Chapter 285 - 279 Swarm of Insects

Chapter 285: Chapter 279 Swarm of Insects

If it weren’t for the threat of the Serpent People, even the longest journey would simply be a matter of time.

Pakistan had sent about two hundred people and a total of sixteen vehicles to escort Gao Yuan and his team. They were to handle any danger, any danger at all, so Gao Yuan and his team didn’t have to lift a finger.

The convoy first arrived in Altabad, where they replenished their supplies. Continuing onwards would take them to the most densely populated regions of Pakistan. Previously, densely populated areas also meant a large number of zombies, so the convoy did not travel along the prosperous Indus River basin but instead turned west, entering the semi-desert regions of western Pakistan.

Battles occurred along the way, mainly against the threat of zombies. However, when the military escort reached a certain size, the threat of sporadic zombies could essentially be ignored.

They had been traveling for an entire month. In Gilgit, it was still the early spring, since the high altitude and continuous mountain ranges kept it cool. Now, after only a month, due to changes in the terrain, the season had shifted from early spring to early summer.

The next stop was Quetta.

If possible, Gao Yuan and his team would have preferred not to pass through any cities, but the issue was that all road networks were built around major cities. Yet, the situation was somewhat different.

Iborg City is Pakistan’s largest city, and the surrounding road network is dense and well developed. The convoy could completely avoid the city by choosing the route furthest from it. Quetta, on the other hand, is different. It’s a city in the semi-desertified region of western Pakistan, with only a few sparse roads.

After enjoying the quiet roads of the desertified region, they had to face the difficulty of having to pass through city nodes, and Quetta was one such unavoidable node. But once they got through Quetta, they would be on a clear stretch that was at least hundreds of kilometers long.

Gao Yuan sat in the vehicle, dozing off, while Xinghe leaned on his shoulder, sleeping soundly, her drool wetting his shoulder.

It turned out that even aliens drooled in their sleep.

The vehicle suddenly stopped, rousing the dozing Gao Yuan, and Xinghe, who had been sleeping soundly, opened her eyes as well. Realizing the vehicle had stopped, she finally turned her head and half-leaned on the seat, intending to continue her sleep.

But Xinghe, who was used to the bumping ride, couldn’t fall asleep again and simply sat up, stretched lazily, yawned, and asked with sleepy eyes, "Aren’t we moving anymore?"

The commanding officer of the escorting army got out of the car and quickly walked back, prompting Gao Yuan to also get out of the vehicle.

"We’ll soon reach Bostan. Not far from Bostan is Gujralak, and after Gujralak is Quetta. We are about to enter the urban areas of Baluchistan Province," said Colonel Arif.

The commanding officer of the escorting army was Colonel Arif, commanding Pakistan’s finest troop of two hundred thirty soldiers, ordered to escort Gao Yuan and his group from Gilgit all the way to Persia.

Colonel Arif could speak English and Urdu. Gao Yuan had requested that Colonel Arif speak only English because he wanted to learn the language well, so now he needed an English-speaking environment.

The translator relayed Colonel Arif’s words, and Gao Yuan listened and guessed, finding that the meaning was more or less the same.

"Tell Colonel Arif there’s no need to send a reconnaissance team, I will scout ahead."

Having sat in the vehicle for a while, everyone wanted to stretch their legs, and of course, Gao Yuan was no exception.

The last time they had passed through a small city, Colonel Arif had sent out a ten-person reconnaissance team. Only four came back alive. The team had encountered several zombies that were hiding, resulting in casualties.

Gao Yuan felt it would be better for him to do the reconnaissance. If there weren’t too many zombies, they could force their way through. If there were too many zombies, they would look for an alternate route, whether it was a road or a flat wasteland, as long as the vehicle could get through.

"No, no, no, it’s too dangerous. Let our people do the reconnaissance," Colonel Arif decisively rejected Gao Yuan’s request. He believed that ensuring the safe departure of Spark Squad from Pakistan was not enough—they also had to leave comfortably and leisurely to consider the mission complete.

Gao Yuan didn’t want the soldiers escorting him to get hurt, because after spending so much time together, everyone had become very close friends. More importantly, he did want to stretch his legs a bit.

"Tell the colonel I’ll definitely be fine if I go," he said with a smile. "He should know what I’m capable of."

After speaking, Gao Yuan turned around to grab his gear from the truck, slinging it over his back, waved his hand, and took off running.

No one could catch up to Gao Yuan when he ran, so even if someone had wanted to stop him, it would have been impossible.

While running, Gao Yuan hung his throat mic around his neck and put his earpiece in. Then, he shouted, "Nemesis calling, sound check, over."

"Mr. Jian received, communication clear, over."

"I’m going to scout ahead, over."

"Received, over."

It was necessary to exchange a few words with his teammates because Gao Yuan hadn’t even said goodbye to Panxin and the others when he ran out.

The convoy stopped on the highway. Looking up, there were no Serpent People ships in the sky. Looking ahead, the road was deserted.

This was part of the reconnaissance, at least to observe if the road was blocked.

After running forward for two kilometers, he could see scattered houses. If there were zombies, they would most likely be hiding in the houses by the road.

But these scattered zombies were almost no threat. The main concern was entering the downtown area to see the zombie density there. If there were too many zombies, they would have to find a way around, but if their numbers were manageable, they could force their way through, clearing the zombies along the way.

The escort team had two Infantry Fighting Vehicles, so unless the number of zombies was enough to completely bury the vehicles, they could make it through.

Gao Yuan slowed down as he planned to enter the first house for a quick check. This first house definitely needed to be inspected, and after a few more checks, if there weren’t many zombies, he would make some noise to observe the zombie count. After traveling so far, a basic routine had already been established.

The door was open. Gao Yuan pulled out his knife from behind and stood at the doorway to glance inside.

The room was pitch dark, but the half-inch thick dust at the entrance suggested no one had been inside for a long time.

Gao Yuan was about to step inside when suddenly he felt an instinct, he couldn’t say what it was, but he put his raised foot down, leaving a footprint in the dust before suddenly jumping backwards.

This leap carried him four to five meters back. Once he landed, Gao Yuan raised his knife, ready to swing it at any moment.

After a moment, looking at the silent doorway, Gao Yuan felt his actions might have been a bit neurotic.

Just as he began to smirk at his own reaction, he thought he heard a buzzing sound. Then, a black dot flew out from behind the door.

Gao Yuan’s eyes widened, and he swung his knife, splitting the black dot in two as it flew toward him. But before he could look down to clearly see what he had hit, he heard a buzzing noise like a swarm of bees.

Gao Yuan’s eyes widened in horror as he saw a swarm of insects flying out from behind the door, and he turned to run immediately!

He kicked his speed up to the max and screamed into the radio, "Everyone get in the vehicles! Close the doors and drive! It’s a swarm of insects! A swarm of insects! Damn it, over!"
