Chapter 349: Chapter 342 Distinct Features
Yaral recounted the situation he knew in detail, and this information was truly important to Gao Yuan.
However, Yaral was perhaps too generous with information; it seemed as if he didn’t hold back anything, which was somewhat overly candid for a general.
For the third time, Yaral glanced at his wristwatch.
Suddenly, Gao Yuan had an epiphany and looked behind Yaral, only to see a long trail of dust rising into the air.
Only one thing could cause such a massive amount of dust and the deep rumbling sounds—it had to be an armored corps, the king of ground battles. Other than a lot of tanks, nothing else could create such a formidable presence.
Sure enough, a line of tanks appeared and swiftly occupied advantageous terrain right in front of Gao Yuan and his men. At least twenty tanks formed up, not in a single line but in an alternating, interspersed arrangement, with some in front and others behind.
This was merely what Gao Yuan could see; the distant dust signaled the reality that a large number of tank units had already encircled the area.
Upon seeing the arrival of the tanks, Yaral finally seemed to relax.
Gao Yuan noted the time; from Yaral’s arrival to the appearance of the tanks, twenty minutes had passed.
Gao Yuan understood what Yaral meant; Yaral had personally come not just to verify Renato’s identity but actually to buy time.
"General, what does this mean?"
Knowing what it meant but still needing to ask, Gao Yuan looked puzzled as he posed the question, and Yaral smiled and said, "As I’ve explained before, we were attacked by an unidentified force, speaking English and Russian, just like your troops... therefore, we have to be extra cautious. I hope you can understand."
So, there was also this underlying meaning to what Yaral had said earlier. By prefacing the current situation in Israel, even if he took a highly defensive stance, Gao Yuan and his men couldn’t say anything.
This sounded more reasonable. If Yaral had really just taken Renato’s few words at face value and allowed Gao Yuan and his large group to enter the country, he would have been grossly negligent in his duties.
The border outpost had but thirty people and two armored vehicles. If Gao Yuan and his men had any hostile intentions, this small force couldn’t possibly have stopped them. So Yaral personally made the trip, of course, to recognize faces but also to delay time, gather tanks and armored vehicles, and if Gao Yuan and his men truly had hostile intentions, Yaral could now control the situation.
It must be said that Yaral was exceptionally bold; a brigadier general himself, he was willing to personally assess the situation while simultaneously stalling for time.
After all, ranks in Israel are not treated lightly, unlike in some African countries where armed forces barely number in the thousands yet have generals and lieutenant generals abound, with battalion commanders itching for a general’s star.
In Israel, a brigadier general was almost at the level of an army branch commander, and Yaral was one of the few generals in the army. To say he held a high position and wielded great power was no exaggeration.
Gao Yuan and his group hadn’t intended to pull any tricks, and now at least a thousand Israeli troops, seen and unseen, had tightly sealed off the area. Israel seldom engages in trench warfare, choosing instead to defeat the enemy through maneuver warfare. They preferred dislocating enemy lines in battle, utilizing their superior troop quality to win in a mobile fight.
With a small population, Israel had no choice but to fight in this manner; hence, their main forces wouldn’t usually be positioned at the vanguard, to avoid being swept away by the enemy in a single wave. This was exactly why Yaral managed to buy some time with his pulling and dragging, allowing the tank units deployed in the rear to arrive just in time.
Speaking of which, Gao Yuan truly began to admire Yaral, who handled matters without leaving any loopholes. Moreover, Yaral’s words had preempted the situation—if there was indeed a need for a meticulous inspection of the team led by Andrew, they couldn’t find fault with anything.
Once the tanks arrived, Yaral relaxed considerably. He finally stopped checking his watch but turned to Gao Yuan and said, "Now you know that the Suez Canal has been occupied by those unidentified armed forces. If you’re to go overland, you must fight your way through. Are you prepared for this?"
Gao Yuan spread his hands and said, "Unprepared, but this issue should be considered by Colonel Andrew Marshall since they want to go home, and we are only a very few in number. Even if the land route is blocked, it should be somewhat easier to find a way to get the message across."
Yaral nodded, then he smiled and said, "You mentioned earlier that you’ve found a way to counter the aliens. Can you tell me what it is?"
Gao Yuan shook his head, then he spoke in a low voice, "I can’t say now, for complicated reasons."
Even with the arrival of reinforcements, Yaral’s attitude remained unchanged; he still spoke very gently, "But how can I trust that you have no connection with that unidentified armed force?"
"I believe you’ll be able to make a clear judgment soon, General. Once our main forces arrive, you will definitely understand," Gao Yuan replied.
Talking was futile at the moment. The main forces hadn’t arrived yet, and given Yaral’s caution and meticulousness, he couldn’t relax his vigilance in any way. But once Andrew and his team arrived, there would be no need for further words.
After thinking for a while, Yaral said, "We need a thorough inspection. I apologize in advance, but we must carry out a comprehensive and meticulous inspection before we can possibly allow you to enter our territory."
Gao Yuan just smiled without saying a word. There was no need for explanations.
Andrew’s team arrived.
The convoy could be seen from afar, led by armored vehicles. At least on the surface, the mixed force of armored vehicles and regular vehicles appeared quite combat-capable.
Yaral’s expression remained unchanged, but his security troops seemed a bit nervous. Yaral was in a precarious position, and if Gao Yuan and his team really harbored any malice, taking out Yaral would be all too simple.
A security guard approached Yaral, who just waved his hand. The security guard stepped back but kept a vigilant eye on Gao Yuan and his team, ready to act at any moment.
Gao Yuan called out, "Inform the Colonel, to show our sincerity, our people will voluntarily disembark for inspection. General, please arrange for the inspection. We are very willing to cooperate, after all, a candid attitude is a key step in building mutual trust."
Yaral, without any hesitation, spoke a few words in Hebrew to his security men, after which the infantry readied themselves for the vehicle inspection.
But when Andrew disembarked, especially when the female soldiers got out of the vehicles, everyone, including the onlookers of Yaral, were taken aback.
Female soldiers were very common in Israel, but the majority being visibly pregnant was quite an uncommon sight.
Yaral just glanced briefly, then he finally laughed heartily. Before Andrew even reached him, he turned to Gao Yuan with a smile and said, "Now I believe that they are from Afghan, because the characteristics are indeed very distinct."
