Chapter 31: 31. Do not replace

Shen Qinglan went straight to the train station; she didn’t choose a plane because she liked to enjoy the scenery along the way.
She had no destination, and casually bought the ticket for the earliest train. It was only after she got the ticket that she found out it was to Hang City.
Shen Qinglan had bought a high-speed rail ticket and was lucky enough to get a window seat. From her spot, she had a perfect view of the passing scenery.
After she got on the train, a girl of about seventeen or eighteen came by. Her face was heavily made-up, her long hair was dyed wine red, and she was carrying a backpack and dragging a large suitcase. She stopped in front of Shen Qinglan. Shen Qinglan assumed she was just passing by and didn’t pay attention.
But the girl kept staring at her without saying a word. Shen Qinglan looked at her, puzzled by the girl’s intentions.
Seeing that she had caught Shen Qinglan’s attention, the girl smiled slightly and said, "I don’t like sitting by the aisle, could we switch seats? I can pay you extra."
Although the request was polite, her gaze was arrogantly dismissive, as if she assumed that Shen Qinglan, with her plain clothing and ordinary background, would surely agree if given extra money.
If it weren’t for not being able to get a plane ticket, and because she was in a hurry, she wouldn’t have taken this lousy train, let alone an aisle seat with people constantly passing by. It was so annoying.
Shen Qinglan noted the girl’s expression, but her own face remained calm. Before she left, she had applied a bit of makeup, just subtly highlighting a few features, making her appearance a bit more ordinary yet still beautiful, without being stunning.
Shen Qinglan glanced at the girl, then looked away without speaking.
The girl, unhappy at being ignored, said, "Hey, I’m talking to you. Didn’t you hear me?"
"I heard you, so what?" A clear and pleasant voice responded.
"You heard me but didn’t reply, that’s rude. I said I want to switch seats with you, and I’ll pay you." She held up two fingers, "Two hundred."
Without even lifting her eyelids, Shen Qinglan thought to herself, did she look like she needed money? She glanced at her own clothes thoughtfully.
Two hundred, the ticket itself cost over five hundred, and two hundred was indeed not a small amount, but even so, Shen Qinglan made no movement. Some others seemed tempted, though. She won’t switch, but we will; we don’t mind sitting by the aisle.
The girl noticed their reactions, her arrogance growing more pronounced, confident that money could solve anything.
Just as she waited for Shen Qinglan to give up her seat, Shen Qinglan calmly uttered two words, "Not switching."
The girl’s smile froze in disbelief as she stared at Shen Qinglan. "Hey, don’t be greedy, two hundred is a lot."
She thought Shen Qinglan was dissatisfied with the amount and wanted to raise the price.
Finding the situation amusing, Shen Qinglan didn’t bother to explain. She closed her eyes, unwilling to engage further with the spoiled girl.
The girl, seeing she was being ignored, became furious and glared at Shen Qinglan as if her stare could burn a hole through her.
Luckily for her, she was the last to board in this carriage. Otherwise, standing in the aisle like this, blocking others behind her, would have driven them crazy.
Stubborn by nature, the girl stood her ground, refusing to sit, determined to hold out against Shen Qinglan.
Eventually, someone couldn’t stand by any longer. A middle-aged man waved at her, "Young lady, I’ll switch with you if you pay me."
The girl turned towards the voice, where a young woman sat holding a one-year-old child next to the man.
The girl screwed up her face in disgust. She despised children the most; when they cried, it drove her nuts.
The young woman, noticing the girl’s disdainful glance, looked a bit upset, tugged at the man’s sleeve, and shook her head. The middle-aged man chuckled regretfully; he thought he could earn two hundred yuan.
"Young lady, I’ll switch with you," a middle-aged woman from two rows ahead offered. An elderly person with white hair sat beside her.
Once again, the girl turned up her nose. She wanted a window seat, sure, but more than that, she wanted peace and quiet.
Her gaze rested on Shen Qinglan again. She extended three fingers, "I’ll give you three hundred, switch with me." Three hundred was her absolute limit; any more would be unacceptable.
This time, Shen Qinglan didn’t even bother to open her eyes. "Not switching."
The girl was so angry she pointed at Shen Qinglan, struggling to get any words out.
The seat belonged to Shen Qinglan; she wasn’t obligated to switch, and there was nothing the girl could do.
Fuming for a moment, the girl finally sat down with a huff, thinking to herself, "Fine, don’t switch—I just saved three hundred yuan."
The carriage finally quieted down; some sighed with relief, some with disappointment.
Nevertheless, the girl next to Shen Qinglan remained puffed up with anger for the rest of the journey, muttering complaints about the stuffy conditions and how a flight would be far more comfortable.
Shen Qinglan continued gazing out the window, ignoring her entirely.
