Chapter 289: 289. Mr. Fu Tells Bedtime Stories (11 more updates)
"Is Mrs. Jin targeting you because she knows your identity?" Fu Hengyi guessed. If the other party knew Shen Qinglan Mei’s identity, it would be understandable. After all, many people had died at the hands of Mei, and among them, one or two might seek revenge knowing her identity.
Shen Qinglan immediately denied the guess, "No, if she knew, she would have revealed my identity to the people in the underworld, and I would be in big trouble."
Fu Hengyi also knew that what Shen Qinglan was saying was true. "Regardless, you need to be more careful lately. I will also figure out a way to check into this Mrs. Jin."
Seeing his grave expression, Shen Qinglan smiled, "Don’t be so serious. Look, I’m fine right now, and besides, your wife is very capable. Ordinary people can’t hurt me. Even now, with a baby bump, nobody can trouble me."
The title of the world’s number one assassin wasn’t for nothing.
Despite Shen Qinglan’s attempt to reassure him, Fu Hengyi wasn’t consoled. He reached out and held Shen Qinglan’s hand, "I really want to turn you into a Thumbelina and keep you in my pocket so that I can protect you all the time."
Shen Qinglan chuckled, "Fu Hengyi, trust me, okay? For you and the child, I will protect myself well, and besides, I have Enxi by my side, don’t I?"
Fu Hengyi merely smiled without a word, but he was internally resolved to thoroughly investigate Mrs. Jin to nip any dangers in the bud.
That evening, before going to sleep, Fu Hengyi made a long phone call. When he came in, his expression was still solemn. Shen Qinglan, sitting on the bed, said to him, "The doctor mentioned that after three months, the fetus develops quickly and begins to perceive the outside world. It’s a good time for prenatal education. Fu Hengyi, you shouldn’t set a bad example. You need to smile more, so our baby will grow up to be cheerful."
She spoke earnestly, which successfully melted the ice on Fu Hengyi’s face. He leaned down and kissed her forehead, "Understood, my dear wife."
Shen Qinglan picked up a book from the bedside table and handed it to Fu Hengyi, "A bedtime story."
Fu Hengyi raised an eyebrow at her, "Want to hear a story?"
Shen Qinglan nodded, "This is for prenatal education." She thought about the times they had told stories to Little Douding without any complaints, "It’s also to get you used to your role as a daddy soon."
Since the lady had spoken, Fu Hengyi naturally obliged. He picked up the storybook and randomly flipped open a few pages, "Once upon a time, in a forest, there lived seven dwarfs who..." His deep, magnetic voice slowly rose in Shen Qinglan’s ears as she watched him tell the story with enthusiasm.
Although it was such a tender story, Fu Hengyi managed to make it sound terrifying. Halfway through, Shen Qinglan couldn’t help but interject, "Fu Hengyi, if you tell stories to the baby like this in the future, you’ll scare them into crying." It was a fairytale, yet Fu Hengyi made it sound like a ghost story, leaving Shen Qinglan speechless.
Fu Hengyi put down the storybook, "Then what would you like to hear?"
Shen Qinglan thought for a moment, "Tell me about your own stories from childhood to now. There must be some interesting incidents."
"Wouldn’t I bore you?"
"Go on."
Fu Hengyi thought about it, picked a few incidents, and began to tell Shen Qinglan, but it wasn’t long before the person who had clamored for a story fell asleep.
Fu Hengyi looked at her peaceful sleeping face, held her in his arms, and fell asleep too.
Shen Qinglan woke up hungry in the middle of the night. She opened her eyes, glanced at her phone on the nightstand and saw it was half-past two in the morning. After putting down the phone, she tried to close her eyes and sleep, but couldn’t, and turned over, unintentionally waking Fu Hengyi.
"What’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell anywhere?" Fu Hengyi asked, concerned.
Shen Qinglan shook her head, "Sorry for waking you."
"Do you feel uncomfortable anywhere?" Fu Hengyi didn’t mind being woken up; he was more concerned about Shen Qinglan’s well-being.
"No, just hungry and craving something," Shen Qinglan hesitated before saying.
Upon hearing this, Fu Hengyi got up, put on his clothes, and said, "What do you want to eat? I’ll make it for you."
"No need. I’ll probably fall back asleep soon. You go back to sleep; don’t worry about me."
How could Fu Hengyi not care for her? "It’s fine, I’m also hungry. How about I make wontons?"
"Okay, I crave shrimp wontons," Shen Qinglan affirmed. Fu Hengyi pressed her, "Just wait, I’ll bring some up as soon as I’m done."
Pregnant women have low resistance, and although the room was heated, he didn’t want Shen Qinglan to catch a cold and suffer.
Shen Qinglan lay back down, watching Fu Hengyi’s retreating figure, her lips slightly curled in sweetness.
"Who’s there?" Aunt Zhao, getting up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night, heard some noise and called out.
"Aunt Zhao, it’s me. I woke up hungry in the middle of the night and came down to cook some wontons. No worries, go back to sleep," Fu Hengyi said, holding a large bowl of wontons.
Aunt Zhao came out of her room, "You should have called me if you wanted wontons. Why did you get up yourself?" Seeing him holding the bowl, she guessed that Qinglan might have woken up hungry in the middle of the night.
"Can you bring some vinegar? That way, Qinglan won’t find it too greasy." As he spoke, Fu Hengyi went to the kitchen and poured some vinegar.
"Just leave the bowl on the stove, I’ll wash it in the morning."
Fu Hengyi smiled and nodded, taking the wontons upstairs. Qinglan had already smelled the aroma of the wontons.
"Don’t get up yet, set up the little table first."
There was a computer desk in the room next to the bedside table, within reach of Qinglan. Once he had set up the small table, Fu Hengyi placed the wontons in front of Qinglan. She ate a few bites and then put down her chopsticks.
"Don’t they taste good?" asked Fu Hengyi.
Qinglan shook her head, "No, I am full." In reality, she just craved a taste.
Fu Hengyi picked up her chopsticks, said nothing, and quickly finished the wontons. The room was filled with the smell of wontons. Knowing Qinglan disliked the smell lingering in the bedroom, Fu Hengyi opened the window halfway to air out the room.
Cold air poured in from the window. Qinglan wrapped herself tightly in the quilt, watching Fu Hengyi tidy up, her eyes brimming with a smile, "Fu Hengyi, your son will definitely be a food lover and will surely love to trouble Daddy."
Fu Hengyi quickly tidied up. Hearing Qinglan’s words, he spoke softly, "Why are you so sure?"
"Look, he never thought about eating in the middle of the night when you were in the military for so long, but the moment you came back, he started bothering me," Qinglan said convincingly. It was initially a joke, but upon reflection, it really seemed that way, and she couldn’t help but laugh.
"If he dares to be naughty, I will definitely teach him a lesson."
Fu Hengyi said, put things away downstairs, and by the time he came back, the smell in the room had mostly dissipated. He closed the window, lay back in bed but didn’t fall asleep, instead, fiddling with Qinglan’s hand.
Qinglan lay in his arms, chatting sporadically with Fu Hengyi, and soon fell back asleep.
Fu Hengyi watched her intently, his hand resting on her stomach. In fact, if you paid attention, her waist was indeed a bit larger. He gently touched Qinglan’s stomach, his eyes deep and thoughtful.

The next day, Qinglan and Fu Hengyi went to the mall where Fu Hengyi said they needed to buy things for the baby.
"Fu Hengyi, look at these little shoes, they are so cute," Qinglan said gently in the maternity store, holding a pair of tiny shoes.
Fu Hengyi looked down at her, "If you like them, we can take them home."
Qinglan put the items back, "Never mind, we still don’t know if it’s a boy or a girl; it’s too early to buy now."
Fu Hengyi picked up a pair of yellow ones, "This color is good. It works for either a boy or a girl. Even if it’s not worn, it’s nice to have around the house."
Qinglan was somewhat speechless, who would use those as decoration? But she really liked these little things and ended up buying them anyway, considering they would be useful.
Leaving the maternity store, Qinglan looked at the bags in Fu Hengyi’s hands, and said softly, "Fu Hengyi, you’re going to be a wonderful father." He had been very attentive in the store, listening to the clerk explain how to use these items and picking up some essential tips for expectant fathers.
Fu Hengyi tenderly looked at her, "You will be a great mother too."
Qinglan and Fu Hengyi exchanged glances, their eyes overflowing with mutual affection like water.
They then went upstairs to buy several sets of maternity clothes for Qinglan, before heading home.
Old Sir Fu was waiting for them to have dinner, "Qinglan, come and eat quickly. Xiao Zhao specially made a soup for lunch that’s great for pregnant women. Have some more."
Qinglan and Fu Hengyi had actually eaten a bit on their way, so they were a bit late returning. Seeing that Old Sir Fu was still waiting for them made them feel guilty, "Grandpa, you don’t have to wait for us for meals."
Old Sir Fu was unconcerned, "It’s just a matter of waiting for a while, and it doesn’t take much effort. Besides, it’s livelier when the family eats together."
After dinner, the family sat on the sofa and chatted. Fu Hengyi suddenly spoke up, "Grandpa, I’m planning to apply for a transfer back to the Beijing Military Region in March next year."
