Chapter 115: 115 I won’t leave, I won’t abandon you (second update)
Fu Hengyi’s expression shifted slightly, his voice softened as he spoke, "I have said that as long as you don’t leave, I will never abandon you. This promise will always hold."
Shen Qinglan smiled, the corners of her lips widening in a beautiful and exuberant arc, dazzling the boy not far away.
"Fu Hengyi, I’ll wait for your return."
"Okay," Fu Hengyi replied warmly, his eyes gentle.
Shen Qinglan went to the cafeteria to buy breakfast, then returned to her dorm room.
The others in the room had not woken up yet. She did not wake them but quietly sat there reading, waiting until it was about time to rouse them from sleep.
There was an internship presentation today; they couldn’t be late.
After the presentation, Yu Xiaoxuan hurriedly returned to the dorm to pack a few clothes, and, like a whirlwind, she left; Linda had already sent a car to wait for her outside.
Fang Tong went to her boyfriend’s place, and Wu Qian packed up and left without telling anyone where she was going.
With all her affairs temporarily settled and no need to return to school for a while, Shen Qinglan planned to head back to Jiangxin Garden. Though it was still more than half a month until the end of the month, at that moment, she wanted to return home—to the home she shared with Fu Hengyi.
She had nothing much to pack—just a backpack and a laptop.
She had just walked out of the dormitory building when she saw Yan Shengyu waiting outside. Seeing her emerge, he immediately walked over to her; Shen Qinglan couldn’t even pretend she hadn’t seen him if she wanted to.
"Is there something?"
Yan Shengyu looked at her with cool, distant eyes, a trace of pain flickering in his. "Are you okay?"
Shen Qinglan looked at him, puzzled.
"I just found out about the post today; I wasn’t at school yesterday," Yan Shengyu explained.
The confusion in Shen Qinglan’s eyes deepened. What did his being at school have to do with her?
"I just want to say that I believe you’re not that kind of person."
"The school’s announcement has already been made," her words implied that the school had investigated everything, and whether he believed or not didn’t really matter to her.
Yan Shengyu felt a little defeated; he only wanted to show his concern for her, but it seemed he never quite hit the mark when he spoke.
"I have things to do, if there’s nothing else, please excuse me."
Yan Shengyu’s eyes dimmed as he stepped aside slightly.
Shen Qinglan walked right past him, but after just a couple of steps, her phone rang. She stopped, picked it up, and looked at the name on the screen with a slightly odd look in her eyes. From the corner of her eyes, she glanced at Yan Shengyu and answered the call.
"Big sister, where are you?" Ya Xi’s muffled voice came through from the other end.
"At school."
"Big sister, I’m at the gate of your school. Can I come and see you?"
Shen Qinglan glanced at the date on her phone and confirmed it was Monday. "Don’t you have classes today?"
"I do, but I don’t want to go to class, big sister. Will you keep me company?" Her voice was dull, and slightly hoarse as if she had been crying.
Shen Qinglan paused, initially intending to tell her to return to her classes but instead agreed. She glanced at Yan Shengyu; it seemed he had no idea his sister was skipping school.
Remembering the girl’s distressed voice, Shen Qinglan decided not to tell Yan Shengyu about her skipping school.
At the school gate, as soon as Shen Qinglan came out, she saw Ya Xi standing by the wall near the guards’ booth, her head bowed, staring at her own toes, her hair hanging loosely, obscuring her face.
"Ya Xi."
Hearing her name, Ya Xi looked up and saw Shen Qinglan, her eyes immediately welling up with tears.
"Big sister." Without the obstruction of the phone, the hoarseness in his voice was even more evident.
"Um," Shen Qinglan responded.
"Let’s go, I’ll take you to have some ice cream." Yu Xiaoxuan had said that eating sweets could improve one’s mood, and since Ya Xi and Yu Xiaoxuan had similar personalities, their tastes probably wouldn’t be too different either.
Ya Xi did not seem very happy to hear about the ice cream, but she followed Shen Qinglan nonetheless.
Shen Qinglan hailed a cab and took Ya Xi to a nearby dessert shop, where she ordered several flavors of ice cream.
"You can only have one bite of each," Shen Qinglan reminded her.
Ya Xi nodded and scooped a spoonful.
Shen Qinglan ordered a glass of Qingshui. She didn’t like sweets and silently watched Ya Xi eat without saying a word.
Ya Xi obediently had just one bite of each flavor and then stopped.
"Can we talk about what happened now? Why haven’t you been going to class?"
Upon hearing this, Ya Xi’s eyes reddened again. "Big sister, my parents want to send me abroad."
Shen Qinglan paused, not understanding why this was so upsetting—many children wished to go abroad but lacked the means.
"I said I wanted to apply to B University, the same university as big sister." Ya Xi felt very sad, thinking about how she wouldn’t be able to see her big sister after going abroad.
Shen Qinglan: "... I’m graduating next year, even if you get into B University, we won’t be at the same school."
"But at least we’ll be in the same city. If I want to find big sister, I still can."
Shen Qinglan actually found it hard to understand Ya Xi’s dependency and affection for her. They hadn’t met often, and their first meeting wasn’t even pleasant. If it was because she had saved her, then, it kind of made sense why she was so dependent on her.
Ya Xi kept her head down. "Big sister, do you think I’m ungrateful? Other kids want to go abroad and can’t, but I’m arguing with my family because they want to send me."
Shen Qinglan hadn’t thought that way—everyone has their own thoughts and choices.
"You can talk to your family about your thoughts."
Ya Xi shook her head, "I have, but they say I’m still young, that I don’t understand what I’m doing. They are my parents, they wouldn’t hurt me."
"They are not wrong." Parents in Country Z like to make detailed plans and strategies for their children, paving a perfect path for them.
Although Shen Qinglan didn’t like this approach of parents in Country Z, she could somewhat understand it.
Upon hearing this, Ya Xi’s voice choked up. "But isn’t it my life that I’m living? Since it’s my life, why can’t I make the choices, just because I am still considered a child in their eyes? But I am adult now, I should be able to make decisions for my life."
"Why do your parents want to send you abroad?"
Ya Xi was stunned and fell silent.
Shen Qinglan wasn’t in a hurry.
"Because my grades aren’t good enough to get into a good university here."
Shen Qinglan raised her eyebrows slightly—it seemed that Ya Xi was quite aware of her own situation.
"Do you think you can make it?"
Ya Xi nodded, "I can. There’s half a year left until the college entrance exams. Although it’s a short time, I will work hard. I can definitely make it."
Ya Xi’s eyes were resolute, looking at Shen Qinglan with a glow of hope for affirmation and her dependency on her.
Shen Qinglan was startled. The person in front of her seemed to overlap with a face from her memory, causing a slight ache in her heart.
