Chapter 547: 540

If only I had a helper, that would be so much better.

Until Gao Yuan had to do everything by himself, he couldn’t help but lament that if he had a helper, even just one who could keep up with his pace, it wouldn’t be so hard on him.

Gao Yuan set down the C4 he was carrying, took out a map, and used a compass to get his bearings, but he didn’t find any distinct landmarks, so, he had to get closer to Malakal City to accurately locate the ammunition depot.

Having a helper to check the map would have been good too, but alas, as long as the opponents were zombies, Gao Yuan was doomed to be alone.

It wasn’t even dark yet, and there were already quite a few scattered zombies in the suburbs. Gao Yuan watched as a zombie suddenly sprang into action, charging at a hyena at high speed, only for the hyena to turn tail and run, then get grabbed from behind by the zombie, and be forced to turn and viciously bite at the zombie, which bit the hyena as well.

The nearby zombies quickly converged upon hearing the commotion, several zombies scrambling to feast, swiftly leaving nothing of the hyena.

The scene was very bloody. Gao Yuan hesitated for a moment but ultimately did not take the opportunity to slip out of the zombies’ field of vision, because there was no need to.

"What in the world is this..."

Gao Yuan could now read military maps, but he was just competent, and there was a long way to go before he was proficient or an expert. It’s like someone who just got their driver’s license from a driving school; they can drive, but on the roads, they certainly can’t weave through traffic like a seasoned driver.

Finally, Gao Yuan stowed the map and hoisted the explosives pack again, then darted out fiercely.

Gao Yuan was becoming increasingly reliant on his speed. In a small town on the plains of Africa, it was clear he wouldn’t encounter the same situation as in Shenzhou. The zombies in the cities of Shenzhou numbered in the millions, whereas here, at most, there were twenty to thirty thousand, spread over a large area. Gao Yuan wasn’t scared in the slightest.

Sure enough, the zombies were drawn to Gao Yuan. Some tried to intercept him, some chased after him, but after quickly falling behind, those zombies gave up the pursuit because they couldn’t maintain interest in a creature that was out of sight and silent.

It should be here, a very large warehouse that stood out from the surrounding buildings. There were over a dozen forklifts parked outside the open warehouse doors, and now there was no one around, not a person or a zombie in sight.

As Gao Yuan approached the entrance to the warehouse, there was no need to look closely; he could see the towering stacks of ammunition boxes from afar.

Rifle rounds, machine gun bullets, hand grenades, mortar shells, artillery shells of various calibers, all neatly categorized and arranged by area, and to Gao Yuan’s relatively inexperienced eye, there were at least ten thousand boxes of bullets, at least tens of thousands of shells.

This was because the depot was originally the largest one, but it mainly stored light weapon ammunition. The ammunition depot for the armored units had a separate storage facility.

It wasn’t so much good luck as it was that Solar System Company’s early intelligence work was effective. Although they couldn’t determine the exact location of the ammunition depot or the types of ammunition, they were able to make an accurately basic judgment by frequently spotting enemy supply vehicles in this area and their final destinations.

Gao Yuan tapped the camera on his chest, then whispered into the walkie-talkie, "Nemesis calling, do you see it? Is it clear?"

After a moment, Rabbit replied through the walkie-talkie, "We see it, yeah, we are feeling the pinch right now, let’s just mourn for three seconds, three, two, one, okay, damn, this ammo depot is enough for us to fight two campaigns, there are at least a hundred million rounds here, tens of thousands of shells, it hurts so good..."

Rabbit’s thought process really was different from everyone else’s. Gao Yuan only felt that being able to blow up such a large enemy arsenal was a cause for celebration, not for heartache.

Still speaking through the walkie-talkie, Rabbit said, "Damn, I’m so used to stealing things, it comes naturally now. Whenever I see someone’s nice stuff, it feels like a pity to destroy it--it’d be better to just take it. Alright, now I’ll guide you to place the C4. It’s right in front of you, to the right...stop, put a big one here."

Gao Yuan opened his backpack and took out a five-kilogram block of C4. Following his training, he attached an electronic detonator, then whispered, "Just place it here?"

"Just put it down. That’s a hand grenade, it’ll all blow up at once. But this arsenal is too big, and the distances too wide apart. The can opener suggests, for safety, we should place a few more at different locations. Next is the artillery shell area. Don’t place it on the warhead, just put a small one beside the propellant..."

Gao Yuan placed a one-kilogram C4 next to a pack of artillery propellant, then whispered, "I’m familiar with this one, putting this together is the easiest."

After setting up the detonator and sticking the C4 to the packaging box, Gao Yuan continued, "What’s next?"

"That’s enough. It’s best to blow up the ammunition depot. Forget about the rest."

"That’s enough?"

"Sure, Skunk said there’s no problem."

"I always feel like it’s not secure. Such a big warehouse, just two blocks of C4 doesn’t sit right with me. Let’s add two more."

"The can opener told you to save them. There’s no difficulty blowing up the ammunition depot. The factory coming up is the main event. Place one more and set a timer on the electronic detonator, you can decide the timing."

Gao Yuan laid down the third bomb and then pulled out an electronic detonator. As he set the timer, he was very worried that it could explode suddenly, killing him right there.

There were two types of detonators, both remote-controlled. One could be timed and left beside the bomb, with a minimum time of ten seconds to prevent a careless mistake from turning the wireless timed bomb detonator into an instantaneous one.

Gao Yuan set the timer for five minutes and left the electronic detonator beside the bomb before quickly leaving the ammunition depot.

The remote detonator had a distance limit. For a target as explosive as an ammunition depot, capable of a ground-shaking blast, it definitely required more distance. Moreover, Gao Yuan was planning to use the noise from the explosion to create some distractions, so five minutes was an appropriate amount of time.

With the timer set and at a safe distance from the ammunition depot, the arsenal blowing up was no joke.

Gao Yuan hid atop a tall water tower, about two kilometers away from the ammunition depot. When the time came, he suddenly heard a massive explosion. It was loud, but not excessively dramatic. However, before Gao Yuan could recover, the explosion sounds began to intensify in rapid succession.

Gao Yuan now understood that the explosion of the ammunition depot wasn’t the kind that creates one enormous bang that shakes the earth, followed by a mushroom cloud. It was a series of blasts, with occasional intense ones, and though it was impressive, it wasn’t particularly shocking.
