Chapter 241: Chapter 241 The Origin of Bai Gong Temple, Known to Few Besides the Clan Leaders

Delphine immediately made a call to Leah.

"You received the invitation this quickly?" Leah was sitting in the yard, watching the servants bathe her Ragdoll cats. She was frail, unable to hold the cats herself, and could only watch from afar as the two lazy kittens rolled around playfully.

"How do we get to the Wade Family Ancestral Hall?" Delphine furrowed her brows and spoke quietly, "I heard this ancestral hall hasn’t been opened for decades. What are you all going there for?"

"Ignatius Leclair never mentioned the Wade Family Ancestral Hall to you?" Leah propped up her chin, smiling brightly as she watched the lively antics of the Ragdoll cats and said, "Looks like I’ll be the one to tell you. The Wade Family packed up and emigrated to Canada a few days ago, didn’t they? The piece of ’meat’ they’ve left behind is something everyone wants to snatch, and my brother was ruthlessly bold enough to take it. This time, heading to the Wade Family Ancestral Hall... it’s most likely a trap, a proverbial ’Banquet at Hong Gate.’"

Leah gave Delphine a brief explanation of the origins of the Wade Family Ancestral Hall.

Back in the day, when the Southern seas were still undeveloped wilderness, several declining, fading families migrated to the region. They forged shipping routes from South Asia to Eastern Europe, opening up vast markets and yielding immense profits. The first few families to rise to prominence settled in the territory of the Southern seas, transforming the wild lands into the East’s most dazzling City of Splendour.

These families joined forces to establish the Hundred Families Ancestral Hall, where they enshrined the Southern seas’ generations of aristocratic families. Whenever a family fell and disappeared, a new one would take its place, and the ancestral hall would reopen to hold rituals of worship, record oaths to the heavens and earth, marking the transition as formalized and gaining recognition from the Southern seas’ aristocratic clans. It could be said that a complete hereditary system was established here. This system elevated aristocratic families to an exalted status.

The rules set down hundreds of years ago were known to very few besides the heads of aristocratic families. If not for the Squire Family intending to replace the Wade Family as the newest elite clan in the Southern seas, even this knowledge wouldn’t have surfaced.

Delphine fell silent, visibly taken aback. After a long pause, her voice sounded soft and tender as she asked, "So... you’re formally becoming Southern seas folks now?"

"Haha, surprised, aren’t you? Even I didn’t expect it. Griffith and I have always relied on each other, living precarious lives with no guarantees. Who would’ve thought that we’d actually manage to settle down and take root in the Southern seas?" Leah chuckled lazily. "But we need to perform the rituals of worship and record our oaths to the heavens and earth for it to count as formalized. Only heads of prominent families are allowed to enter the Hundred Families Ancestral Hall. My health prevents me from tolerating wind or dealing with shocks, so I can’t go this time. You’ll have to go in my place. Consider it a chance to meet faces and put down some roots. Whoever dares to bully you in the future will need to think twice."

"But this gathering could be an ambush. Keep an eye on my brother for me. With you there, he might restrain himself a bit. If anything happens, just run straight to Ignatius Leclair. Got it?" Leah instructed the servants to move the two kittens into the sunlight, where she laid down a thick wool blanket for them to frolic and bask in the sun with their bellies exposed.

"Alright, I’ll make a trip to the Hundred Families Ancestral Hall." Delphine’s gaze grew misty, clouded with a faint vapor, her voice low and croaky. If not for that chance encounter with the Squire siblings years ago, she would’ve died alone in some remote mountain forest, her remains left to decay unnoticed.

The Squire siblings, though strangers at the outset, treated her far more like family than her birth mother ever did.

"Oh, by the way, these two kittens are now named Leaf and Delphine. We’ll share custody. I heard Ignatius Leclair has severe pet allergies—you can take them in a few days and keep them at your place." Leah’s mischievous smile sparkled.

Delphine couldn’t help but burst into laughter. Thinking of Ignatius Leclair’s allergies, she reflected that after all this time with him, his allergies were his only true weakness.
