Chapter 209: Chapter 206 Close Combat is King
The grenade had a short range, limited power, and a long reaction time. In this battle, where the leading roles should have been played by aerial bombs, artillery shells, and anti-aircraft guns, there was no place for hand grenades.
The key issue was that the small monsters were constantly moving. By the time a grenade was thrown, the monster would have already run off.
Attempting to predict their movements and toss a grenade right beneath their bellies was easier said than done, and even more difficult to achieve in practice.
Thus, while a method to counter the small monsters had been found, the execution was too demanding, rendering the effect almost nil.
The anti-aircraft gun had sufficient power, but the small monsters moved too quickly and were too small. Moreover, most of them were in the crowd now, and no matter how powerful the anti-aircraft or machine guns were, one dared not fire into the crowd.
So, aside from Gao Yuan who had killed two small monsters with his knife and steel mace, the rest of the monsters deployed by the Serpent People were still in good shape.
Several grenades had exploded in succession, but none had managed to injure the monsters. What to do in such a situation? Of course, it was time to look to Gao Yuan.
"Hand grenades!"
Gao Yuan shouted, but the people around him lacked coordination with him. He only shouted "hand grenades," but who knew whether he was asking for hand grenades or warning that a grenade was about to explode for safety.
Gao Yuan called out urgently again, "Give me hand grenades!"
Gao Yuan, who had just been eating, was unlikely to be fully armed, and when he received the notice about the zombies, he truly hadn’t intended to fight using hand grenades.
Just then, a hand holding two grenades appeared in front of Gao Yuan.
Nie Erlong, with a rifle in one hand, held up two hand grenades to Gao Yuan with the other, and then said hurriedly, "Here you go."
Gao Yuan had a knife in his left hand and a steel mace in the right, how could he take the grenades?
Dual-wielding weapons seemed cool, but it turned out to be quite inconvenient in actual combat. Gao Yuan placed the knife on the ground and took the two grenades, then set the steel mace on the ground. Clenching his legs, he grasped a grenade in his left hand, pulled the pin with his index finger, and then the right hand’s grenade was ready to be thrown.
The fuses of the grenades varied in timing, ranging from three to six seconds. This was originally due to manufacturing issues leading to inconsistent explosion timings, but now it was a matter of how the grenades were configured. Generally, the detonation timing of grenades from the same batch could be controlled to be consistent.
The grenades Gao Yuan used and those Nie Erlong held were from the same batch; after pulling the pin, they would explode after four seconds.
One should not underestimate the difference of a second or two. It might not matter to others whether it was a second early or late, but Gao Yuan needed to toss the grenade right under the belly of the monster. If the explosion timing was off by a second, the monster could have run far away.
Estimating the distance, calculating the timing, then accurately determining the monster’s location, and accurately throwing the grenade beneath the monster’s belly.
Gao Yuan did not consider the difficulty of these steps at all. He simply glanced, then released his hand, waiting for two seconds with the grenade in his hand before throwing it forcefully.
The control over timing and distance had been refined to its peak. The only problem was the uncontrollable timing of the grenade’s detonation. Even a few milliseconds off could result in a vastly different outcome.
The grenade fell to the ground, the small monster pounced toward a machine gunner who was firing, and then, just as the monster passed right over the grenade, it exploded.
The grenade had not exploded right beneath the monster, but it grazed the edge. The blast wave flipped the monster into the air, and when it landed, its belly was facing upwards.
The machine gunner fired a stream of bullets into the belly of the monster.
Meanwhile, Gao Yuan had set his sights on another monster, pulled the pin, and with a toss of his hand, the grenade traveled over forty meters before landing on the ground.
It was a misfire, the monster had veered off the path Gao Yuan thought it would take, but some things just happen to work out. Gao Yuan thought the grenade was a miss, yet the monster turned back, and, unfortunately, ran right over it.
With a boom, the monster was hurled into the air, ascending four or five meters before landing flatly, and by the time it hit the ground, it was already dead as a doornail.
This really was like a blind cat running into a dead rat, a stroke of luck unbelievable.
Gao Yuan decided not to throw any more grenades, their success rate was too low, so he picked up the steel mace from the ground and sprinted toward the nearest monster.
Gao Yuan pushed his speed to the limit, charging directly toward a squad of the Expeditionary Army. The formation was now in disarray due to the monsters, creating a chaotic situation.
Gao Yuan reached the monster and blocked its path, then with a swing, brought the mace crashing down onto its head.
A loud clang was met with the monster immediately falling, its four legs twitching a few times on the ground before going still.
Indeed, for breaking armor, blunt weapons are necessary, and engaging these monsters in melee combat is the best strategy. Using grenades is just a waste of time.
Gao Yuan turned around to find the next monster, as the Serpent People had released dozens of them; there was plenty to keep busy.
When Gao Yuan turned towards the next monster, he caught sight of Lizhizi holding a treasured sword, shouting and gesturing wildly.
"Aim for the legs, the legs! Ah!"
Lizhizi suddenly dropped to the ground in a beautiful posture, thrusting the treasured sword close to his body, and upon contact with the monster’s leg, a faint crack could be heard as his treasured sword broke in two.
Lizhizi sat up from the ground, slapped the ground, and yelled, "Cut its legs, aim lower! Oh no, my sword, this is not good!"
The monster charged past, then immediately turned and charged back.
The monster’s vengeful instincts seemed strong, as it appeared determined to either trample or bite Lizhizi to death, the one who had just tripped it.
Each Expeditionary Army soldier was armed with a knife, and hearing Lizhizi’s loud cries along with his performance, many were jolted awake. They discarded their guns for knives, and those flanking the monster on both sides reached out with their blades toward its legs.
There was no need to chop, nor was chopping feasible, as the monster’s low stance made it difficult to cut, but placing the blade on the ground and waiting for the monster to collide with it worked just fine.
Amid a cacophony of clattering sounds, the monster reached Lizhizi, who promptly stood up with a carp flip and once again leaped high, miraculously avoiding the monster’s gaping maw in midair.
Gao Yuan finally arrived, just as the monster turned its head to bite Lizhizi, but its body continued to rush forward. With a mace swung overhead, he splattered the monster’s head with a splat.
Gao Yuan didn’t stop, swept past like the wind, and as Lizhizi landed, he turned to look at the now headless monster and shouted, "Don’t just hold the blade in your hand, why not brace it against the ground? Holding it, you can’t sever its legs, they are too hard. Oh my, my sword!"
