Chapter 317: Exercise 2 (Update 39)

Commander Liu was still smiling, "This military exercise needed someone to lead the team after all."

Chief of Staff Chen wanted to say something else, but Shen Qian, who had been sitting there quietly, spoke up, "It’s just an exercise, everyone. Let’s not ruin the good atmosphere. Moreover, the exercise isn’t over yet, and the outcome is still undecided."

Chief of Staff Chen glanced at Shen Qian with a disapproving look, "Chief of Staff Shen, of course, it doesn’t matter to you. Fu Hengyi is your son-in-law. Whether Fu Hengyi wins or the Blue Team wins, it makes no difference to you."

Now, the real significant force isn’t your Blue Team, but my Red Team! Chief of Staff Chen looked at the blinking red dots on the screen, feeling quite agitated. According to this trend, their Red Team was really going to lose.

Originally, Shen Qian wanted to play the peacemaker, but it backfired, causing him trouble. He exchanged a helpless look with Commander Liu. This Chief of Staff Chen simply took the win or loss too seriously. This military exercise was simply a test and inspection of their military capability by the higher-ups, and they just needed to perform normally.

"Chief of Staff Chen, it is true that Fu Hengyi is my son-in-law, but right now, he’s just the leader of a third party, and he has nothing to do with me," Shen Qian stated calmly. Though his temperament wasn’t as tough as Commander Liu’s, he wasn’t someone who easily let things slide. Naturally, if someone provoked him, he would retaliate.

Chief of Staff Chen wanted to say more, but another person quickly held him back, "Alright, Old Chen, we’re all comrades here. Why argue? And you’re both leaders. It looks bad if your subordinates see you like this. Aren’t you afraid of being laughed at?"

Chief of Staff Chen glanced at the person who had spoken and closed his mouth, but a faint smell of gunpowder still lingered in the command center.

Mu Liancheng and four others all passed before him, suddenly, someone burst out from behind and took down the last man of the five. At that moment, Meng Liang, Qian Fei, and a few others also burst from their hiding places, pouncing on their respective targets. Fu Hengyi alone faced two opponents, and swiftly, within a few moves, he had taken down the robust blue soldier.

Seeing this, Pang Wen immediately raised his hand and attacked Fu Hengyi. However, being young and lacking experience in combat, he couldn’t hold on for more than twenty moves and a dagger ended up at his throat.

"You’re already dead," Fu Hengyi said coolly.

Pang Wen looked at Fu Hengyi, ignoring the dagger on his own throat. The other wore the same jungle camouflage as they did, but the patch on his arm was black, confirming his guess that this group was the third party.

After Mu Liancheng took out his target, he watched the fight between Fu Hengyi and Pang Wen. Seeing that Pang Wen managed to hold his own for more than twenty moves under Fu Hengyi, his admiration deepened.

Seeing that he was no longer resisting, Fu Hengyi withdrew his dagger, his expression still indifferent.

"Kid, not bad," Meng Liang patted Pang Wen’s shoulder, commenting.

Unexpectedly, this was met with a cold glare from Pang Wen. Meng Liang chuckled, "Kid, got a personality, eh? But I like it."

"Alright, let’s move on. We still have another target," Qian Fei said.

"Yeah, let’s go. The sooner we finish, the sooner we can go home. This godforsaken place, you get tired of it if you stay too long," Meng Liang agreed and was about to depart.

"Are you guys from the special forces?" Pang Wen asked from behind.

Meng Liang turned his head and chuckled, "You guess."

One can easily guess that they are indeed, thought the robust blue soldier.

Qin Fei swept them a glance and said, "You are now ’dead,’ so you can’t talk. Stay here, and someone will come to pick you up soon."

With that, they quickly disappeared into the jungle.

"My god, is this the combat power of the special forces? They are too formidable," said one person after Fu Hengyi and his team had left, earning nods of agreement from the others.

"I mean, did you guys see their moves, especially the one who looked so cold? I didn’t even realize I was ’dead’ before I knew it," the robust blue soldier said, his tone full of admiration and a touch of envy.

Pang Wen remained silent, his head bowed, his face serious. He looked at his hands; under Fu Hengyi, he hadn’t lasted even thirty moves. He had always thought himself strong, but now he realized that in front of a true powerhouse, he was still as weak as a child.

Fu Hengyi. Pang Wen silently repeated this name. Maybe even Fu Hengyi himself didn’t expect that Pang Wen knew him, but because of today’s encounter, Pang Wen made him his target, always thinking of how to surpass him. Eventually, he became the King of Soldiers, and as he wished, he entered the Sharp Blade Base, becoming an exemplary special forces soldier.

"Captain, is our next target the Red Team that just left?" Meng Liang asked.

Fu Hengyi glanced at him, said nothing, and Meng Liang immediately understood his meaning, making a ’keep quiet’ gesture. Fu Hengyi looked around and then headed in a certain direction, followed promptly by the others.

Just as Commander Liu had said, among the twenty participants this time, more than half were new recruits undergoing selection. To assess these new soldiers’ capabilities, Fu Hengyi had not employed the usual practice of old soldiers leading new ones; instead, all the teams were led by new recruits, which meant that the remaining four four-person squads were led by new soldiers who had also devised their own combat plans.

After contacting several squads to understand their situations, Fu Hengyi was fairly satisfied. Although their achievements didn’t match those of his squad, it was impressive for new soldiers, showing that the training in the previous period had been very effective.

In the command center, Shen Qian watched a few individuals being brought back through surveillance, sighing slightly inside. It seemed unlikely that they would win this military exercise, as the participants were all personally selected by him from within the Military Region, and he knew their capabilities. Pang Wen was the best among them, but it seemed Shen Qian had been too optimistic about his potential.

Chief of Staff Chen noticed Shen Qian’s mood and with thinly disguised schadenfreude commented, "Chief of Staff Shen, it seems your son-in-law isn’t going easy on your team."

Shen Qian gave a slight smile, "A mission is a mission. It’s perfectly normal, and there’s no question of going easy."

Stung by the veiled rebuff, Chief of Staff Chen snorted and fell silent.

Commander Liu, on the other hand, was full of pride, satisfied with this batch of new soldiers, just like Fu Hengyi.

Elsewhere, Fu Hengyi and his team were hurrying in the direction of the Red Team, but without seeing any of its members. Meng Liang couldn’t help saying, "Captain, where did that Red Team disappear to just now? They vanished in the blink of an eye. Did they run off after hearing our movements earlier?"

"How could that be? Our movements were so slight and we were so far away, it would be strange if they had noticed us. I think they’ve been dealt with by someone else."

Meng Liang: ... Are these guys that weak?

Indeed they were, as they had just seen the group from the Red Team they were looking for. Ten people lay on the ground, looking utterly exhausted. One of them, seeing Fu Hengyi’s men, immediately sprang up, "Are you guys from the Blue Team?"

Meng Liang chuckled and, pointing at the Q in his hand, said, "Kid, you’re already a ’dead man’, you have no right to speak, and you shouldn’t be using Q."

Hearing this, the other person put down the Q, sizing up Fu Hengyi and his team, noticing their arm badges, and finally realizing these weren’t people from either the Red Team or the Blue Team.

"Are you third-party people?" Just as they were being talked about, in the time it took to be fetched, they too had been discussing this military exercise.

As time passed, it wasn’t just Pang Wen who sensed something was off; an increasing number of people were detecting the anomalies.

Meng Liang approached, patted the other’s shoulder, flashing a grinning smile showing eight teeth, "You’re already a ’dead man’. Why so chatty? By the way, do you know where your comrades are?"

At this, the rest looked at him speechlessly, Qian Fei giving him an ’are you an idiot?’ look.

Meng Liang sheepishly chuckled, "Well, what can I say? I got carried away and misspoke."

"Let’s go," Fu Hengyi said indifferently.

They hadn’t walked far when they encountered a group of people fighting. The surrounding tree trunks bore marks of blank rounds, and in the center, three individuals were ganging up on one.

Meng Liang noticed the person in the middle, his interest piqued, not expecting him to participate in this exercise too.

"This crazy guy has improved again," Meng Liang observed for a while and commented.

The person being attacked was familiar to them, Zhao Wei, whose penchant for challenging others was well-known, and they had secretly watched his sparring sessions with others.

Zhao Wei, although outnumbered and visibly bruised, grew increasingly excited. These past few months, due to Fu Hengyi’s departure from the Beijing Military Region, and Shen Qinglan’s absence, Zhao Wei had felt the lack of challenging opponents, much regretting Shen Qinglan’s departure.

Initially part of the exercise with his teammates, they were ambushed by a mysterious group halfway, resulting in the ’death’ of his team members, leaving him the sole survivor who then ran into these three members from the Red Team.

These three were likely elite forces of the Red Team, quite strong, having fought for some time without a victor yet, with Zhao Wei growing more thrilled, while the other three were at a loss, having initially thought him to be an easy target.

"Captain, do you think Zhao Wei can win?" asked Meng Liang, rubbing his chin with great interest.
