Chapter 95: Chapter 95: Zhou Lin, There’s No Need for False Pretenses Between Us
Xu Tian was absolutely furious, she stood up abruptly, her gaze sharp as a knife, "Because she sung live before, I liked it, so I got in touch with her. Then she suddenly stopped broadcasting. I asked her why, and she told me she was recording something for a very important person, her voice was hoarse at the time."
"I just wanted to know who was so important that she had to strain her voice like that for them. She was under a lot of pressure back then and confided to me about your existence. She said she couldn’t bear to see the person she liked so downcast, she had to help you."
"Those scriptures were earnestly obtained from the temple by kneeling and begging. She said you definitely wouldn’t read them, so she decided to read them out loud word for word for your sake."
Xu Tian clenched her cellphone, "Zhou Lin, you could find out about this if you did a little investigation, there’s no need for me to lie to you. If you have any conscience, you’ll either treasure her properly or set her free."
She paused before speaking in a hoarse voice, "Those complex scriptures, how many times did she have to read them to make the recordings sound so smooth?"
Secretary Zhang saw Xu Tian out.
Zhou Lin sat alone on the couch for a long time, with a voice recording playing on his phone. It was those very scriptures his mother had sent him that year. The trials of the years had long since removed that psychological shadow, but the recordings were still in his phone.
He hadn’t listened to them for years, but for some reason, he never deleted them.
After a passage was complete, Zhou Lin picked up his phone and dialed Lin Yu’s number.
Lately, Lin Yu hadn’t been answering his calls much.
So, he called three times, and the other side probably thought that after three calls, it must be important. Therefore, she finally picked up, her tone not very friendly, "What is it?"
Zhou Lin was silent for a few seconds before slowly speaking, "Mom, when I had that accident, the recordings of the scriptures you sent to my phone, where did they come from?"
The events of that year hadn’t been brought up for years.
But no one had forgotten.
In Lin Yu’s scoffing tone, there was a mix of gritted teeth and restrained triumph, "What, have you finally realized that’s Zhiwei’s voice?"
It was indeed Cheng Zhiwei.
The voice reciting the scriptures, even though female, was very deep and slow, solemn and reverent. Zhou Lin had never linked it to Cheng Zhiwei.
Lin Yu scolded him with frustration, "Blind and deaf."
And then she hung up the phone.
...
Cheng Zhiwei got home not long after receiving Xu Tian’s exhilarating phone call, laughter pouring through the phone, "Yueyue, I’m so thrilled, you should’ve seen Zhou Lin’s face, it was such a thrill."
Cheng Zhiwei listened for a while before she understood that the things she did for Zhou Lin back then were now all revealed by Xu Tian.
She listened calmly with no hint of emotional fluctuation.
Xu Tian didn’t hear a response and her laughter began to fade, "I’m sorry, Yue, I said it all without your permission; I was just too angry."
"I’m not blaming you," said Cheng Zhiwei, "I just find it meaningless. Even if he knows, what then? He likes Seo Zhenzhen."
So these things failed to stir any emotion in her,
What was a bit unexpected, though, was that he failed to recognize her voice.
But that didn’t matter anymore.
The call ended.
Wang Mei brought out a late-night snack, "Young Madam, the wontons are ready, try them."
She always thought Cheng Zhiwei was too thin and needed more nourishment.
Cheng Zhiwei smiled and ate a few; Wang Mei’s cooking was excellent, always able to stimulate one’s appetite.
Halfway through eating, Zhou Lin returned.
His gaze briefly swept in the direction where Cheng Zhiwei was and he paused in his step.
Wang Mei noticed and walked over to quietly ask him if he wanted a late-night snack.
Zhou Lin never ate late-night snacks, but this time he pondered for only three seconds before nodding, "Okay."
He then walked over and sat down in front of Cheng Zhiwei.
Cheng Zhiwei sipped her soup in small mouthfuls. The pristine white soup spoon occasionally clinked against the bowl, emitting a crisp sound.
Zhou Lin watched as her black hair slid down, draping over her shoulders, and before it could fall further, it was propped up by her slender wrist and tucked behind her ear.
During the half-hour journey home, he had almost finished investigating the matter.
After all, as Xu Tian had said, it wasn’t a secret; a little investigation revealed the truth.
Over a bowl of wontons, Cheng Zhiwei ate until fine beads of sweat appeared on the tip of her nose, her complexion gaining a touch of rosiness.
Zhou Lin watched her and suddenly found her somewhat adorable. He asked subconsciously, "Is it good?"
Cheng Zhiwei put down her soup spoon, wiped her hands with a tissue, and got up to leave.
Zhou Lin followed suit and stood, "Cheng Zhiwei."
"If you feel guilty because of what Tiantian said, then I hope you can divorce me decisively." Cheng Zhiwei turned back to look at him slowly, without making a scene or showing any excitement now that he knew the truth.
Such calmness, as if, to her, it was but a trivial matter.
Zhou Lin’s breathing slowed a bit, wanting to say something, but Cheng Zhiwei had already gone upstairs.
She didn’t care about his reaction after learning the truth because to her, he wasn’t worth caring about anymore.
Wang Mei brought over the cooked wontons. Zhou Lin finished them in a few bites and was about to go upstairs.
Wang Mei called from behind, "Young Master, the Young Madam really has no bad intentions."
Zhou Lin paused, then nodded, "I know."
Even though Cheng Zhiwei acted calmly, she still suffered from insomnia due to those issues when alone.
During Zhou Lin’s troubled years, Cheng Zhiwei frequently visited him. However, given his unstable emotions, she didn’t dare approach him too closely, afraid to upset him. Instead, she watched from afar until she realized the sutras she recited were effective. She cried with joy.
She thought; she had finally been able to help him.
The person she cared about would surely rise again, dazzling like the stars.
Cheng Zhiwei hadn’t slept all night and woke with two large bags under her eyes. After washing up, she put on a coat and went downstairs, bare-faced.
Whether Zhou Lin was home or not, she always did this.
But today, Zhou Lin’s attitude was unusually kind. Seeing the bags under her eyes, he slightly furrowed his brows with a hint of concern, "Didn’t sleep well?"
Cheng Zhiwei often suffered from insomnia. She didn’t take any medicine last night, so naturally, she couldn’t sleep.
Head bowed, she couldn’t deny Zhou Lin’s concern.
After breakfast, Cheng Zhiwei went upstairs to change and came down to find Zhou Lin still there, neatly dressed and standing by the front door, his voice warm, "I’ll take you to see Zhang Yuanheng so he can prescribe you something."
Cheng Zhiwei changed her shoes and finally looked at Zhou Lin for the first time. She spoke steadily, "Zhou Lin, there’s no need for such pretense between us."
Their relationship had always been one of open animosity.
Zhou Lin’s gaze darkened and he lowered his eyes to meet her cool gaze, "You’ve always had trouble sleeping. Last time, Zhang Yuanheng mentioned that you should see him when you have time. He’ll prescribe something to help you regulate. It’s not good for your health to keep taking sleeping pills."
"I have things to do, maybe next time," Cheng Zhiwei replied as she walked outside. She would go by herself if needed; she didn’t want to go with Zhou Lin.
