Chapter 286 - 280: Dilemma

Chapter 286: Chapter 280: Dilemma

Gao Yuan wasn’t afraid of anything except for the kind of bugs created and deployed by the Serpent People.

Bullets could deal with zombies, shells could take on Armored Beasts, but when it came to these omnipresent bugs, which came in an overwhelming swarm, weapons other than flamethrowers were basically ineffective.

Electric mosquito rackets and insecticides were indeed very useful when dealing with individual or small numbers of bugs, but against a sky-darkening swarm, it was hopeless. The simplest analogy is a locust plague; just by thinking about those swarming locusts blotting out the sky, one would understand why these methods were futile.

Gao Yuan ran fast. He looked back and saw no bugs following him, so he paused for a while, about two minutes later, he once again saw the massive swarm of bugs fluttering in the sky.

Having little understanding of insects, Gao Yuan didn’t know how fast these bugs could fly. However, when compared to the familiar characters and flies, these bugs were a lot faster, even faster than the bees he knew of, at least twice as fast.

Anyone who had ever poked at a wasp’s nest would know that when wasps or bees fly out to attack a person, there’s simply no escaping them.

Mosquitos also actively attack humans but merely cause bites all over the body at worst, possibly transmitting diseases. These bugs deployed by the Serpent People, however, were a different story; they were deadly, and quickly so.

All small insects have one trait in common: they cannot fly long distances and certainly not very quickly.

Gao Yuan observed the bugs chasing him, a dense swarm, unable to keep up with his speed. But in just a short time, he had run four or five hundred meters. In theory, he should have been out of the bugs’ visual range by then, yet these bugs still accurately followed him.

Could it be that these bugs were tracking by scent? This possibility was quite high, but in that case, unless he could run very far away, shaking off the pursuit of these bugs wouldn’t be easy.

Gao Yuan turned a corner and ran towards another direction, another forty or fifty meters, then waited again.

The bugs flew over, making a clear turn in the air, and then once again headed straight for Gao Yuan.

Without a doubt, these bugs were tracking their prey by scent.

But these bugs definitely couldn’t fly too far. Not wanting to face the bugs in a life-or-death battle, Gao Yuan immediately started running again.

"Nemesis calling, I haven’t found any zombies, but I’ve encountered a lot of bugs. They look somewhat like wasps, but are slightly larger, not quite the same as the beetles we’ve seen before. They buzz when they fly, much louder than that of bees. I’m going back to scout again, over."

Panxin said anxiously, "The convoy should move back five kilometers, we’ve left a vehicle waiting for you, get back here now, don’t scout any further."

Gao Yuan whispered, "No, I must scout again. I have to find out what exactly has happened here. You guys move back another ten kilometers! At least ten kilometers, then I will create some noise and see if there are any zombies or other alien creatures here. If this place is occupied by large creatures like Armored Beasts, then we can only retreat. If there are only bugs here, we might still be able to push through, over."

"Received, take care of yourself. Safety first, over."

Gao Yuan didn’t speak further. He changed direction and headed back towards the outskirts of the buildings near Bostan.

He stopped, took out a grenade, inhaled deeply, and threw the grenade far away, about four or five hundred meters away from him.

The grenade exploded on the ground, and the smoke and dust gradually dispersed. After about two minutes, no zombies appeared, nor any other creatures, but at the site of the grenade explosion, patches of black mist seemed to appear.

Filled with fear, Gao Yuan raised his binoculars and took a careful look.

The distance was too far, the naked eye couldn’t see the bugs, but when the swarms appeared like puffs of smoke, they were very clear to see, and the binoculars were just for confirmation.

They were indeed bugs, flying over from every corner of the small city.

No matter how small a creature, when their numbers reach a certain level, they become terrifying.

Gao Yuan turned and ran.

"Nemesis calling, no zombies, but bugs everywhere, over."

Gao Yuan felt a heaviness in his heart because his earlier speculations were slowly becoming reality.

If the Serpent People were seeking an effective tactic and weapon to eradicate humanity, then bugs were obviously a good choice.

Gao Yuan took a wide detour, and then he saw a lone car left on the highway. He ran over, opened the door, got in, and immediately said, "Let’s go!"

The engine was still running; Panxin was driving, but Colonel Arif was also in the car.

"How’s it looking?"

"Not good. No zombies, just a lot of bugs."

While Gao Yuan spoke with Panxin, a translator relayed the message to Colonel Arif. After Gao Yuan finished, Colonel Arif, slightly puzzled, said, "Are bugs that scary?"

Gao Yuan let out a long sigh and said, "Yes, the bugs are terrifying. I’d rather face zombies than deal with these bugs."

"So, there are a lot of bugs?"

"A lot. Very, very many."

Previously, Gao Yuan and his team had thoroughly informed the Pakistan side about the characteristics of the Serpent People, the strategies they adopt, and the monsters that had appeared before, so Arif knew what these bugs meant. But after thinking it over, he said, "Bugs can’t threaten us inside the car, right? If there are only bugs in the city, then could we leave the trucks here and use fully enclosed vehicles to make a run for it?"

Many of the escorting soldiers were riding in trucks, so these soldiers couldn’t possibly force their way through areas occupied by bug swarms. However, if it was just Gao Yuan’s small team, a few jeeps or sedans would suffice, along with a few trucks carrying supplies. It was worth a try.

But after brief contemplation, Gao Yuan abandoned the idea of making a forced rush through.

"No, because when the Serpent People deploy biological weapons, they don’t release just one type; they will definitely release those large monsters as well. I didn’t see any just now, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t there."

Gao Yuan looked at Colonel Arif and said, "Do we have any alternative routes that circumvent Quetta, and also need to be sufficiently far away?"

Colonel Arif shook his head, his face grave, and said, "No, there are mountains to the southeast and a desert to the northwest, with no roads at all. We have only one route and must pass through Quetta unless... unless we head north, but that road leads to Afghanistan."
