The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse

Chapter 210: Chapter 207: Do Me a Favor

Now, Gao Yuan was the only one who could restrain the monster.

In terms of strength and speed, Gao Yuan was even superior to the monster. Coupled with the monster’s monotonous attack patterns, Gao Yuan could completely overpower it.

The speed of exterminating the monster was merely a matter of how quickly Gao Yuan could get to its side.

However, others couldn’t just stand by idly, waiting for Gao Yuan to deal with the monster, so all kinds of methods were being employed. Many things only required finding the correct approach or a way to solve the problem. Once they discovered the monster’s weakness was underneath its belly, there was a method to deal with it.

It was just a bit slower than Gao Yuan, and less efficient.

A warrior held a grenade in his hand and waited for the monster to get close. Instead of throwing it directly, after several failed attempts, everyone knew grenades were effective but difficult to use.

He didn’t throw the grenade but instead lunged onto the monster as it passed by, grabbing the edge of its carapace firmly with his left hand, placing the grenade under its belly with his right hand, and then, as the monster suddenly braked hard, he was thrown off, but the grenade under its belly exploded.

It was a success; the monster was blown up, the first one to be successfully killed apart from Gao Yuan.

Cheers erupted from those nearby.

Indeed, the monster was strong, fast, and had sharp teeth, but humans never feared any beast because they knew that with a little ingenuity, a solution could always be found.

Gao Yuan leapt into mid-air and landed, his Steel Mace crashing down on the monster’s carapace. The blow made his hands tingle with numbness, and the monster’s speed immediately slowed down. But because the hit was not solid, the monster continued to charge forward. So, Gao Yuan hurriedly took two more steps and struck down with his mace, killing the monster outright.

"Move aside!"

With a roaring shout, a fire dragon burst forth from the crowd, a hundred meters long, spraying directly onto a monster, turning it into a fireball.

The monster was ablaze but kept running forward, startling Gao Yuan. The last thing they needed was for the monster to run around with fire, which could ignite a massive blaze and cause trouble.

Thankfully, after running less than ten meters, the monster fell headlong to the ground and slowly began to burn.

At last, there was an effective weapon, the Flamethrower.

"Anti-Chemical Battalion, follow me! Watch your firing lines, and absolutely avoid friendly fire!"

The flamethrower worked incredibly well, but there was one problem: potential collateral damage. This was inside the camp, not an empty wilderness. If you wanted to burn the monster, you had to ensure you didn’t burn your own people first.

"Directional Mine! Clear out!"

With a thunderous blast, a newly-placed directional mine was detonated manually, and even exploding in the face of the monster, the mine didn’t blow it apart. The monster was blasted several meters back, but it was apparent that it was dead before it even hit the ground.

No matter the method, as long as it killed the monsters it worked. And each time an attempt succeeded, that meant one less monster. The fewer the monsters, the easier they were to deal with.

But the bulk of the work was still being done by Gao Yuan.

Running over, catching up, or intercepting them, then a blow of his mace to the head, whether he hit the brain or not, the monster was surely dead.

Wherever Gao Yuan went, problems were quickly solved. While other warriors racked their brains to fight the monsters, Gao Yuan had already finished the job before them and then drifted away.

"Who was that just now?"

"Gao Yuan, I guess?"

"Didn’t see clearly, is he even human?"

"Quit the chatter, and support!"

Conversations like this happened often. Those familiar with Gao Yuan, such as Li Jingang and his special forces brigade, were used to it, but those who didn’t know him, like the warriors from the other two special forces brigades, would let out bursts of amazement.

"Thirty-one."

"Thirty-two."

"Thirty-three!"

"Thirty-four, thirty-five."

After killing two monsters in rapid succession, Gao Yuan stopped to catch his breath and look around. However, he could no longer see any trace of monsters.

Another round of cheering ensued, then someone shouted, "It’s dead, it’s dead, find the next one!"

The camp suddenly fell quiet; gunfire ceased, and there were no more explosions. Gao Yuan stood in place, looking around, and shouted, "Is there anyone left? Any more monsters?"

After a good while, someone uncertainly said, "Are they gone? They’re gone, right?"

Another moment later, someone suddenly shouted, "They’re gone! We’ve won!"

There was a brief but fervent cheer which quickly subsided, soon followed by someone else shouting, "Quick, tally the number of monsters, confirm if they have all been killed, check on the wounded, isolate the injured for now, regroup the troop, and prepare for the enemy’s next assault, move! Get moving."

The disorganized formation swiftly reassembled, but this time it was different; after the trial by the monsters, their new formation was clearly meant to confront them.

Soon, Liu Muyang hurried over to Gao Yuan’s side. He patted Gao Yuan on the shoulder, loudly saying, "Well done!"

Without Gao Yuan, these monsters would surely have been wiped out as well, but without him, the casualties would have increased several-fold, because Gao Yuan’s speed and efficiency in killing monsters greatly relieved the pressure on everyone else.

But Gao Yuan was now concerned about only one thing, which was that the creatures deployed by the Serpent People would inevitably carry the deadly rabies virus.

Indeed, before Gao Yuan had a chance to voice his concerns, a medic ran up to Liu Muyang.

"Commander, all the injured have been infected, they... they are mutating quickly."

Liu Muyang’s expression hardly changed; he seemed petrified, like he had turned into a statue.

"According to... how many are wounded?"

"Twenty-seven have been injured through direct contact with the monsters, others who are injured due to different reasons might be safe, but need to be observed further."

Liu Muyang turned to look at Gao Yuan, his voice grave, "Leave this place, go find Xinghe."

Gao Yuan didn’t move, and Liu Muyang whispered, "Do you have a way? If not, walk away."

Gao Yuan turned and walked away. He took a few bewildered steps, then saw the soldier who had just jumped on the back of a monster, placing a grenade underneath its stomach.

It was a special forces member, who was now standing alone, maintaining a distance of ten meters from his comrades, constantly dripping blood from his left hand, which he held up for inspection.

"Damn, this is troublesome. I thought I was going to go out in a blaze of glory just now, but it turns out I’m fine, fine then. Damn it, I’m injured, you all stay back, keep your distance from me."

The soldier looked very annoyed, while among his comrades encircling him some quietly said, "Bottle, don’t move, let the medic check you first, you might be okay..."

The soldier nicknamed Bottle grimly laughed and said, "I’ve got a feeling I’m hit, that’ll do, I suppose it’s worth it. Turn around, and hurry up."

Gao Yuan halted his steps, looked at the soldier from a distance; the soldier also saw Gao Yuan. He raised his right hand and waved to Gao Yuan, shouting, "You! I know you! Good job!"

After speaking, the soldier with the bleeding left hand smiled, placed his hand on the pistol at his waist, and shouted loudly, "Bros, did you not come prepared? Are you ready now? If you’re ready, turn around. If you watch me, I won’t be able to do it. Hurry up, I don’t want to become ’that thing’ and make you do it, avoiding the burden of remembering me later. Please, I’m begging you, make it easy for me."

Finally, one person turned around; after turning his head, he made eye contact with Gao Yuan, then quickly dropped his gaze and hurriedly covered his face with his hands.

Then the second, third, and at last, more than a dozen soldiers all turned away.

Some looked somber, others clenched their teeth in anger, while yet others stood ramrod straight with tears streaming down their faces, yet they didn’t move an inch.

Bottle drew his pistol, racked the slide, then looked at Gao Yuan and said, "Buddy, do me a favor, turn around."

Gao Yuan nodded, gave the soldier a salute, but as he turned his head, he instinctively looked up at the sky, then he immediately raised his hand and yelled, "The aliens are gone! They’ve left! We’ve won!"

Bottle, who had already raised the pistol, looked up and noticed that the three ships which had been hovering above the camp had vanished, completely out of sight.

"We won, huh, it was worth it, worth it!"

Bottle’s body swayed, he wasn’t too injured, but he could no longer stand steadily.

"Buddy, turn your head."

Gao Yuan turned away, then heard a gunshot behind him.

The gun sounded.

Gao Yuan let out a long sigh, didn’t turn back, and continued walking forward, only he didn’t know where to go.
