Chapter 98: 98. Visiting (Part 1)
"I encountered something on the way here and arrived late, sorry, did I keep you waiting for a long time?" Outside the school gate, Shen Junyu stood by his car and, upon seeing the three girls emerging, said with a smile.
Yu Xiaoxuan, upon seeing her idol at this moment, had already cast aside the nervousness she had felt in the dormitory. Her face flushed red, "No, we’ve also only just got up not long ago."
Fang Tong rolled her eyes secretly, finding her friend lacking backbone.
However, she never anticipated that this small act would be noticed by Shen Junyu. A flicker of a smile crossed his eyes as he opened the rear door of the car, "Please get in."
The gentlemanly tone, coupled with the gentlemanly gesture, set Yu Xiaoxuan’s heart fluttering like a little deer. He truly was her idol, a perfect gentleman.
Shen Qinglan got into the front passenger seat. Shen Junyu had just gotten into the car when he handed Shen Qinglan a bag, "This was specially made by Sister-in-law Song this morning, afraid that you hadn’t eaten."
"You’re late, we’ve already eaten." Shen Qinglan said expressionlessly.
Shen Junyu sighed helplessly, "Then treat it as a snack."
"You’re not planning on letting us eat lunch?" Shen Qinglan asked.
Shen Junyu stiffened his hand, took the bag back, and casually put it aside, rubbing Shen Qinglan’s hair, "You little girl are really becoming more heartless."
Shen Qinglan kept an impassive face. Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan watched the siblings interact, envy flickering in their eyes. Both were only children and never felt the lack, but now, witnessing the Shen siblings’ interaction, they suddenly thought having a brother wouldn’t be too bad.
The courtyard was some distance from their school, and because of traffic congestion, it was two and a half hours later when they arrived at the entrance of the courtyard.
Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan dared not speak at first, but Shen Junyu was humorous and good at conversing, which soon put Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan at ease.
However, just as they arrived at the entrance of the courtyard, Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan immediately chickened out. Imagining it was one thing, facing reality was another.
Shen Junyu stopped the car, lowered the window, and the guard at the gate saluted Shen Junyu, allowing him to pass directly.
"Weren’t we supposed to register our identities? I even took out my ID card." Yu Xiaoxuan said, a little perplexed, holding her ID card.
"With me bringing you in, naturally it’s not necessary." Shen Junyu said with a smile.
Shen Qinglan had started to close her eyes and rest halfway through the journey. She’d returned late last night and had several dreams, all featuring Fu Hengyi, waking her up many times, so she felt sleepy this morning.
All the way, Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan looked out the window. The courtyard had excellent greenery, with tall trees easily spotted, and although it was deep autumn with many leaves already fallen, it still seemed lush with greenery in parts.
Another ten minutes’ drive, and they stopped in front of a three-story Western-style building.
"We’re here." Shen Junyu parked the car and announced.
Shen Qinglan had already gotten out first, and Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan followed suit, looking up at the building with its distinct historical charm, the nervousness they had just calmed reignited.
"Qinglan, Jun Yu, you’re back." A woman in a cheongsam greeted them with a smile. First, she greeted the siblings, then turned her attention to Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan, "These must be Qinglan’s classmates. Come in, please."
"This is my mom." Shen Qinglan introduced.
Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan greeted her with a "Hello, Auntie." Chu Yunrong was even younger and more beautiful than they had seen on TV.
"What beautiful children." Chu Yunrong said with affection.
Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan smiled bashfully, feeling they were not as beautiful compared to Shen Qinglan.
"Your grandfather has been waiting for you for quite a while now." Chu Yunrong mentioned to Shen Qinglan in a tone that was more statement than reprimand.
"We were delayed by traffic." Shen Qinglan replied calmly.
Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan felt a little guilty. If it were not for their insistence on getting out of the car to buy gifts on the way, they would have arrived an hour earlier.
Knowing how congested Beijing’s traffic could be, Chu Yunrong didn’t remark further.
"Qinglan, we should take off our shoes first, shouldn’t we?" Yu Xiaoxuan suggested tentatively at the entrance.
"No need to take off your shoes, just come in." Chu Yunrong gestured dismissively.
Shen Qinglan didn’t say a word but walked in with her shoes on, followed by Shen Junyu, who abandoned the idea of changing his shoes with a smile in his eyes, "We don’t need to change shoes in our house, come on in."
Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan, seeing that the hosts themselves were not changing shoes, confidently walked in.
Chu Yunrong paused for a moment, surprised. It was her first time seeing how Shen Qinglan interacted with friends, and she realized that her daughter was such a considerate child. It seemed... she didn’t understand her daughter.
With a slight sigh in her heart and recalling what her husband had said before going to the army, she truly needed to understand her daughter better.
"Grandpa, I’m back." Shen Qinglan entered the living room and greeted the Old Sir Shen seated there.
"That’s good, invite your friends to sit down. Why are you all standing?" Old Sir Shen had a smile on his serious face, obviously in good spirits.
Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan stood to the side, quite restrained. Yu Xiaoxuan’s hands twisted together nervously, and although Fang Tong seemed calmer than Yu Xiaoxuan, her constantly blinking eyes betrayed her inner tension.
"Grandpa, this is Fang Tong, this is Yu Xiaoxuan, both are my friends. This is my grandpa."
"Shen... Good day, Grandpa." Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan said nervously.
"Grandpa, you’ve scared the girls," Shen Junyu said with a laugh.
Old Sir Shen glared, "Do I look so terrible that I would scare them?"
"No, not at all, Grandpa Shen looks very kind. We’ve only ever seen you on TV before, and now we’re finally meeting you in person, so we’re just nervous." Fang Tong spoke with a blushing face.
Old Sir Shen laughed, "Hehe, young lady, don’t be nervous; I’m just Lanlan’s grandpa, nobody else."
"Exactly, don’t be nervous. Here, have some juice." Chu Yunrong brought over some juice.
Yu Xiaoxuan and Fang Tong promptly stood up and took the juice with both hands, "Thank you, Auntie."
Shen Qinglan received a cup of tea instead, "Thanks, Mom."
Old Sir Shen and Chu Yunrong could tell that both Fang Tong and Yu Xiaoxuan had good upbringing. Besides an initial glance out of curiosity upon entering, their eyes didn’t wander around the Shen residence.
The couple were pleased; although they hoped Shen Qinglan would socialize more with friends, they also hoped her friends would be good people. It seemed that Shen Qinglan had an excellent eye for choosing friends.
