Chapter 319: 321. Fu Hengyi has gone missing (Part 41)
Beijing Fu Family.
Shen Qinglan woke up in the morning feeling utterly lethargic, and she just didn’t want to do anything. She sat on the sofa lazily after getting out of bed, holding a book in her hands but not turning a single page all morning.
Aunt Zhao was cleaning the house. Seeing her like that, she couldn’t help but laugh and say, "Are you missing Hengyi?"
Shen Qinglan snapped back to reality and met Aunt Zhao’s teasing gaze, giving an embarrassed smile. She had indeed been thinking about Fu Hengyi just now. Last night, she had a nightmare in which she saw Fu Hengyi stuck in a marsh, calling out her name, with nothing but a white expanse all around her, unable to see anything.
She called Fu Hengyi’s name, only able to hear his voice but unable to see him. She couldn’t even determine where the voice was coming from.
She could see Fu Hengyi sinking deeper into the marsh, consistently calling out her name, but in her dream, she just couldn’t find him. She watched as Fu Hengyi was about to be swallowed entirely by the marsh, and she was so anxious that she almost cried; then, with a misstep, she awoke.
All Shen Qinglan could think about was the scene from her dream last night. She wanted to call Fu Hengyi but couldn’t get through, then she remembered that Fu Hengyi was currently at a military exercise. However, calculating the time, the military exercise should have already ended.
"Aunt Zhao, are you going to cook? I’ll help you pick vegetables." Sitting there would only lead her to overthink, so Shen Qinglan decided to find something to do.
Aunt Zhao smiled and nodded, "Okay, I was planning to make celery dumplings this afternoon. You can help me pick the celery."
Shen Qinglan went to the kitchen to get the vegetables but suddenly heard the sound of something shattering in the kitchen. Aunt Zhao hurried to the kitchen just to see broken glass and ceramic pieces around Shen Qinglan’s feet, and she was frowning with her hand covering her chest.
Aunt Zhao didn’t bother with the broken pieces on the floor but went to Shen Qinglan, "Qinglan, do you feel unwell somewhere?" Noticing she was covering her chest, "Is it chest discomfort?"
Shen Qinglan looked dazed, but upon hearing Aunt Zhao’s words, she came back to her senses and lowered her hand, "Aunt Zhao, I’m fine. I just accidentally knocked over the bowl."
"Don’t worry about the bowl; it’s just a bowl. It’s broken, it’s broken. Are you okay?"
Shen Qinglan shook her head, "I’m fine."
Seeing her complexion seemed a bit off, Aunt Zhao said, "Qinglan, why don’t you go upstairs and rest a bit?"
"Okay, Aunt Zhao, I’ll leave this to you."
"Alright, go ahead, I’ll clean up here."
Shen Qinglan went back to her room and laid down on the bed, but she couldn’t fall asleep no matter how long she lay there. It took a while before she finally dozed off in a daze.
Downstairs in the living room, Old Sir Fu walked in from the Shen Family, and not seeing Shen Qinglan, he asked, "Where’s the girl Qinglan?"
Aunt Zhao pointed upstairs, "I saw she was out of sorts today, hadn’t slept well, so I told her to go rest."
Old Sir Fu nodded, "I’ve noticed she hasn’t been eating much these past two days. Xiao Zhao, make her some fermented rice balls this afternoon. Never mind, I’ll ask Xiao Song to do it; Qinglan likes the fermented rice balls she makes." Thinking this, Old Sir Fu immediately called the Shen Family.
Hearing that Shen Qinglan wanted to eat fermented rice balls, Sister-in-law Song didn’t hesitate and immediately agreed to come over in the afternoon to make them.
"Fu Hengyi!" Shen Qinglan shouted out loud, sitting up startled from the bed. Her chest heaved, and her face was pale. She placed her hand on her belly, gently caressing it.
"Baby, Mommy had a dream about your daddy again. Your daddy was in danger, but the elders always say dreams are contrary to reality, so your daddy will be fine, won’t he?"
Shen Qinglan whispered softly, and after finishing her words, she even laughed at herself. Fu Hengyi was only participating in a military exercise; what could possibly go wrong? She sat for a while, then got up from the bed and went to the bathroom to wash her face.
Downstairs in the living room, Old Sir Fu and Old Sir Shen were playing chess, while Sister-in-law Song and Aunt Zhao were making fermented rice balls in the kitchen.
Old Sir Fu held a chess piece, furrowing his brows in thought, "Old Man Fu, will you hurry up? You’ve been thinking for ages now. You might as well just concede."
Old Sir Fu waved his hand, "Don’t bother me, it’s because of you I can’t concentrate."
"If you’re not good at chess, just admit it. Blaming me now, Old Man Fu, you really are getting thicker-skinned by the day."
As they bickered, the phone rang. Old Sir Fu casually answered, "Hello, this is Fu Liye."
Whoever was on the other end of the line said something that made Old Sir Fu stand up suddenly, and the chess piece in his hand dropped to the floor, his expression changing dramatically.
"What do you mean ’Fu Hengyi has gone missing?!" Old Sir Fu’s voice was grave.
Upon hearing this, Old Sir Shen’s face changed as well, forgetting the chess game before him and looking directly at Old Sir Fu.
"I understand; please make sure to find Fu Heng," Old Sir Fu said solemnly, pausing before adding, "we must see him alive or see his body if he is dead!"
After hanging up the phone, Old Sir Fu’s expression grew solemn as he looked at Old Sir Shen, his voice filled with sorrow, "During the military exercises, foreign mercenaries infiltrated the area and killed our soldiers. Hengyi disappeared in his pursuit of them."
Old Sir Shen’s face turned sullen, "How could such a thing happen? How could foreign mercenaries enter our country undetected? And what were Shen Qian and the others doing, letting Hengyi chase after these desperados all by himself!"
"Grandfather, who did you just say was missing?" the voice of Shen Qinglan suddenly came down from the staircase. Both elders were startled, realizing they had forgotten Shen Qinglan was in the house.
"Qinglan, you’re awake; no one’s missing, you heard wrong," Old Sir Fu said, trying to keep his voice as calm as possible. With Fu Hengyi now missing, his fate unknown, he couldn’t let anything happen to Shen Qinglan.
Shen Qinglan fixed her gaze on Old Sir Fu, "Grandfather, I already heard it; Fu Hengyi... he’s missing, isn’t he?"
Old Sir Fu sighed deeply, "Qinglan, don’t worry yet. They’re searching for him, and I’m sure Hengyi will be fine."
Shen Qinglan swayed slightly, grabbing the handrail of the staircase to steady herself, "Where did Fu Hengyi go missing, Grandfather, tell me."
"In the border jungle, he has been missing for two days now."
Shen Qinglan’s face turned pale as she abruptly remembered the dream from the previous night. In that dream, Fu Hengyi was trapped in a swamp, and she couldn’t reach him – she could only watch as he was swallowed by the quagmire.
Old Sir Shen approached Shen Qinglan, helping her down the stairs as he comforted her, "Lanlan, don’t panic right now. Hengyi will be alright; you must believe in his capabilities."
Shen Qinglan was not comforted by Old Sir Shen’s words. She had already guessed who those so-called foreign mercenaries were. Her eyes trembled fiercely, and a profound fear dwelled in their depths.
"Grandfather, I’m alright. I believe he will be fine – for me and our child, he won’t let anything happen," Shen Qinglan said softly, her expression blank, "Hengyi promised me, no matter what happens, he wouldn’t let anything happen to me, and he would be with me until old age."
Shen Qinglan stood up, "Grandfather, I just remembered I have clothes to collect upstairs, I will go now."
Old Sir Shen wanted to retain her, but Old Sir Fu held him back, "Let her be alone for now."
Shen Qinglan returned to her room and immediately called Jin Enxi. Jin had been investigating Mrs. Jin without progress and hadn’t noticed any movement from King for quite some time, leading to ignorance of King’s whereabouts. Now alerted by Shen Qinglan, Jin also became anxious, "An, don’t panic just yet. I’ll try to track down King’s movements."
Yet Shen Qinglan made the call not for this reason, "Enxi, I need your help – I must go to the border."
"No," Jin Enxi immediately rejected her proposal, "An, you’re pregnant, it’s too dangerous there; you can’t go. We can help you look for Fu Hengyi. If he has indeed been taken by King’s people, I would risk my life to bring him back to you, on the condition that you do not go."
"Enxi, I must go. I have a feeling that Fu Hengyi has indeed been taken by King; he is in great danger. If I don’t save him, he will die, and if he dies, I won’t be able to live either, Enxi," Shen Qinglan’s voice choked, and if Jin were here, she would see her face wet with tears.
Jin Enxi fell silent, "An, I can’t agree. I can help you find Fu Hengyi, but you must stay at home — that’s my only condition. I promise I’ll bring him back to you safe and sound."
"If you won’t be with me, I could go alone," Shen Qinglan said.
"An, are you really forcing my hand? Do you realize your situation right now? If something happens to the child you’re carrying, what would you do?"
Jin Enxi knew how much Shen Qinglan loved Fu Hengyi and how much she cared about the child. If something happened to the child, Shen Qinglan would probably never forgive herself.
Shen Qinglan gently placed her hand on her belly, a tender look in her eyes, "I believe my child is strong. It surely wants me to find its father and bring him back safely. If..." her eyes darkened, "this child really leaves me because of this, it just means our time isn’t here yet. Enxi, you can call it my stubbornness or selfishness, but this time, I must find Fu Hengyi, no matter what... alive or dead."
The other end of the phone was filled with prolonged silence. Finally, Jin Enxi spoke firmly, "An, give me some time to prepare. One day. I’ll come to pick you up tomorrow morning."
"Thank you, Enxi."
After hanging up, Shen Qinglan sat on the bed, staring at the wedding photo of her with Fu Hengyi, unmoving for a long time. Fu Hengyi, wait for me, I’m coming for you.
That afternoon, both elders stayed in the study. Old Sir Shen had already been in touch with Shen Qian and knew all the details of the situation. His face was grim, even the men from Sharp Blade had been sacrificed; it seemed that Fu Hengyi’s fate was more likely to be ill than good.
