The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 479 - 472
Chapter 479: 472
It was dawn, and the sun had just begun to peek above the horizon.
All was quiet; the battlefield, which moments ago had resounded with cannon fire, had suddenly become eerily silent.
Li Jinfang silently drew his bayonet from his waist and then fixed it onto the bayonet mount at the muzzle of his gun before he disengaged the safety.
But the silence was quickly shattered by explosions that erupted from the urban area to the east of the airport. When the people there encountered an attack, they had no choice but to start defending themselves.
Gao Yang pulled Fly over and whispered in his ear, "Go down and tell everyone to keep quiet, don’t fire any shots. Be as gentle as possible, the stairs are quite noisy."
Fly went down, and then Gao Yang scratched his head and said softly, "Are we surrounded? I don’t think so. If we aren’t surrounded, should we retreat?"
Gao Yuan shook his head and replied softly, "We can’t retreat yet. The distance is too great; we haven’t seen clearly what kind of monsters there are. But no matter what kind of monster it is, we are doomed if we encounter the monsters in the open field. Now is the early stage of the monsters attacking the city. Look, the monsters were directly dropped into the densely populated urban areas. Once they’ve slaughtered the whole area, they will start to spread out. Sooner or later, they will come here, and it won’t be long. But as long as we don’t make too much noise, we won’t attract too many monsters. We need to quietly kill all the monsters and then seize the opportunity to run. As long as we get far enough from here, we should be safe, because the monsters won’t wander aimlessly. It’s most likely that they will gather here and use this as their lair."
Gao Yang, curious, asked, "Did you think of all this from the beginning? You think fast."
Gao Yuan thought for a moment before answering seriously, "I didn’t figure it out right at the start; it’s just the pattern of the monsters. You get to understand after seeing it a few times."
At that moment, Grolyov, who had stayed on the first floor, came up to the top floor. He came to Gao Yang’s side and said in a low voice, "All our walkie-talkies have broken. Big Bird’s drone and radio are also broken. He retrieved the drone in time, but it still broke! However, Rabbit and Crow put their thermal imagers in the protective bags provided by Spark Squad, so they should be undamaged."
The support group hadn’t been able to properly protect their electronic equipment due to a lack of adequate protective measures. Protective bags that could function like Faraday cages weren’t available for everyone.
Gao Yang nodded and then said softly, "Considering the situation, tell everyone not to shoot easily and not to make noise."
After speaking, Gao Yang asked softly, "Xiao Yuan, is it safe to take out our walkie-talkies now?"
"It is."
Gao Yang said to Grolyov, "Our walkie-talkies should be undamaged. Distribute them, one per combat team."
The Serpent People’s spaceship hadn’t left; the mode of battle had already changed.
Gao Yuan watched the urban area being ravaged by monsters. He couldn’t see precisely what was happening, but he knew what would occur.
At this point, Grolyov couldn’t help but ask in a low voice, "Can’t we take the opportunity to escape now?"
Gao Yang hesitated and then replied softly, "Nemesis says it’s not possible; I think his experience is valuable, and it’s better to listen to him."
Grolyov looked at Gao Yuan and said with a frown, "But it seems very calm outside now. Staying here, are we not wasting a precious chance to escape?"
For Gao Yang, engaging aliens was a completely new field, so he had no experience to speak of. At this point, the best choice was to follow the arrangements of experienced people, and Grolyov was not being intentionally contrarian. He was simply proposing a battle strategy he thought appropriate based on his combat experience.
After thinking for a moment, Gao Yang shook his head and said quietly, "Listen to him. They’ve come all the way from Shenzhou to here, not on a sightseeing tour, but fighting through battles with aliens. So, let’s listen to him."
Grolyov thought for a bit, then nodded and said quietly, "Understood. We will hold the first floor, someone needs to defend below. Based on the situation, decide when to evacuate. I’m heading down."
When Grolyov had left, Gao Yang continued in a soft voice, "So how should we deal with the monsters? I mean, if we are really attacked by monsters and have to open fire, what would be the most effective way? Should we aim for the vitals up close or inflict damage from a distance?"
"It depends on the type of monster, but to be honest, I don’t know what kinds of monsters will appear."
Gao Yuan reflected and then continued, "The monsters are crafted by the Serpent People and come in great variety with a particularly fast renewal rate. Armored Beasts have high offense, high defense, and speed. But Armored Beasts are not the scariest; the truly terrifying ones are those insect-like creatures—numerous, fast, and able to infiltrate everywhere. Except for flamethrowers, there’s hardly any good way to deal with them. Let’s just pray we don’t encounter any flying insects or the like."
It was at that moment, Ailin, who was peering through a pair of binoculars, suddenly exclaimed, "What is that?"
Gao Yuan looked in the direction Ailin pointed and then asked for the binoculars. After just one glance, he whispered urgently, "Armored Beast."
It seemed the usage of Armored Beasts was indeed effective, as the Serpent People had started to treat them as one of their standard weapons. In this respect, humans and the Serpent People were not so different; an effective weapon would naturally be equipped and used more frequently, much like tanks and armed helicopters becoming the main combat equipment of a military force from the moment they demonstrated formidable power.
An Armored Beast had already broken through the urban area. It stopped briefly at the edge of the district and then, instinctively, it started to turn back. However, by that time, the area from where the monsters had been deployed was almost completely silent, leaving the Armored Beast somewhat bewildered.
Just then, a sudden explosion sounded near the tower.
Gao Yuan was startled, and he put down the binoculars, exclaiming, "What’s going on!"
Gao Yang’s face changed dramatically, and he said fiercely, "Sanitation Worker!"
The Sanitation Worker had evidently established contact with the aliens at some point, and it was clear they were well-acquainted with the aliens’ monsters, knowing how to attract their attention.
The Sanitation Worker certainly knew what the problem was. They also knew that the tower had been occupied by Satan who destroyed the friend-or-foe identification system. So, when they realized that combat was unavoidable, they seized a suitable opportunity to fire towards the tower, using the sound of the explosion to attract the attention of the monsters.
To attract the monsters to kill Satan was no help to save Malakal, but it was a way to vent frustrations.
This matter was so simple it required no second thought. Having figured it out, Gao Yuan immediately called out urgently, "Fire towards the urban area! Quick! Draw the monsters that way. Fire now!"
Gao Yang ran to the staircase in two strides, then he bellowed, "Tommy! Fire towards the urban area, quick! Hurry up!"
The Worker Bee immediately opened fire. He was outside the front door on the first floor, continuously firing the remaining rounds toward the enemy’s location, but it was already too late; the Armored Beast had begun to charge towards the tower.
