The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 340 - 333: Geography Blind
Chapter 340: Chapter 333: Geography Blind
Not every country had the capacity to store massive amounts of food like Shenzhou.
Not every country was capable of establishing a network of refugee shelters like Shenzhou, either.
What Shenzhou could accomplish, looking around the globe, only a few could match, or by the time they thought to do so, it was already too late.
The history of Shenzhou People suffering from hunger was too long, their experience with starvation too abundant, leading to an intrinsic and national-level fear of famine.
Therefore, no other country valued food security like Shenzhou did, from the government to the citizens—stockpiling food for emergencies was the will of the entire nation and community.
Gao Yuan believed that every country must have the granaries he was familiar with, but he realized he was wrong; Persia had strategic food reserves, but not everywhere had them.
The journey of over two thousand kilometers from east to west took six days to complete, which wasn’t particularly difficult, as the main threat was zombies, and brainless enemies were always easy to deal with.
Apart from twice having to take detours that might be considered obstacles, the entire convoy didn’t encounter a single attack within Persia, which seemed miraculous and incredible, yet was perfectly normal.
For a huge, heavily-armed convoy was not something any small troop could afford to mess with, and without a blood feud or being on the brink of survival, there was no reason to launch an attack.
Ironically, there were quite a few people attempting to seek help from the convoy, and even after discovering that most of the convoy were Americans, more people were happy than angry.
Colonel Andrew, with his bullying and tough posture, refused everyone’s pleas for help, unwilling to spare even a packet of compressed biscuits, but still, there were people who would cheer for him.
Of course, some were angry, but no one was willing to court death; after an apocalyptic-level disaster, those who survived didn’t become indifferent to their lives; on the contrary, they became more fearful of death.
Now that they had almost crossed the entire territory of Persia, the smooth progress of the journey resulted in diverging opinions among the people at Kandahar Air Base.
When it came to choosing whether to head north or west, Andrew wished to enter Iraq to the west, while Cahill wanted to head north into Turkey’s territory.
Iraq housed American troops, but Turkey was a NATO ally, and the Europeans led by Cahill hoped to return home through Turkey, whereas the Americans led by Andrew hoped to first get to Iraq, then enter Israel from there.
"I know you’re eager to get home, but you really can’t go through Turkey. Don’t you know that the Turkish are a bunch of lunatics? They might actually have preserved more strength, but don’t you think that makes it all the more dangerous?"
Andrew was spitting as he spoke, and the way he gesticulated made him look quite comical.
Cahill was much calmer, and he showed no signs of yielding.
"We want to go home."
"You want to go home, but you don’t want to get killed, right? If you don’t want to die, then don’t go through Turkey!"
"We want to go home, and Turkey is the only way."
Andrew turned around, holding his head in his hands, while Cahill continued indifferently, "The only way for you to get home is to cross the Atlantic, but for us, just passing through Turkey will take us there—we want to go home."
Pointing to his head, Andrew said, "But do you really think you’ll make it back? Why not go through Iraq? It’s further, but it’s safer!"
"No, no, no, look at the map! Buddy, look at the map. Going through Turkey might seem closer, but you have to pass through Eastern Europe, through Central Europe—you’re far from home. Look at this route, if we both reach Africa, go around the Mediterranean coast, and finally through the Strait of Gibraltar, you could still get home! Why insist on going through Turkey?"
Cahill looked at the world map and then shook his head, "No, we need to get home, we’ll take the shortest route, no one wants to go around the Mediterranean."
Gao Yuan and his group were headed to Africa, and they could only go west; they had no choice, and therefore no need to choose, but Cahill was different, he had to make a choice. However, Cahill’s choice infuriated Andrew.
Cahill was unyielding, and Andrew was so angry he almost went mad, but at this time, Renato casually said, "Wait a second."
Renato walked to the front of the vehicle, pointed at the map on the hood and said to Cahill, "Have you studied this map?"
After thinking about it, Cahill said, "I’ve looked at it."
"Then do you know that if you take the route through Turkey, you must pass through the Bosporus Strait, and to cross the Bosporus Strait, you have to go through Constantinople? Constantinople is a massive city with a population over ten million, which means it’s now full of zombies. Think about these things, are you still certain you want to pass through Turkey?"
Cahill’s face was a portrait of confusion as he looked at the map and said, "Strait?"
Andrew also frowned and said, "What does ’strait’ mean?"
Renato looked unsurprised, while Li Yang was as if struck by lightning before he said in shock, "You don’t know what the Bosporus Strait is?"
Andrew and Cahill looked at each other, then Andrew said in a low voice, "My geographical knowledge isn’t very good."
But Cahill said confidently, "Why should I know about the Bosporus Strait?"
Li Yang was speechless, but Renato said to Cahill, "Yes, you don’t need to know about Turkey’s terrain, but please believe me, if you go through Turkish territory, you will all die."
Making a throat-slashing gesture, Renato spoke with a serious face, "I have very accurate intelligence that Turkey has wanted to kill you for a long time. You may see the arrival of the aliens as a crisis, but the Turkish see it as a godsent opportunity. So, you’d better go around Turkey."
Cahill sighed, "The soldiers strongly hope to return home as soon as possible, I must listen to their voices. Besides, Turkey is a NATO ally, I think they probably won’t stop us. Hmm, I need to think about this..."
Cahill looked at Andrew again, then said with a touch of confusion, "Could you explain the Bosporus Strait to me in detail?"
After thinking for a while, Andrew said, "All you need to know is that it’s a strait, unless you want to swim back. The main point is that there are a lot of zombies there."
Li Yang said in a low voice, "That’s right, and you must also go through Constantinople, because that’s the only route."
Renato gave a wry smile, "Do you have a few hundred soldiers, and not one of them passed a geography test? Grab a map, ask those soldiers, especially the Germans, they will give you the correct answer."
Cahill actually did just that, and Andrew really went with him.
Watching the two military officers leave, Gao Yuan said to Li Yang, "I think, even I know about geography, a colonel and a major not knowing? That’s quite incredible."
Renato spoke disdainfully, "It’s not surprising, after spending time with these people, you’ll find they really are quite ignorant, just like you thought Sydney was the capital of Australia. It’s quite normal."
Gao Yuan sighed, "No, I know the capital of Australia is Canberra."
Renato was taken aback, then he chuckled lightly, "Is that so, you actually know, uh, then your geographical knowledge is pretty good."
