Chapter 249: Chapter 244 Don’t Look Back

The spaceship behind them was getting farther and farther away, as were the armored beasts that had fallen from it, but the spaceship hovering over the city was getting closer and closer.

The road, the only one, was now completely blocked.

Gao Yuan didn’t have the confidence to rush through the dense attacks of armored beasts and insects as thick as black fog, so he thought of returning to Dushanbe City District, for there were buildings. Where there were buildings, he could temporarily hide, evade, and if there was an enclosed room or something, he should be able to escape the insects’ attacks.

So entering the city district meant opportunity. Gao Yuan had entered cities infested with zombies several times, but now, he was merely entering a city about to be infested with zombies.

But exposed to numerous armored beasts and unknown insects, Gao Yuan really wasn’t confident he could ensure his safety and that of Xinghe’s.

Yes, entering the city district, Gao Yuan only had a fifty percent chance of protecting himself, and with Xinghe, his odds dropped to thirty percent.

As for others, Gao Yuan could not protect them.

Zhao Qiang grabbed Gao Yuan’s arm and said in a low voice, "Keep Xinghe safe, keep Revelation safe, and save your life. If the situation is critical, remember to take Revelation with you when you leave."

"I know."

Gao Yuan took a deep breath and then started looking back.

The armored beasts were running at full speed, and when they did, their speed was terrifyingly fast. The off-road vehicle had reached a speed of eighty kilometers per hour, but the distance between the armored beasts and Gao Yuan’s group was still shrinking.

"Faster!"

The vehicle’s speed increased to one hundred kilometers per hour, and the distance from the armored beasts stabilized. When the speed reached one hundred and thirty kilometers per hour, the armored beasts seemed to be gradually falling behind.

"Sharp turn ahead! Slow down!"

Panxin suddenly slammed on the brakes because he remembered the road he had just traveled very clearly, there was a sharp turn ahead, and if they didn’t slow down, the car would certainly flip over.

That deceleration immediately allowed the pursuing armored beasts to close the distance.

But from here, the car could no longer speed up because there were already evacuating civilians on the road and vehicles moving, even horse-drawn carriages, though not in large numbers but moving very slowly, forcing the two vehicles to slow down as well.

Now Gao Yuan and his group were on the north side of Dushanbe, heading south into the city district, or if they continued east, they would be driving onto Tajikistan’s highest-class highway, which went east into the mountains and continued all the way up to the Pamir Plateau.

Heading south into the city district, east into the mountainous area, but there was a problem: it was easy to get into the mountain area, but it would be difficult to leave because there was only one road.

Honking incessantly, Zhao Qiang stuck his head out the window and yelled at the already panicked evacuees, "Move aside! Don’t go forward, run to the sides, run to the sides!"

The spaceship had already descended, how could the fleeing crowd not panic?

But it was too late for words, and Panxin really couldn’t drive the car into the crowd.

"What do we do?"

"Keep driving forward!"

Glancing back, Zhao Qiang urged urgently, "We can’t worry about that now, look ahead. If we stay here, we’ll be caught up before we even reach the city district!"

The armored beasts weren’t specifically chasing Gao Yuan and the others; they were headed for Dushanbe City District. And at this moment, a small portion of the defending army finally opened fire.

Rockets, machine guns, any available weapon was fired at the armored beasts, and once attacked, the armored beasts no longer pursued Gao Yuan and their vehicle.

The imminent crisis was resolved in such a manner.

Civilians who had seen the armored beasts began to throw away anything that would slow them down, leaving the highway and running towards the wilderness to the north.

It was the right choice, as the armored beasts’ primary and most interesting prey was in the city district.

"I understand now! I understand..."

Gao Yuan suddenly muttered to himself, then said with a feeling of realization, "I finally know the Serpent People’s purpose!"

The car never stopped, just slowed down considerably, but now Panxin no longer had any reservations. He accelerated and rammed into a small sedan blocking the way, knocking it aside, then the off-road vehicle only slowed down slightly before accelerating again and driving past.

The car swayed back and forth as it maneuvered around obstacles, and it could only advance at a speed of forty to fifty kilometers per hour, but there was no need to worry about hitting people, as any sensible person had already run off by this time.

As Gao Yuan swayed, he pointed towards Dushanbe and said in a low voice, "This city is the Serpent People’s breeding ground for weapons. They want to do more than just test weapons; they want to manufacture them. All they need to do is throw monsters here and let them breed on their own."

Zhao Qiang’s face turned livid, Gao Yuan leaned low to one side and murmured, "Look, the spaceship above the city has begun dropping monsters as well."

Puffs of black smoke appeared from the bottom of the spaceship, then moved across the air at a not-so-fast pace.

It looked like flocks of starlings or a swarm of red-billed queleas over the African savannah.

"Don’t enter the city district, take the highway east, if... there are no obstructions ahead!"

Returning to the city district was Gao Yuan’s decision, because Armored Beasts and unknown small creatures had appeared on the road ahead, and now, not entering the city district was still Gao Yuan’s decision; he thought that since they could still move forward, they should keep going until they couldn’t anymore.

Gao Yuan was not a genius who thinks three steps ahead with each step he took; he simply turned back when he saw a blockade ahead, and decided to move forward when he saw monsters in the city district. On this point, he was just an ordinary person making an ordinary decision.

Yet, Zhao Qiang and the others did not object to Gao Yuan’s decision, because no one knew what to do or where to go.

However, when it came to monsters, Gao Yuan had a more acute intuition than others, made judgments faster, and he also seemed to always be the first to understand the Serpent People’s intentions.

The vehicle kept moving forward, fast at times and slow at others, but it never stopped, and the black fog dropped by the airship became invisible once it fell into the city.

"Take the back roads, don’t go into the city district!"

Gao Yuan and his group were traveling along the edge of Dushanbe, and a large part of the M41 Highway they needed to take passed through the city district. Now, their only choice was to avoid the main road and take the back roads, merely hoping to get through.

As long as one ignored the airship that always hovered above the city, there would be no danger to Gao Yuan and his group.

They traveled along the edge of Dushanbe and passed through most of the city district without encountering monsters, only crowds that frequently blocked the road. But after a short wait, those crowds would disperse, so their speed was only slightly reduced.

"Look over there!"

Gao Yuan turned his head as Li Jingang, clutching his gun, pointed to the right front and shouted loudly, "What is that..."

About a dozen people were running fast, but soon they started gesticulating wildly, desperately waving and swatting at something. Some people stopped, others continued running while slapping themselves, but within seconds, no matter whether they had stopped or kept running, they all froze.

As the vehicle moved forward, the group of people on the right had reached the direct right side, but the distance was too great to make out what had attacked them.

There was only one explanation: the creatures were so small that they couldn’t be seen from a distance.

"Close the windows!"

Zhao Qiang suddenly shouted, and instantly all four windows were shut. At the same time, Li Jingang picked up the walkie-talkie and screamed, "The ones behind! Hurry up and block all the gaps! Seal them!"

Unable to maintain radio silence anymore, Li Jingang used the radio to instruct those behind on what to do, because he feared those sitting in the truck bed couldn’t see what was happening outside.

"We sealed them early on!"

The reply came from Yu Shunzhou through the walkie-talkie, his tone calm, "All gaps are sealed. Don’t worry about us."

Zhao Qiang was taken aback for a moment, then he muttered softly, "Good job."

Gao Yuan looked to the right, confidently stating, "As a survivalist, Yu Shunzhou wouldn’t wait for a crisis to come upon us to recognize it."

Zhao Qiang didn’t say anything, and Gao Yuan continued, "Now we just hope the insects can’t break through the glass..."

Before he could finish, there was a snap, and the corpse of an insect appeared on the glass. Then, like the start of a rainstorm, the windshield began to crackle.

The smashed bodies of the insects didn’t allow for their shape to be identified, what remained on the glass was a greenish liquid, though occasionally streaked with red.

Pangxin turned on the windshield wipers, and as the insect corpses were scraped away, he murmured softly, "These damned things suck blood!"

The car quickly left the range of the swarm, the tapping noise lasted a few seconds, but the windshield was covered with insect corpses, illustrating their density.

"They’re about the size of cockroaches..."

Gao Yuan remarked, to which Zhao Qiang immediately said, "What kind of cockroach? Southern or northern? Be specific."

Gao Yuan paused for a second and then said, "Like... like dung beetles."

Gao Yuan tried to name an insect to accurately describe the size, but in the end, he settled on dung beetles since he wasn’t an entomologist and that was the only creature of a similar size he could think of.

The vehicle was still moving forward; every meter they traveled was a meter closer to safety. With a jolt, the car was back on the M41 Highway.

It looked like they could indeed leave Dushanbe by heading east, and the chances seemed good, especially since there was no Serpent People’s airship blocking the way ahead, nor any electromagnetic attacks—increasing their hope of escape.

But just then, a few sizzling electric sounds suddenly emanated from inside the speeding car. Li Jingang yelled as he took off his headset, and his walkie-talkie even sparked.

The car was rapidly slowing down, getting slower and slower.

"Electromagnetic Pulse! The engine’s cut out!"

Prototype tried turning the ignition key several times, then he declared loudly, "Won’t start! Prepare to abandon the car!"

So in the end, the car was no longer usable.

Zhao Qiang let out a soft sigh, then he whispered to Gao Yuan, "After getting out of the car, go to the back and get Revelation from Li Yang, then carry Xinghe and run. Don’t look back."
