The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse -
Chapter 273 - 267 Miracle
Chapter 273: Chapter 267 Miracle
Under siege, to launch a powerful counteroffensive would require one of two conditions, either being driven to a dead end with no choice but to break out, or possessing ample reserves, ready to engage the enemy in a decisive battle of attrition.
As for the current situation, it was the kind of scenario in the history of warfare that attackers tried desperately to avoid and defenders dreamed of: reinforcements cutting off the attackers’ rear.
All of a sudden, Gilgit plunged into a chaotic battle.
The Sanitation Worker soldiers on the western front finally reacted. Heavy artillery began shelling the urban area of Gilgit, while tanks, covered by infantry, repeatedly charged Gilgit’s defense lines.
India attempted to leverage the western offensive to salvage its defeat on the eastern front.
But by now, all parties involved in the conflict knew that the Sanitation Worker soldiers on the eastern front were doomed, utterly doomed.
No matter how fierce the offensive, the Sanitation Workers on the eastern front were mounting a desperate, final charge. Their plan was to break through Gilgit and rendezvous with their western allies, but as long as they couldn’t quickly penetrate the Pakistani defenses, India’s resurgence of courage would soon be exhausted.
The premise was that it was a must to repel the Sanitation Workers’ attack.
But oddly enough, those Indians, who seemed almost intellectually challenged under their command, became impressively fierce when attacking Pakistan.
Disregarding casualties and moving in an organized manner, their desperate charges, under the control of the Sanitation Workers, were impressively executed.
Gao Yuan witnessed over a dozen enemy soldiers, one after another, assault a Pakistani bunker with rocket launchers. And when these soldiers finally fell, the Pakistani bunker, hit by four rockets, also fell silent.
If only those enemies had shown half the courage they displayed now—no, not even half, just one-tenth of it—Gao Yuan and his men would never have made it this far.
Could they really be from the same unit?
If it weren’t for the fact that Gao Yuan had just fought through them, he would’ve thought he was facing two different units.
But while the enemy was resolute, the Pakistani soldiers were surging with high morale, in an invincible state.
The Pakistani soldiers, knowing reinforcements had arrived, were even fiercer than their adversaries.
Gao Yuan wanted to employ some kind of tactic, but the Pakistani reserves had already began their counteroffensive relentlessly.
When the first Al-Khalid tank charged into a crowd of Indians, opening fire with its machine gun and rolling towards the thickest part of the crowd, this short but intense fight essentially entered its final stage.
What Gao Yuan needed to do was lead a company of soldiers, with Chen Wei’s help as a translator, quickly across the road littered with Indian remnants and join forces with Panxin as soon as possible.
And it had to be done before dawn.
After daybreak, if India discovered that only two Shenzhou People were chasing after them, it was hard to say what might happen.
So, Gao Yuan got into a vehicle, placed the Da Hong Third Company flag at the front, and honked his way through the many Indian soldiers waiting to surrender.
This company was an infantry unit, but the Pakistani Army had mobilized all available vehicles to transport everyone to India’s rear. As long as they joined forces with India, surrender was inevitable, whether India liked it or not.
Gao Yuan really wanted to show himself, but due to the need to pass through many heavily armed Indian soldiers, risking being shot by a sniper, Chen Wei adamantly insisted that Gao Yuan stay in the armored vehicle while Chen Wei exposed himself and did the shouting.
"Clear the way! Everyone move aside, put your guns on the ground, hands on your heads. We are the Shenzhou Army, we guarantee the safety of captives. If anyone dares to resist, we will show no mercy and shoot to kill."
The vehicle’s headlights were on, the Da Hong Third Company flag was affixed at the front, Chen Wei held a megaphone in one hand and the windshield in the other, standing on an open-top jeep, making a bold statement.
"We’re here, where are you?"
Finally crossing through the Indian camp, Gao Yuan started calling on the radio, and then Panxin and Li Jingang appeared on the highway.
Chen Wei jumped off the vehicle.
Pansin and Li Jingang immediately saluted and loudly said, "Good to see you, officer."
"We’ve been looking forward to your arrival!"
Chen Wei returned the salute to both of them, then, excitedly shook hands with Panxin, but while holding hands, he just went ahead and hugged Panxin.
"We’ve been waiting for you, really... really..."
Chen Wei was close to tears, his face expressing a wealth of unspeakable feelings. After letting go of Panxin, he turned and shook hands with Li Jingang, saying, "I thought I would never make it back in this lifetime, thought I’d never see our people again, but to think, you really made it!
Gao Yuan jumped down from the armored vehicle behind and said urgently, "Don’t stand around talking, let’s go take charge of the prisoners. The situation in the rear is still uncertain."
Chen Wei said urgently, "Okay, okay, are there any more captives behind?"
"Yes, there are probably two generals, dozens of staff officers, the number of junior officers has not been tallied, and additionally, there are dozens of key members who are ’sanitation workers.’ It was these people who bewitched and controlled the entire army."
Chen Wei was stunned for a moment, and then said, "What?"
They had left in such a hurry earlier; who has time to mention that there was a bunch of captives already captured behind them? As for discussing the ranks of the captives, there was even less time for that.
Chen Wei was extremely astonished and said, "Did you guys take down the ’sanitation workers’’ headquarters or what? How come the rank of the captives is so high?"
Panxin said, "We really did take down the ’sanitation workers’’ headquarters. Let’s hurry up and go; it’s almost dawn, and it’s going to be troublesome once daylight breaks."
"Come over here, all of you get on this vehicle. You guys need to tell me what’s going on."
Chen Wei returned to the jeep once more, then had a few Pakistani guards switch to another vehicle. Once the driver started driving again, Chen Wei asked urgently, "How did you guys get here? Does the homeland know about the situation here?"
Panxin and Gao Yuan exchanged a glance, then he whispered, "About that, you have to ask our captain. Sir, there are some things we’re not at liberty to discuss."
Chen Wei was taken aback for a moment, then he nodded and said, "Then let’s not talk about it for now, let’s not talk about it."
Gao Yuan hesitated for a moment, and finally whispered to Li Jingang, "What rank is this officer?"
Chen Wei was wearing a military uniform, but his uniform did not have any shoulder boards or collar patches, so Gao Yuan truly did not know Chen Wei’s rank.
Li Jingang whispered, "Overseas military officers are at least colonels, and if higher, they are major generals, so calling him ’sir’ is definitely correct. As for this ’sir,’ I guess he is a major general."
Chen Wei overheard Gao Yuan’s conversation and turned around to say, "I was too excited and forgot to introduce myself. My name is Chen Wei, I hold the rank of major general and have been serving as the military attaché in Pakistan for two and a half years now. You guys should introduce yourselves as well."
Panxin immediately said, "Reporting to the sir, I’m called Mr. Jian’er, his codename is Mr. Hao, and this person is our captain, codenamed Nemesis."
Panxin reported their codenames instead of their real names, and he didn’t report their military ranks, so Gao Yuan knew what he was supposed to say.
Chen Wei was very curious and said, "He is the captain, huh? Impressive, very impressive, young and promising."
Chen Wei also understood the meaning behind Panxin’s response, so he didn’t ask any substantial questions but simply laughed and said, "Seeing you guys makes me feel much more at ease. Let’s talk more once things settle down, now is just not the time."
It wasn’t about guarding against someone, like the Pakistani driver, but it was even uncertain if Chen Wei was permitted to know about Spark Squad’s mission. If Zhao Qiang hadn’t died, he would decide whether or not to tell Chen Wei, but now that Zhao Qiang was dead, it was up to Gao Yuan to choose whether or not to reveal the truth to Chen Wei.
Panxin handled this principle of confidentiality very appropriately.
The vehicle quickly arrived at the location of the recent attack, and by then, the sky had already started to brighten.
Any stragglers encountered on the road were ignored, as the Pakistani Army naturally had units following to take care of the prisoners. The priority now was to meet up with Yu Shunzhou and his men.
After communications via radio, Gao Yuan and his men, leading over a hundred fully armed Pakistani soldiers, met up with Yu Shunzhou, and what Chen Wei saw was the village entrance’s clearing filled with seated captives.
Three men, two guns, one flamethrower, with Yu Shunzhou and Nie Erlong standing on either side of Liu Chunxiao, who was aiming the flamethrower at the captives on the ground in front of him, the captives each looking at Liu Chunxiao with trembling fear.
This was the scene the Pakistani soldiers encountered.
The leading Pakistani officer was thrilled; he couldn’t believe what he was seeing as he moved closer to the captives to identify their identities and ranks, and then he quickly became agitated and started shouting at the captives. Following the officer’s angry blow with the butt of his gun on one of the ’sanitation workers’ in civilian clothes, the operation to take charge of the prisoners was considered complete.
After the Pakistani colonel finished speaking excitedly and spitting while talking to Chen Wei, Chen Wei laughed and said, "He’s asking, how did you pull it off? It’s incredible. You’ve captured the entire high command of the enemy’s Second Army; it was just a few of you? That’s unbelievable, something along those lines, right?"
Gao Yuan laughed and said, "We did it in a bit of a blur."
Panxin thought for a moment and said, "Really, don’t know how it was done, but somehow, in a blur, we won and caught a whole bunch of prisoners."
Chen Wei laughed and said, "You can’t say it like that... you need to say something that boosts morale."
Chen Wei turned to the Pakistani officer and said a few words, after which the officer became even more excited.
"I told them you are the vanguard of the main force, and during scouting, you found the opportunity and took down the enemy’s command post just like that."
After finishing his statement with a chuckle, Chen Wei said, "It’s not that I want to deceive them, but the Pakistani Army really needs a victory to boost morale right now. Your arrival is like a shot in the arm, and moreover, after the encirclement on the eastern front was broken, the whole strategical disadvantage was reversed instantly. It’s really hard for me to believe that this war would be turned around in this way."
Having spoken, Chen Wei looked at Gao Yuan and then sighed again, "Incredible, this is definitely a miracle in the history of warfare. As a soldier of the Shenzhou Army, as a Shenzhou person, I’m proud of the miracle you created and proud of you. You’ve really given me quite the vindication!"
