Chapter 239: A good start
Decan let out a sigh of relief as they returned to the safety of the Convel Society. The journey home had been silent, but the comfort in knowing that Crissa and Cole were back with them alleviated the gnawing dread that was threatening to consume him. He knew that Marcus wouldn’t let this perceived slight pass him by without dishing out any sort of retaliation, and it was only a matter of time before the King actually made well with that unsaid promise.
"Did they treat you two well?" Decan asked. The two quickly nodded, making the former king let out a sigh of relief. He then looked towards Aspen, who was carefully monitoring the situation through their security cameras. "Any other problems?"
"Everything is quiet so far," Aspen relayed. "The Princess is right. Marcus wouldn’t do anything that could cause her harm."
Decan only nodded at the good news. It was going well so far, and he only hoped that it would stay that way.
Soon enough, they eventually arrived inside the Convel Society territory. Looking at Aspen and Boris, Decan instructed, "I’ll bring Cole back to his father. You two send my daughter back home to my wife. Let’s meet in the King’s residence later."
With a nod, the two quickly moved as they went their separate ways. Watching the two leave, Decan sighed as he made his way to the White Claw Pack compound. It was for the best to go there, seeing as Cole was of the same age as his son, Regan, and the two boys were good friends.
"Regan will be happy once he finds out that you’re back now," Decan smiled as he walked Cole back to his father’s home. "He’s been missing you, I’m sure. Though, how was it back there?"
Cole hummed as he thought back, "The one who captured us seemed nice enough, and he treated us really well, Uncle Decan. Also, I think he’s also one of our kind; a werewolf..."
Decan frowned at the new information. But before he could ask Cole for more details, Lucio had emerged from the door of their house, the man suddenly rushing towards them while calling out Cole’s name.
"Cole!"
"Father!" the boy yelled as he quickly ran to his father’s arms.
"Oh! Cole! You’re back!" Lucio cried, tears running down his cheeks as he hugged his son.
Watching from the sidelines, Decan could only smile before his eyes met Sasha’s questioning gaze.
"What happened?" she asked directly. She was glad to see her brother back but she was curious how it happened because the last thing she remembered was how their King Nathan was too adamant to do the exchange of hostages so she was utterly surprised to see Cole with Decan’
Did King Nathan permit the exchange? Was the Bloody Eyed Hunter already gone in their territory?! Sasha was silently hoping that it was the case that the Moon Clan Princess was already gone and for good hopefully!
"In the end, we proceeded with the exchange a bit earlier than King Nathan had instructed," Decan began. "It was a struggle for him since we all know that he already marked the Princess, but he still tasked me to handle everything because he knew it would be too hard for him to personally attend to this mission..."
"I see..."
Decan then told her the rest of what happened in accordance with what Princess Raine had discussed with them. By the time he was done, the atmosphere in the room had changed.
"I have to go to the King’s Hall and personally thank the King," Lucio finally spoke after composing himself.
Hearing the man, Decan quickly moved to intercept. "Ah, It’s not good to see him right now. He is currently an emotional mess, and I do believe you understand what I meant. It’s not so easy for our kind to choose any other option rather than to protect our mates, after all..." he reasoned out.
"For this, please wait for my or Aspen’s notice as to when you can finally meet our King. As of now, he had instructed us to confine him in his room for a few days till he can overcome his mate bond with the Princess. After all, he doesn’t want to act on impulse. The war with Marcus will still proceed as planned, of course, and he wants to make sure the plan for it will be based on cold logic."
Lucio nodded in understanding at Decan’s explanation and said, "Alright then. we’ll’ wait until our King is ready. Still, I am really grateful, Decan. Thank you for saving my only son."
Decan could only nod at the thanks afforded to him, and soon, he left the White Claw Pack compound in favor of making his way to the King’s Residence inside the Blue Moon Pack compound. Inwardly, he couldn’t help but admire the Princess of Moon Clan.
Somehow, he thought of how well she would be as Nathan’s partner as a ruler. However, he knew that such a thing could only happen once Marcus was already gone. Decan could only hope that Nathan somehow managed to keep his rationality as soon as he woke up, but he knew that it would be next to impossible for the man.

Meanwhile, Boris, who had a rather acute sense of emotions, suddenly stopped walking, causing Aspen and Crissa to do the same behind him.
"What’s wrong?" Aspen asked with snapped eyebrows.
Turning around, Boris had a naughty grin and replied, "I’ll be going on ahead to see how the King’s doing. I’m sure you can manage to walk Crissa back on your own. See you later."
Blinking, Aspen could only shake his head as he helplessly watched Boris rush back into their compound.
"Uhm... I can go back home alone, Alpha Aspen," Crissa bashfully spoke out. "We’re already inside our territory, so there’s honestly no need for you to walk me home."
"Well, I want to walk you home, Crissa, so please let me," Aspen answered with a reassuring smile. Inwardly, however, he was biting into his inner cheek, calming himself as he searched for the right words to express himself. "I’m glad that they treated you properly back there."
"Yeah, he did..." Crissa whispered out.
Aspen ended up scratching his head at her reply as they walked in deafening silence. Eventually...
"I was so worried," he finally uttered, making Crissa gulp as she turned to him. He then gave her a small smile as he added, "Seeing you safe and sound now makes me feel so relieved. Maybe next time, you should join the other females in the training grounds-"
"Sir, I don’t have any plans in joining the selection for a Luna," Crissa interrupted Aspen, an awkward smile coloring her face as she murmured, "As such, I don’t see the need to join the others in the training grounds at the moment."
Aspen simply nodded at the girl’s choice. He understood what Crissa was implying. After all, many females inside the Convel Society were indeed preparing for the selection of King Nathan’s Luna. However...
"No, that’s not what I mean," he corrected. "What I’m saying is that you also need to train for your own protection; like some kind of self-defense for if this ever happens again."
"Well, Father kept on encouraging me about it... It’s just that it’s not really my thing," Crissa mumbled out with a pout. She honestly hated any kind of violence, which was, unfortunately, the norm among her kind.
But then, her eyes suddenly sparkled as she bashfully added, "How about you personally train me? I mean, I didn’t want to train with the others because I feel like they’re doing extreme types of training. My father will also surely give me the hardcore version, and I don’t want that. I just want something simple enough to protect myself, as you’ve said."
Hearing her request, Aspen’s smile widened as he quickly answered, "Sure. Let’s do that then."
They finally arrived at Crissa’s home and Aspen smiled as he witnessed Crissa reunited with her mother and siblings. Crissa’s mother invited him inside but he politely refused and said that he needed to go back to the King’s residence as soon as possible. He bid his farewell and turned around to leave when he felt a hand on his arm. He turned around and saw Crissa’s blushing face as she murmured, "Thank you, Alpha Aspen."
Aspen replied with a timid smile and a nod then watched Crissa rush back inside the house.
All of a sudden, Aspen felt grateful to Boris for leaving him with Crissa like this. He was honestly having a hard time on how to approach Crissa since she was still young, but now, maybe they could have a good start.
