"Honestly, why be so smart? It’s so hard to give you a surprise." Yu Xiaoxuan pouted.

Shen Qinglan chuckled, "My fault, to make amends and to celebrate, I’ll take you out for dinner tonight. Order whatever you like, it’s my treat."

Yu Xiaoxuan’s eyes lit up, "Really?"

Shen Qinglan gave her an affirmative nod.

"Then I want a feast, a luxurious feast."

"All right."

"I’ll pick the place."

"Sure."

"Hooray, then let’s go."

After walking for a while, Yu Xiaoxuan started telling Shen Qinglan about her nervousness during the performance, "Qinglan, you have no idea. There were five judges in there, and when I walked in, they all stared at me. I was so nervous, I almost couldn’t speak clearly. I had to remember your words at the crucial moment and calm down, or I might not have even passed the first round."

"It’s good you passed smoothly. Did they say when the next round is?" Shen Qinglan inquired.

"Next Saturday. They want us to perform again. Qinglan, what should I do this time? Sing, dance, recite?"

The two walked and discussed, although Yu Xiaoxuan did most of the talking. Whenever she asked Shen Qinglan something, Shen Qinglan would give her opinion.

Although Yu Xiaoxuan said she wanted a feast, they ended up eating at a food stall. According to Yu Xiaoxuan, it’s too early to celebrate with a feast. She said when she actually gets selected, then they can have a feast, and she won’t hold back with Shen Qinglan.

In the following week, Yu Xiaoxuan was busy preparing for her performance. This time, she chose singing. Shen Qinglan knew nothing about singing, so she didn’t give any opinion.

That week, Shen Qinglan had her own matters to attend to. A few days ago, she received a call from Daniel, asking when she’d send the two paintings promised for the charity auction. Shen Qinglan then remembered what she had forgotten.

Although she had brought back some paintings from Hang City, she didn’t plan to sell them. Instead, she decided to paint two new ones.

One of them was already completed, and Shen Qinglan decided to paint a sunrise for the other.

Beijing had no high mountains, so there was no talk of high-altitude sunrises. But to the western suburbs, there were a series of rolling hills. Though the highest altitude was only about three hundred meters, it was enough for watching a sunrise.

The hills were a distance from Jiangxin Garden, so to avoid missing the sunrise, Shen Qinglan decided to leave that night and camp on the hilltop.

After packing the necessary things, Shen Qinglan set off. This time she didn’t take the sports car from the Shen Family but Fu Hengyi’s SUV, which he had left in the garage. Shen Qinglan simply took the key from his study.

As the car drove out of the city, the surroundings suddenly quieted. Though it was Beijing, places like beyond the Western City were at the border between rural and urban, with vast farmlands. At night, it was quiet here, unlike the city with its vibrant nightlife.

Suddenly, a loud bang came from ahead. Shen Qinglan stopped, pressing the brake. Though it was just one sound, Shen Qinglan was sure it was from a firearm being discharged. That familiar sound, Shen Qinglan, who had experienced its cold presence, would not mistake.

What happened ahead? Why was it here? Should she proceed? Shen Qinglan hesitated. She wasn’t afraid of trouble, but she didn’t seek it either.

While Shen Qinglan hesitated and was about to turn back, a beam of light shone on her face. She knew it was too late; she had been spotted.

"Who’s up there? Get out of the car." A man shouted from ahead, the light beam flicking over Shen Qinglan’s face.

Shen Qinglan looked through the light and saw quite a few people, about twenty or thirty. She thought she might still have time to run. Fu Hengyi’s car had good performance, full throttle would definitely get her away. But was the car bulletproof?

Here, Shen Qinglan was wildly speculating, without a trace of fear or tension on her face.

Over there, the shouting man was reporting to a man in his thirties. "Boss, the person in that car might have seen us fire. What should we do?"

The man, called "Boss," had a faint scar on his forehead, evidently recent. If Shen Qinglan were present, she would certainly recognize him as Shi Feng, the man she had saved.

Shi Feng slowly wiped the knife in his hand. On the ground lay a man covered in blood, motionless, life or death unknown. "Are you sure they saw us? If not, avoid causing trouble. It’s best if money can solve it. If not, then..."

Shi Feng paused. Though he left it unfinished, the man called Anan understood, a hint of ruthlessness flashing in his eyes.
