Chapter 454: Chapter 447 Show Off
A subordinate with a serious psychological shadow from his boss gave a very unqualified answer on how to behave in front of the boss.
Even if you’re afraid of the boss, you can’t just hide, right?
"Renato, just what did Ram do to make you prefer to hide out in Afghan over facing him?"
Renato looked at Gao Yuan with a face full of curiosity and said, "Come on, talk."
"Don’t ask, I won’t tell even if you do."
Renato was sitting right next to Gao Yuan, with nowhere to hide, so he could only shift his arm in an attempt to push Gao Yuan a bit further away and then he said somberly, "To you, it’s a legendary story; to me, it’s a horror story, okay, let’s end this topic here!"
Renato crossed his arms, using body language to emphasize his tone. Although Gao Yuan was still very, very curious, he could only suppress his questions.
The field hospital wasn’t close by, but there was somebody to guide the way and with an armored medical vehicle going straight to the hospital, it wouldn’t take too much time.
An hour later, Gao Yuan saw tanks parked in the distance and sparsely deployed anti-aircraft missiles; it was clear that the anti-aircraft missiles had just begun to be set up.
The truck followed the medical vehicle straight into a large tent area. The Red Cross symbols on the tents made it clear that this was the field hospital.
The truck stopped outside the hospital, but the armored medical vehicle continued along a dedicated path into the hospital and then stretchers were immediately ready to take the wounded one by one into the larger tents.
They couldn’t see Ram, but Li Jinfang was waiting there. As he watched others carry Li Jingang into the tent, his face, previously twisted with tension, finally relaxed a little.
"It’s fine, he’s not going to die, and that’s what counts."
Gao Yang muttered to himself, watching Li Jingang and the others being taken into the tents. He then turned to Gao Yuan and said, "Don’t worry now, once you’re here you’re basically fine. Fatal injuries are beyond help, but those that are not fatal will definitely be okay once they get here, we’ve got a lot of experts in our field hospital."
After comforting the equally anxious Gao Yuan, Gao Yang gestured to him and said, "The battle situation is tense right now, so let’s forget the formalities. It’s not convenient to talk here, let’s go to the frontline command post, where they have already prepared food for you."
Watching Yu Shunzhou and the others being taken into the tents, Gao Yuan whispered, "A lot of experts?"
"Yep, with money you can hire anyone. When I planned to turn this into our lair, I invested six hundred million US Dollars in medical facilities. Later... a friend of mine added quite a bit as well, all told it must be about two billion or so, in US Dollars."
Gao Yuan looked at Gao Yang with a stupefied expression while Gao Yang said with a face full of frustration, "There’s money but nowhere to spend it. We just don’t have high-rise buildings here, but we do have all of the most advanced medical equipment. The happy thing is, we have insufficient power supply, so many devices have become just for show, still not enough time, ah..."
Gao Yuan whispered softly, "I’m astounded by the two billion US Dollars..."
"Oh, that thing about money, well, spending it is what gives it meaning, right? I still have several hundred million US dollars in my account now. Of what use is it? Thank God I went on a spending spree before the apocalypse hit. Otherwise, I’d have lost even more. Regrettably, I underestimated the difficulty and time required to build a power plant. Two years and I only managed to get a half-finished project with just the foundation laid. Sigh, building a power plant in the wild is such a hassle."
Gao Yang, the guy didn’t put on any airs, but the way he talked about hundreds of millions, or even tens of billions of US dollars was as if it were just a few bucks, without any intention of showing off.
However, Gao Yang’s status was somewhat reflected in the field hospital. Those who saw him either stood at attention and saluted or stepped aside, smiled and nodded at Gao Yuan, or just stood to the side respectfully as they watched him leave.
At that moment, an old man with a full head of white hair came out of a tent. He was wearing a white lab coat over his military uniform, and his gloves were covered in blood. He hurried out, and upon seeing Gao Yang, he stopped immediately and hastily said a couple of words.
While stopping, a nurse helped the old man take off his blood-stained gloves, and as soon as they were off, the old man got up and left in a hurry.
Gao Yang spoke very respectfully with the old man, his expression full of deference. He stepped aside to give way, and only after the old man and a group of four or five doctors and nurses hurried off did he turn to Gao Yuan with a proud face and said, "Do you know who that is?"
"Who?"
"An expert, a big shot, Russia’s top cranial neurosurgeon, a national treasure in the medical field, and also a military doctor. Although Russian military medics are generally not great, not up to the mark, this top doctor is different. His level is really high."
Gao Yang boasted like he was showing off his prized possessions. With bright eyes and animated gestures, he said, "I’ve poached his entire research and medical team! Hehe, why would he retire and then join me? Because the offer I made was something none of them could refuse."
Gao Yuan quickly replied, "Oh, that’s quite impressive."
Gao Yang leaned in close to Gao Yuan, gesturing towards a tent and whispered, "See that? That tent is full of Americans. Look, that one there, see him? Let me tell you, he’s something else, one of America’s best private clinic surgical experts, not even forty years old, strong, experienced, absolutely brilliant at surgery. Back then I offered him a ten-million-dollar annual salary and he wouldn’t come, the place is indeed shabby, no amount of money could tempt him. But when I saw the apocalypse coming, I immediately had someone fetch him—no, invited him over, along with his wife and kids, a whole family. At first, he was seeking life and death, but once the aliens arrived, hehe, he almost died of gratitude towards me."
Like a landlord pridefully boasting about his lands, Gao Yang looked around the field hospital with a satisfied expression. After a moment, it seemed as though he suddenly remembered something and immediately said, "Hurry to the command center, there’s still a big issue to be resolved."
At that time, the whole hospital looked extremely busy, as there were many wounded. Gao Yuan looked around and saw that, outside and inside the tents where surgeries were taking place, there must have been at least a hundred people.
Sirte and Klaus didn’t enter the field hospital at all. Gao Yang led Gao Yuan and Xinghe out of the tent area, yelling at Sirte, "To the command center, go to the command center, everyone, follow."
An off-road vehicle was parked outside. After Gao Yuan got into the vehicle, he still couldn’t help but ask, "That Renato... his identity is all clear, right?"
Gao Yang answered without hesitation, "No problem at all, he’s one of us. What about it?"
Gao Yuan whispered, "Nothing, just that he seemed to have an attitude towards you that was a bit off. I was just worried he might have deceived us. May I ask why?"
Gao Yang thought for a moment and said, "The details of that are too complicated to explain, but to put it simply, a lot of people he knew, was familiar with, and had good relations with, were killed by me. I left a river of blood, and a few of them died quite horribly, possibly leaving some psychological shadow on him. But he’s definitely one of us. If it weren’t for him, my arm might have been useless now. Don’t worry about it, you don’t need to bother with him, he’s always been like this."
