Chapter 233: Null and void

At the Moon Clan Territory

Marcus looked at the photo on his table, letting out a frustrated sigh as he whispered, "How could you leave me like this, Yun... Right when I needed you the most, brother..."

His return should’ve been a joyous occasion. Instead, he was mourning for the brother that he had just lost. His brother, Yun, was the only one left that was his own flesh and blood, and to think that he was gone as well...

He gingerly held the frame, lifting it up as he murmured, "I’ve told you dozens of times not to act on impulse, but you never listen. How could you leave me like this, Yun?"

Marcus shook his head with a sigh. He was yet to investigate the matter regarding the sudden death of his brother. Unfortunately, there was simply too much left to be done. The amount of things he had to fix as soon as he came back had been daunting enough that he had to put his priorities aside in favor of focusing on getting his daughter back.

"Arthur... That bastard! Who would’ve thought that your son could come back like this?" Marcus clenched his jaw, the thought of how Arthur’s son managed to manipulate his daughter Raine making him fume with anger. "I’m not even sure whether to congratulate him for staying alive after all these years, or to pity him for the horrendous fate that’ll befall him once I get my hands on him..."

However, he must admit that Arthur’s was rather resourceful. Try as Marcus might, he still acknowledged the young man for making it this far. And to think that he even managed to use the Convel Society to his advantage as its new ruler? How clever.

"Your son even has the nerve to negotiate with me about peace talks, mentioning that my daughter is his mate so he’s willing to put the past behind," Marcus grumbled to himself. "To think that he even has the gall to discuss having peace talks with me... He’s too cocky for his own good!" he scoffed as if he was talking to dead Arthur in person.

Of course, Marcus would easily decline that offer as he’d always do. He would rather die than have some sort of agreement with those monsters, and he wouldn’t let that bastard have his daughter if it was the last thing he did.

"I’ll never let a monster like you have my daughter!" he seethingly declared. "I’ll kill you myself if that’s what it takes!"

Looking at the clock, Marcus massaged his temples as he patiently waited for some sort of response from his missive... at least from Decan, if their King still refused to let his daughter go. After all, he was well versed with werewolves and their so-called ’mate thing.’ And if his interpretations were correct, then there was no way that Nathan would ever give his daughter back.

"Again with this..."

He still couldn’t believe that he was walking the exact same path he once did all over again. Those monsters were always snatching away everyone he loved in his life. They had succeeded in snatching Ava away from him, but he’ll make sure they won’t be able to do the same thing with Raine. He refused to give away his daughter to their kind without a fight!

The clock was ticking, and Marcus was becoming anxious at the constant waiting. He was about to stand up when there was a knock on his door. Bidding the guest to enter, it was then that he saw that it was Mia and Levi.

"My Lord, there’s been an attempted contact coming from the Convel Society," Levi explained. "It was Decan, and he wanted to speak with you confidentially."

"How is this possible?"

"I believe it was Princess Raine who made it happen," Levi explained further. "After all, the call came from a confidential number that none knew except for the Moonlight Squad."

Hearing enough, Marcus had a frown as he instructed, "Put him on the monitor."

The pair, who were still both panting from rushing back to the Yue Mansion and running towards King Marcus’s study, immediately moved and connected the call to their King’s monitor for a video chat.

Meanwhile, back in the Convel Society, Decan had managed to discreetly arrange for a direct line of communication with King Marcus as Raine had instructed. It had been decided that Decan was going to be the one to strike a deal with Marcus, since one of the hostages was his daughter.

"What is this? You’re bypassing your King?" Marcus scorned as soon as Decan’s face appeared on his monitor.

"I am a father, Marcus, and I’m willing to face whatever punishment my King would levy to me for striking a deal with you. "Decan admitted. "As long as I can get my daughter back alive, nothing else matters. And know for a fact that King Nathaniel will never hand over your daughter back to you no matter what."

"Is that so? So he’s willing to sacrifice two pups for my daughter?" Marcus scoffed. "Well, I wouldn’t be surprised if he would sell you all out if it meant having my daughter for his own interests then. Such is the nature of your kind," he mocked.

"I have no interest to talk about anything other than the exchange, Marcus." Decan blankly responded. "Your daughter is already a Luna anyway. The King had already marked her, and anyone who tries to turn against the King’s word and his Luna will face the corresponding punishment according to our law. But as for myself, I just want my daughter back."

"Interesting. No wonder you became this desperate," Marcus hummed. "If that’s the case, you should try and reclaim your throne back, Decan. Cut to the chase so we can face each other instead. I still have a score to settle with you, and I’m sure you can easily get the throne back if you truly wanted to," he mockingly suggested. "After all, there are other means of doing so without doing the Battle for the Throne with him. All you have to do is plot against him."

Decan promptly ignored Marcus’s words as he responded, "I need your answer, Marcus. I don’t have much time to prepare discreetly for the exchange. We have to move before the King wakes up."

There was a minute of silence as the two men stared into each other’s eyes. Marcus knew that he should take the bargain, so he firmly said, "Alright. I agree. Let’s do the exchange as you suggested. I’ll bring the two kids to the meeting place, so make sure you also bring my daughter with you."

Levi and Mia, who were still inside the room, exchanged meaningful glances with the same question in mind; ’What about Lyne?’

At the words of agreement, Decan’s eyebrows snapped as he returned it with a nod, "Agreed. I’ll bring the Princess and her subordinate along, so make sure to deliver my daughter and Lucio’s son back to me, Marcus."

At the subtle threat, a menacing laugh echoed from Marcus. Right then and there, Decan could already tell how the talks would proceed.

"Who said that I’m willing to exchange for two hostages? You’re already bypassing your King’s authority, and I want to take advantage of this opportunity by watching you suffer in the hands of your own kind," Marcus barked out. "My daughter in exchange for your daughter... Get Lucio to talk to me like you did, and who knows? I might consider exchanging his son for one of my people..."

"But you’re willing to do the exchange for the two of them in your message," Decan countered.

"Yeah... But that is if it’s the King that I’m bargaining with," Marcus shook his head with a smirk. "Obviously, things have changed. My offer will eventually become null and void if it’s not an agreement between me and the ruler of the Convel Society."

With each word that he uttered, Marcus’s vicious smirk only got wider. He was really loving how deep the frown on Decan’s face was getting right now; how narrow his eyes were squinting at his machinations.

"Call me back once you’ve decided to do the exchange for your daughter. Or maybe bring Lucio along with you so that you can also do a trade for his son," Marcus commented before signaling Levi to cut the video call.

As the screen turned black, an aura of satisfaction wafted off of Marcus as he comfortably rested his head on the headrest of his chair. Leaning back, he glared at the ceiling as he said, "This is really interesting. It would be nice to see how the Convel Society would fall with its own people biting each other."

Levi and Mia looked at each other as they suppressed the emotions that were starting to surface on their faces. Things were getting complicated and they wondered how their Princess would handle this situation with the sudden change oon King Marcus’s mind.
