The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 548 - 541: The Range of Truth
Chapter 548: Chapter 541: The Range of Truth
What to do next, Gao Yuan had two targets to choose from: one was a nearby factory, but he didn’t know what it produced, the other was the airport, where there lay the corpse of the Armored Beast he had killed. Additionally, there were other important targets worth destroying.
Malakal Airport had at least a dozen Super Beak Bird Attack Planes, which posed a significant threat to the Solar System Company. Although these planes were now inoperative, they hadn’t been destroyed, and that distinction was important.
While all the planes in the world were grounded, the Sanitation Workers possessed a squadron of attack planes that could still fly and be deployed into combat. Even with only a few planes, they could still greatly influence the outcome of the battle. Now, because Gao Yuan and his team had stolen the signal transmitter that allowed the Sanitation Workers to communicate with the Serpent People, these planes had temporarily lost their purpose. However, if the Sanitation Workers managed to rebuild or find a way to restore the signal that prevented the Serpent People from attacking, then these planes might be reused by them.
Not to mention, if the Sanitation Workers hadn’t previously kept their attack planes secret to maintain confidentiality, sending them to bomb the Solar System Company’s base a few times would have been too much for the Ram to bear.
Of course, it’s also possible that the Sanitation Workers’ signal range was limited, so they dared not send planes to bomb the bases of the Solar System Company, which was very likely.
If they couldn’t take these planes for themselves, they had to completely destroy them. Now that Malakal was occupied by zombies and monsters, this task was extremely easy for Gao Yuan. If the Sanitation Workers reoccupied Malakal, destroying these planes would be difficult, especially since the airport had already been raided once.
So, the target was easy to determine—it was the airport.
The explosion of the ammunition depot was earth-shattering, drawing all the zombies in Malakal City to it. Even the zombies outside the city, if they could hear the sound, were probably drawn back to the urban area. Thus, a upside was that Gao Yuan’s operations within the city would be much easier and more convenient.
An easy and enjoyable mission, with no difficulty whatsoever. All Gao Yuan needed to invest was time and physical effort, spending nothing but Energy Bars and drinks.
On the way, Gao Yuan encountered two groups of monsters, but without intentionally alerting them, he casually reached the airport.
First, he checked the situation. There were no human corpses at the airport, which was easy to understand—most likely eaten by monsters or zombies. But the Armored Beast’s corpse was still there, and, judging from its intact appearance, it hadn’t completely decomposed. However, from afar, he could smell a foul stench, and the oddly colored liquid beside the Armored Beast’s corpse indicated that it was indeed rotting.
Gao Yuan decided to deal with the Armored Beast’s corpse last, as he didn’t want to be carrying any parts that reeked of the beast.
The planes were parked in the hangars, and there were also a few on the runway, not just Super Gobsmacking Birds but also two small single-propeller transport planes, and a small twin-propeller plane that could carry about a dozen people.
"How do we blow this up?"
"Simple, just stick C4 on the engines, and repairing them will be impossible. Put one on each plane, using the electronic detonators from box number one. Let’s get to work. Wait a minute..."
Rabbit sighed into the radio, then said mournfully, "It’s been so long since I’ve been on a plane. Let me take one last look at this masterpiece of humanity, the crystals of civilization. Ah, it would be great if we could fly one back. These planes could even land on a grass field. Well, blow them up. Thinking that these are the Sanitation Workers’ planes, I feel a lot more balanced in my heart."
Rabbit was being overly sentimental.
Gao Yuan methodically attached the explosives to the planes and inserted the detonators. The explosion at the ammunition depot hadn’t stopped, and the cascading explosions of ammo and bullets continued. Taking advantage of the commotion, he hastened to blow up the runway, figuring the noise wouldn’t draw the monsters and zombies back again.
A total of fifteen planes, with two appearing to be broken. But that didn’t matter; as long as it was a plane, it had to be blown up.
Gao Yuan stepped out of the last hangar and was about two hundred meters from the planes when he took out an electrical blasting machine from his backpack. He breathed in deeply, flipped open the transparent cover on the detonator, revealing a button. Now, with just a press of this button, these planes would be rendered completely useless.
Before pressing the button, Gao Yuan instinctively looked around, checking for zombies or monsters. Although he felt it was unlikely, it was definitely a good idea to take a look first.
Then Gao Yuan saw four shadowy figures sneakily appear at the end of the runway.
Sneaky, stealthy, and cautious—they were clearly not zombies.
Gao Yuan’s position was not easily detectable; he was beside a fire truck, preparing to hide behind it and detonate explosives, and moreover, he was still over a thousand meters from the end of the runway, so those few people should not have discovered him.
Gao Yuan immediately changed his position and watched those people in the distance, whispering into the walkie-talkie, "Rabbit, I’ve spotted some people, they’re not zombies, they’re human! And they’ve also come to the airport!"
Rabbit responded with surprise, "What? People? They’re definitely not one of us!"
The airport was on the outskirts of Malakal, where there were already far fewer zombies, and now with thick smoke billowing in Malakel City and continuous explosions, the Sanitation Workers weren’t fools; they were clearly planning to take this opportunity to hurry into the city and check out the situation.
From the direction those people were heading, it seemed they were making for the airport control tower, and the hangar was not far from the tower.
After a moment’s thought, Gao Yuan said in a low voice, "I think they’re here to check out that thing in the tower, I need to take them out."
"You didn’t bring a gun... hmm, there are plenty of guns around to scavenge, what are you planning to do?"
"Ambush."
"Wait a minute, the enemy likely has battlefield real-time communication and recording equipment, you can’t expose yourself, absolutely not!"
Gao Yuan knew that entering Malakal meant dealing with battlefield recorders or real-time monitoring systems, so the enemy, being neither stupid nor backward, would naturally have these as well.
Gao Yuan felt that if the enemy managed to conduct real-time surveillance, then he would be exposed, but it was not a big problem because his face was covered.
But then he thought again, realizing just knowing there was someone incredibly fast was enough for the enemy; whether they could clearly see his face seemed insignificant.
After pondering, he put down the explosives and set his knife and other items on the ground, then stood quietly behind the fire truck with empty hands, waiting for the enemy to approach.
"I’ll just pretend to be a zombie, approaching from behind the enemy so they can’t film me... Hmm, need to watch out for two cameras, I know what to do."
The enemy moved quickly due to the urgent nature of their mission, of course they moved fast.
Gao Yuan pulled out a block of C4, then decided that wasn’t enough and took out two more, fitting them with detonators—the same batch used on the plane. Then all he had to do was simple: hold a detonator in one hand and in the other hand, a few kilograms of C4 with two detonators inserted as a precaution.
Attentive to the enemy’s movements, when he noticed they were less than fifty meters away, Gao Yuan deliberately let out a harsh scream, imitating a zombie’s cry, but he felt his own cry wasn’t convincing, lacking that utterly emotionless, purely instinct-driven sound.
The enemy heard the shout, they immediately stopped and turned towards the source of the noise. Gao Yuan threw the C4, watching it land; then his left hand instantly pressed the detonator.
Although no shrapnel would be produced, the shockwave from the tens of kilograms of C4 would likely reduce the four men to pieces.
With a thunderous explosion, the C4, controlled by the same detonator, detonated simultaneously, reducing both plane and people to smithereens.
Gao Yuan didn’t need to look to know that all four men were certainly finished, with no risk of exposure; the enemy would surely realize their scouting team had been attacked, but there was no way they could discover Gao Yuan through the cameras.
"Problem solved, no risk of exposure."
Gao Yuan said smugly, while Rabbit urgently said, "Get out of there fast, if I were the Sanitation Workers, I’d be shelling you by now, you’re within the range of truth... that’s within cannon range!"
