallways, the princess of the Moon Clan let her mind wander towards what she hoped would be a more productive use of her time. The Moon Clan was certainly up in the air in terms of both leadership and overall stability. Then again, the same could probably be said about the Convel Society. The fact that the two groups were currently on the verge of a succession crisis was alarming if one were simply a normal member.

After all, would they still remain a member if they knew that their very group could be disbanded at the whim of their new leadership?

"Nathan has both groups under his control," Raine whispered to herself, her breath tickling her finger as she thought aloud. "It wouldn’t be too farfetched for him to just disband one group in favor of merging it to the other and vice versa..."

It was simply the most logical solution in terms of solving the inevitable logistical nightmare that would happen in the long run. In one way or another, Nathan will have to choose which group to fully lead. He could run both, of course, but the strain of leading two fully fledged organizations would inevitably lead to both stagnating.

Then again, wasn’t that the plan in the first place? Aspen was already slated to be the one to replace Nathan in the Convel Society. Nathan was already fully committed to leading the Moon Clan, and it was only a matter of time until he actually abdicated the throne.

"Then again..." she trailed off, her steps almost slowing as she mumbled. "Wait... I’m thinking in circles again, aren’t I..."

And wasn’t that the truth... For some reason, despite the mounting problems that she and Nathan as a couple were about to face, it all still felt as if nothing really bad was about to happen. There wasn’t any sort of deadly risks that they needed to go through, and they’re certainly wasn’t anything that was too pressing that they really couldn’t ignore.

In fact, this succession crisis that Nathan was going through wasn’t even that much of a problem. They could always just wait for Aspen to be ready; let him gather his courage and strength before letting him fully step into the throne. Conversely, her status as Queen wasn’t much of a problem either. She was sure that she could pass whatever the Elders could come up with, whether they liked it or not.

"Heh... That’ll be fun at least..."

Reaching her room, Raine absently opened the door and stepped inside. Closing the door behind her, she lay down on the bed and let her boredom rule her train of thought.

"Hmm... What else was there to think about..."

She blinked at the ceiling, her bond with Nathan humming in the background of her mind as she let her thoughts run wild. Eventually, her thoughts landed on her friend Lyne, her fellow woman’s situation eerily making her feel like she was missing something.

"Is she okay?"

Despite the constant teasing, Raine knew that her friend’s prejudice wasn’t something that would disappear just because the werewolf courting her was hot. She wasn’t that superficial... unlike herself, it would seem.

"Stop thinking about that, Raine," she cringed to herself. "Don’t let your tastes make you feel bad now..."

After all, what’s done was done. She loved Nathan now. It might’ve started off as lust, but she’d like to think that she truly loved the man for who he was.

Shaking her head, Raine forcibly reset her thoughts, feeling the soft warmth of the bed on her back as she slowly got drowsy. It was a welcome feeling, at least. She could do nothing else except wait for stuff to happen. And of course, what better way to make time move forward than to get some shut eye.

"I might as well..." she chuckled to herself.

Closing her eyes, she hummed in contentment as she focused on her bond with Nathan one last time. Checking on him, it felt as if he was actually done with the meeting now, and was probably already making his way to her from the looks of it. Maybe she’d be asleep by the time he reached her... Or maybe not...

"Oh well..."

Shrugging into her sheets, Raine yawned as she finally let herself doze off, the comfort of her mate’s lingering scent keeping her company as she snuggled into her pillow. A part of her wished that Nathan would wake her as soon as he arrived. Then again, she really didn’t care.

All that mattered was they were together. Anything else was simply just a bonus.
