Chapter 238: The new information

By the time Raine found herself back in the Moon Clan Territory, her neutral expression was starting to fall off in favor of showing the growing fatigue. The journey had not been nice, and while her father had kept his silence, she still felt the anger permeating the air between them. It wasn’t a nice experience, and she really wished that she didn’t have to go through the same experience again.

"Boss!"

Raine let out a sigh as she saw Mia and Levi greet her. She had just entered the compound and was just trying to get her bearings back when she decided to take a visit on her team.

"Yeah, I’m back," Raine let out a weak smile. "It took a while though."

"We’re just glad that you’re safe," Mia sighed in relief. "That was the tensest few hours we’ve had of our lives."

Raine could only nod at Mia’s words. It was already clear to her that the two were up till the early mornings with how large their bags were beneath their eyes. Levi looked haggard, while his partner looked like she could really use a hot shower.

"Where’s Lyne?"

Turning to Levi, Raine answered him with a frown. "She’s resting in her room. She’s been quiet for a while now. She didn’t even say a word during the exchange."

In fact, if not for her familiar presence, Raine probably wouldn’t have even noticed her subordinate walking right beside her. Lyne had looked pensive the entire time, but she knew better than to bug her usually the serious right-hand woman.

"Damn. I guess the whole debacle took a lot out of her then," Levi hummed in thought as he leaned on the nearest wall. "At least it all went off without a hitch, right?"

"In a sense," Raine sighed. "Everyone that needed saving got to safety, but Nathan’s gonna be really mad once he realizes that we went behind his back."

And wasn’t that the worst part of the whole ordeal. Even now, the guilt of what she did was threatening to eat away at her very soul. She was sure that their marks would share their feelings as soon as he woke up. And once that happened, she knew that there would be hell to pay for her misgivings.

"Woof!"

"Draki?"

Hearing the familiar bark of her pet wolf, Raine quickly turned around and greeted her loyal pet. The wolf wagged its tail happily as it snuggled into its master’s embrace, hugs and rubs being given to it as its tongue lolled out in joy.

"Did you miss me, Draki?" Raine smiled as she scratched her pet’s belly. "Sorry for leaving you behind for so long."

The wolf panted happily for its master, nuzzling its nose into her hands as if telling her that everything was fine.

"He really missed you, Boss," Mia smiled. "You didn’t see her sleeping in your room the other day."

"Yeah, he really wants you by her side," Levi added. "Still, at least now he’s happy as can be."

Raine simply nodded as she continued to play with the wolf. Rubbing her fur, a sense of comfort washed over her as she allowed herself the brief moment of respite.

After a few minutes of calming herself down with Draki’s soothing presence, Raine finally allowed herself to stand up as she asked, "So... what now?"

Mia and Levi gave each other a passing glance as if telling the other to speak first to let them avoid the responsibility of informing their Boss of the news. However, after a knowing stare from Levi, Mia sighed before turning to their Boss.

"After everything’s said and done, King Marcus wants to investigate the matter regarding Yun’s death," Mia began. "We all know how that happened, and it might be prudent for us to probably stall that down, right?"

"Only if we even left a trace of foul play behind," Raine hummed. "I think we did enough to cover our tracks for the time being, but I know that we still have to confront that problem someday."

The moment her father knew of their actions, she was sure that they’ll feel his wrath compounded ten-fold by their apparent betrayal. A part of her knew that her team would be the first to go. And while she was sure that her father wouldn’t try to kill her, there was still a part of her that somehow felt that it was bound to happen.

"Got it," Levi nodded. "So we should lay low for a while then and see how it pans out."

"Exactly," Raine agreed. "We can be reactionary for now, seeing as the situation with the Convel Society still hasn’t changed."

That was just a war waiting to happen. Nathan wouldn’t let this pass by him lying down. And with her having seemingly gone back against her will, Raine wouldn’t put it past her mate to delude himself into thinking that she needed rescuing.

"Nathan will probably mount an attack as soon as he’s able," she sighed. "That’s gonna be a pain and a half to sort."

"Also, I’ve overheard Janus talking about some sort of undead program."

Raine raised an eyebrow at Mia’s statement. "Explain."

"There seems to be some sort of secret program aimed to raise an army of undead for the Moon Clan to use as cheap shocktroops," Mia began. "Based on what I heard, the King is planning on activating the project and using the undead army to storm the Convel Society."

"What?" Raine barely managed to keep her voice level as she spoke. "Is Father seriously going to do exactly what we just did?"

"That looks like it," Levi nodded, "Also heard something about them being poisonous to mutants and them injecting the undead with lethal chemicals."

Raine gritted her teeth as she thought long and hard on the new information. There were only a few ways the whole situation could play out, and she supposed that she could start her play right now.

"Levi, make Janus a new pair of glasses or contact lens. Do both instead. I want to give him a gift for being exceptional in his work. We need his eyes on track..." she ordered.

Levi then understood that their Boss wanted a spy eyeglass for Janus.
