The Untamed: Game of Hearts
Chapter 231: Poison

Chapter 231: Poison

Raine tightly hugged Nathan as he fell on top of her. She didn’t mind how heavy he felt, just that he had completely fallen unconscious and thus able to be left behind.

She lovingly kissed him on his head, gently stroking his hair as she murmured, "This is only temporary, so please don’t do things that would make them resort to erasing your memory." Raine hummed in hopeful suggestions, "It would be nice if you wouldn’t forget about me, so please, Nathan... Please behave while I’m gone..."

After a few more minutes of making sure her mate was not going to wake up, Raine quickly moved. Doing a quick clean-up of her freshly-sexed body, she grabbed her old clothes and hastily put them on. She then pulled on the bedside drawer and picked up the letter she wrote earlier while Nathan was at the meeting.

"I really hope you understand..."

With a sigh, Raine gently placed her note in Nathan’s hand. Sitting at the side of the bed, she then pulled the quilt up to cover more of Nathan’s exposed back from the elements. Absently, she found herself brushing away a stray strand of his hair covering his face, leaning forward as she gave him one more parting kiss on his forehead. The fallen angel couldn’t help but let her thoughts run wild as she felt her gaze remain transfixed at his handsome face.

In all honesty, she didn’t even know how or when all of this started. Somehow, Raine already felt some sort of connection with Nathan the first time she saw him, exactly during the night when his family was murdered. Piggybacking off of those feelings, her curiosity piqued even further the first time she saw him in that nightclub. Raine knew that her hunch was always right, and now she felt vindicated in the fact that she had been right all along in having suspicions that he was Nathan. She now knew why she wanted to keep him close to her no matter what. He was right... they truly had a special bond; one saying that they were destined to be with each other.

"The pains of destiny..."

Raine let out another sigh before finally gathering the courage to leave the room and opening the door. Immediately, she informed the guards outside to call for Aspen, waiting for the man to pick her up from her room and let him guide her towards Lyne’s room, where Decan and Boris were already waiting.

"Thank you for giving me this opportunity in hearing out my plan," Raine introduced as she sat on the vacant chair inside Lyne’s room. "As you’re all aware, Nathan and I are mates, and we’ve marked each other already so we have a strong bond. Because of this connection, I understand that Nathan would never let me go. I can feel his roiling emotions, not to mention how he wasn’t even telling me anything about his plans for the exchange."

She continued, "However, I’m quite different from Nathan in the sense that I’m not one to let my emotions take over in my decision-making. Maybe it’s because I’m not a werewolf, but I understand that werewolves just have these very strong bonds with their mates to the point of being idiotic." Raine sighed, "For now, this is the best solution if we want those two kids to return back home alive. Me doing this behind Nathan’s back doesn’t mean that I love him less though... I’ll definitely find a way to come back to his arms after this."

Raine finished her spiel with a determined look. She wanted to let the three men in front of her know that she was being serious about her relationship with Nathan. That she too, wanted to be with him just as much as he wanted to be with her... It was redundant, in her opinion, but she knew it was what it took for them to let her own plans go into action.

"We understand that, but you’re Marcus’s daughter," Decan pointed out. "We know that you two also have a strong familial bond that would be hard to break. And while I do believe you and Nathan won’t make things work out while your father is alive, you should know that it’s your father who instigated the attack on us while we were in the middle of having our peace talks. He left us no choice back then but to fight for our lives..." he explained.

After all this time, Decan finally had the opportunity to clear things up. He could only assume that Raine had a different understanding of the situation, and that was why she attacked the Convel Society out of some misconstrued notion of revenge.

"But that didn’t mean that you had to kill all of our people!" Lyne interrupted, her teeth grinding with anger. "My father begged for his life and surrendered, but Danos still tore him into pieces!"

"And Danos will pay for that," Decan reassured. "The Convel Society has laws. And rest assured that King Nathan is in the process of making sure that man will pay for all of his crimes, including his crime of framing Boris for his own misgivings."

After which, Decan then explained exactly how Marcus fell into a coma. By the end of his tale, the atmosphere inside the room had changed drastically.

There was a moment of silence, a singular pause stretching on into seconds before Raine let out a sigh. She whispered, "I... I don’t know what to say. I’m sorry if I acted out in haste in attacking the Convel Society..."

She wasn’t aware of most of the operations her father had executed during those years. After all, she had been busy performing her own tasks and responsibilities during that time. And despite Raine knowing that her father was inherently ruthless and without mercy, she still somehow believed that there was something good lurking inside of him. She sighed in regret. Was she really that blinded by the loyalty she had for him as his daughter? She knew that all of them wanted her father dead, but how could they ask her to wish for the same? Surely, they knew that he was still the man she grew up with as her father. She felt genuine care and love for him, as he did for her.

"Don’t worry. It’s not your fault, but your father’s," Decan shook his head as Raine dropped her shoulders. " I can only hope that when you return to him, you can somehow decide to do the right thing."

Decan didn’t know much regarding the circumstances, but he was still hoping that Raine wouldn’t tolerate Marcus’s evil doings. That somehow, she would choose Nathan’s side simply because that was the only way for her to return to Nathan, just like she said.

Another terse pause lingered throughout the room. Boris looked at his watch and murmured, "Let’s start discussing the plan, shall we? We have a tight schedule to keep, so can we just skip this moment and focus on the matter at hand?"

Not beating around the bush, Raine heeded Boris’s words and discussed the plan with the people in the room. After all the details were hashed out, another round of discussions began.

"Do we really need to do that?" Aspen commented after hearing out Raine’s plan for the exchange.

With a serious face, Raine replied, "Yes. It’s the only way for a peaceful exchange to even happen. No one knows my father as well as I do, so please get me this poison. I’ll then drink it so that no one would face the curse for harming those that have an angel’s blood."

"But Boss, it’s too dangerous," Lyne stressed out. "That poison could literally kill you if you keep it in your body for a prolonged period of time." She was far from okay with the idea, but she was also aware that this could be their best option to make sure that King Marcus would keep his word.

"It’s alright, Lyne. You know how my father treasures me, so he won’t even have a second thought in making sure that I’m unharmed through any means," Raine reasoned out. She was confident that it would work. After all, she was sure that she wasn’t pregnant at the moment. Her knowledge as a doctor helped her know her body well. She was sure that she’d be fine as long as his father would keep his end of the bargain. It was just a countermeasure with how cunning her father could be.

"I understand. I am a father, and all I want is to get my daughter back safe and sound," Decan agreed. "So yes, I’m fine with any plan so long as it has a hundred percent success rate."

At Decan’s consent, Boris and Aspen both let out a sigh as they nodded in agreement. Soon enough, they eventually left to make their respective necessary preparations. Meanwhile, Raine wanted to stay with Nathan for just a bit more time, so she returned back to her room while waiting for Aspen to pick her up once more.
