Chapter 234: Nonsense idea

"This isn’t good!" Aspen burst out as soon as Marcus ended the video call. He was in the same room with Boris and Decan while the latter was having that fateful conversation with Marcus. As such, they managed to hear everything that was said. And unfortunately, what they heard was far from ideal. "Things just got complicated. We have to tell the Princess how evil his father was with him changing the negotiating terms like this!"

Meanwhile, Boris remained silent as he observed from the sidelines. He was torn on how to feel towards the situation. There was a part of him that was rejoicing at the fact that Lyne would be left behind. On the other hand, he still pitied Lucio if his son Cole would be left behind under Marcus’s jurisdiction. Obviously, Marcus only cared for his daughter and no one else.

Having had enough, Aspen moved to pick Raine up for them to talk about the current situation. As soon as she arrived, Decan then immediately updated her on the current state of affairs.

After hearing of the more recent developments, there was a terse silence before Raine let out a long sigh. With a hum, she said, "We can’t involve Lucio in this. You all said that he was neutral on Nathan’s ruling. That only means that there’s a possibility that he can turn against Nathan and use this situation against him in the future."

Raine shook her head in disbelief. She never thought that her father would even bother to see her current predicament as an opportunity, but then again, a part of her expected this to happen knowing how sharp and cunning her father was. Truth to be told, she was honestly hoping for some sort of miracle to happen. As if in some twist of fate, her father would somehow soften up or that he wouldn’t be able to get his cunning thinking back up to speed since he just woke up from a long coma.

’I guess he’s really back in peak condition now,’ Raine regretfully mused.

After careful deliberation, Raine clicked her tongue as she instructed, "Give me the pill. I guess there’s no other way but for me to personally take the poison in front of my father." She then turned to the others, "You can just pretend that you’ll take Lyne’s life if I won’t take the poison in front of my father. That way, there will be a valid reason for me to swallow the pill. At this point, I can’t afford for my father to be suspicious of me." She continued, "Also, we can’t involve Lucio in this. We have to make sure that everyone in the Convel Society believes that it was Nathan who did the trade for his people."

In truth, that last part was mostly for her own conscience. She didn’t want Nathan to lose the trust of his people just because of his deep love for her. He still needed the Convel Society to protect himself from her father’s wrath, who she just knew would do everything in his power just to kill him.

"How about we let just Marcus think that it’s King Nathan that’s directly negotiating with him?" Boris suggested, making all eyes present in the room fall on him. "I mean, Davin and Nathan almost look the same at first glance. Marcus isn’t aware of Davin’s existence, so... Why not try asking him to pretend to be King Nathan in this exchange? I’m sure he’d be glad to do it since he’s already raring to see the man anyway."

"Davin?" Raine thought out loud. There was an idea there, but she halted herself from speaking further to focus more on the man whose name has just been dropped.

With a nod, Boris turned to her and said, "Yeah. He’s the one who helped you out during the night when we attacked."

Blinking, Raine recalled the man who she initially thought to be Nathan. And now that she thought about it, at first glance, he and Nathan truly did have the same physique and hairstyle. Their facial features were also similar enough that they could be mistaken as twins if one didn’t know any better.

"Hmm... It’s a valid idea, but I still believe taking the poison will be much easier to resolve," Raine logically reasoned out. However, a part of her no longer strongly pursued the option.

With the added choice on the proverbial table, Aspen shook his head as he commented, "It’s still a risk. I’ll contact Davin. It’s better that we hear his opinion on this."

After the call was made, every one of them waited patiently inside the room till Davin arrived. Like a flash, the man in question entered the room with a casual air to him.

"What’s the occasion?"

Now that Davin was present, Raine found herself giving him a proper look at him before she commented, "You’re his decoy before, right? Posing as Nathan to mislead us?"

"Apparently, yes. I honestly didn’t want to do it, but somehow, I needed to follow his instructions since apparently, he’s my uncle, "Davin scoffed. "Seriously, that uncle of mine owes me big time already."

’His uncle? This man is Nathan’s nephew? They seem to be in the same age only,’ Raine thought and that thinking escalated as she recalled some history before where King Arthur was already in his 60s when he had the baby Nathan, and his sister, Aunt Ester’s daughter-in-law delivered her grandchild during that same year as well. If her math was correct, Nathan was born just ahead of the aforementioned grandchild by months, but the baby suddenly went missing and was pronounced dead years after the eradication of King Arthur, his family, and loyal followers.

Raine swore she overheard her father and uncle Yun talking about it back then when she was around eight years old, about how they had a sneaking suspicion that the events were all a ruse, but they eventually backed down on the matter. Either way, Aunt Ester behaved well in accordance with her father’s wishes, so why bother wasting resources on the matter? In the end, Aunt Ester kept her quiet and became one of her father’s willing puppets. And as Raine grew older, she eventually understood the full situation, and how her Aunt willingly chose her path to protect herself and her loved ones.

Giving the man a scrutinizing gaze, Raine looked into his eyes, his irises turning red as she murmured, "You’re a vampire, aren’t you... And you’re Aunt Ester’s grandson."

Davin refused to comment, electing to stay silent as he raised an eyebrow.

Looking at him even further, Raine was sure that she was right in her assessment. After all, she knew how to distinguish a Yue’s facial features from the rest of the bunch. Before Raine could shake herself away from her thoughts, Aspen interrupted the silence and quickly briefed Davin on what had just happened since they were running out of time and must come up to a decision soon. Of course, the expected answer was given in response.

"My uncle will kill you all for bypassing him like this," Davin let out a humorless chuckle. "Clearly, you’ve all never witnessed him lose his control before because if you did, none of you would dare agree with the Bloody-Eyed Hunter’s plan in the first place," he sighed as he rolled his eyes. "But since you’re all this committed to this plan of yours already, then let’s just proceed with the one where she takes that poison. Cause, seriously, do you really think that Marcus will be convinced with a decoy like me?"

He then shook his head, looking at Decan as if he was offended, and murmured, "No offense, but you already told Marcus that Raine is Nathan’s mate, right? And that he already marked? If so, then there’s no way he would ever let Raine go and I’m sure Marcus is well versed with everything concerning werewolves seeing that your kind is his favorite! Who even suggested this nonsense idea that I act and pretend as King Nathan in the first place?!"

All eyes went on Boris, who ended up just scratching his head in embarrassment.

Meanwhile, Raine tried her best to suppress her laughter. She had the same sentiments, but she didn’t want to belittle Boris’s idea in front of Aspen and Decan like that. It also didn’t help that she got a little curious to know and meet the man she had once mistaken as Tyrone. As such, she didn’t say a thing and just let the events before her play out as they did.

Still, it also meant that she could finally thank him properly. "I didn’t get the chance to say it to you properly, but thank you for helping me out back then," Raine told Davin, interrupting the chuckles at how Davin just lambasted Boris’s poor idea.

"It’s nothing. It’s my uncle’s request anyway, and I can’t just simply ignore him," Davin murmured with a blank face.
