Chapter 77: Chapter 77: Losing Your Legs and Failing to Get Zhou Lin, Are You Willing to Accept That?
Zhou Lin made good on his word.
Since Cheng Zhiwei refused to let Bai Zhuzhu off the hook, he targeted the people around her, starting with Meng Qiancheng.
As soon as the car arrived at the entrance of the police station, Cheng Zhiwei got out. The car hadn’t come to a complete stop, so she stumbled, nearly falling to the ground.
Once she made it up the steps, she took a deep breath to calm herself. The more panicked she was, the more disgraceful she appeared, and the more she provided onlookers with a spectacle.
She straightened her disheveled hair with her fingers before entering.
Zhou Lin and Seo Zhenzhen were both there.
Upon hearing her, both of them looked over in unison.
Zhou Lin’s eyes were frosty as he turned away indifferently and continued to speak with Secretary Zhang.
Seo Zhenzhen rolled over in her wheelchair with a faint smile, "Zhiwei, you’re here."
Cheng Zhiwei’s gaze was icy and sharp, her voice hoarse and cuttingly indifferent, "Seo Zhenzhen, he used to care for you wholeheartedly, and now you’re doing this to him. Don’t you think you’re being too venomous?"
Seo Zhenzhen maintained her calm smile, speaking in the most helpless tone, "Zhiwei, I don’t want this either, but my sister is locked up in the police station. I can’t just ignore her."
Cheng Zhiwei pursed her lips and, stepping past Seo Zhenzhen, prepared to go inside.
"Zhiwei, I’ve actually agreed with Madam Zhou that if Zhuzhu can be released, I’m willing to go abroad and never return. If you agree, Brother Qiancheng won’t get into trouble," Seo Zhenzhen sighed lightly. "You see, in reality, it’s you who have brought him this misfortune."
Cheng Zhiwei’s gaze carried a trace of scorn, "Seo Zhenzhen, are you really willing to leave? Having lost the use of your legs, and unable to have Zhou Lin, are you content?"
Cheng Zhiwei could easily guess what was on Seo Zhenzhen’s mind. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have foisted Bai Zhuzhu on Zhou Lin while she was out of the country.
It was all because she feared that Zhou Lin would forget her.
Seo Zhenzhen sighed softly, looking toward Zhou Lin with eyes brimming with affection, "I do like Ah Lin, but I would rather his wife be someone normal, not someone like me who can’t stand on her own feet."
Her voice was not low, especially when she said the word "disabled," which was heard by everyone present.
Zhou Lin’s icy gaze fell on Cheng Zhiwei, as if warning her not to bully Seo Zhenzhen.
Seo Zhenzhen curved her lips slightly, and said leisurely, "Just like you, Zhiwei, you like him so much. Staying by his side, you would surely take good care of him."
Cheng Zhiwei’s heart grew cold; she wasn’t sure if it was an illusion, but she always felt that there was an underlying meaning to Seo Zhenzhen’s words.
Seo Zhenzhen did not intend to continue speaking and instead expressed regret, "Once Brother Qiancheng is released, I will personally apologize to him."
She was certain that Cheng Zhiwei would save Meng Qiancheng.
"Zhenzhen, are we done talking?" Zhou Lin came over, his tone gentle, his palms resting on Seo Zhenzhen’s wheelchair, caressing it as if it were precious.
Cheng Zhiwei clenched her fists, suppressing the frustration in her heart, "Zhou Lin."
"Cheng Zhiwei, the police are looking for you. I suggest you tell the truth. After all, Zhang Yuanheng is an excellent witness," Zhou Lin interrupted her, pushing Seo Zhenzhen away to the other side.
Cheng Zhiwei swallowed the words she wanted to share with him; the police had already come over to ask her to sit down, inquiring, "Mr. Zhou says that Meng Qiancheng deliberately used the wrong medication during your treatment, is that true?"
Cheng Zhiwei lowered her gaze; her breathing grew heavy. Whether she admitted it or not, the incident would at the very least be classified as a medical error, with Zhang Yuanheng as the best witness.
The truth was that the wrong medication had been used, and with Zhou Lin’s manoeuvring behind the scenes, not only could Meng Qiancheng’s career be ruined, but he might even face prison time.
This routine questioning was nothing but Zhou Lin’s way of watching her struggle ineffectively.
But...
Zhiwei’s heart was in agony, but why, why couldn’t the one who was hurt speak the truth, why had the innocent to be implicated.
"Miss Cheng?" the patient police officer inquired, "What exactly happened, could you please explain to me in detail?"
Fingernails dug into the palm, the pain spreading to all her limbs.
Her head started to throb dully again.
"Please cooperate and tell us the truth about what happened," the police officer continued, "If something like this really did occur, we’ll take action against him according to the law, you can rest assured, we will protect your safety."
The policeman thought she was afraid of retaliation, hence her silence.
"No such thing happened," Cheng Zhiwei said, lifting her head with reddened eyes, in which deep sorrow dwelled, "They misunderstood."
"But..."
"There’s another matter, I want to withdraw my accusation against Bai Zhuzhu," the light in Cheng Zhiwei’s eyes slowly extinguished as she numbly uttered those words, "There has been some misunderstanding between us, she did not harm me."
She had resigned herself to her fate.
The police officer hesitated for a moment, "I wanted to ask..."
Cheng Zhiwei stood up, turned around to face Zhou Lin, her delicate features covered with profound sorrow, her gaze shifting several times before finally settling into darkness; she looked down with docile eyes, her voice exceptionally faint and low, "Are you satisfied now?"
Zhou Lin nodded at Secretary Zhang, who approached as the policeman was about to speak again. Secretary Zhang spoke first, "The matter is like this..."
How they conversed, Cheng Zhiwei didn’t know, she just stood there, feeling everything around her turning ethereal and insubstantial. Through her blurred vision, she saw Seo Zhenzhen shedding tears of joy while Zhou Lin tenderly comforted her, their affection intertwined.
Her heart hurt like a monster, suddenly striking, taking her down bite by bite.
Dragging her feet, Cheng Zhiwei walked out, passing by Seo Zhenzhen who displayed a grateful smile, "Thank you, Zhiwei, really, I can’t thank you enough."
Cheng Zhiwei looked straight ahead calmly, her voice rigid and lifeless, "Don’t mention it."
She walked past them and left the police station.
The autumn wind was soft and lingering.
Cheng Zhiwei felt cold, she tightened her jacket, her eyes somewhat vacant. She had mustered all her strength to demand a divorce, but now that drive had deflated, punctured by Zhou Lin himself.
Struggling to this point, she was covered with scars and pain, once thinking that the tables were finally turning.
But the vortex she thought she could escape from had opened its mouth wide and swallowed her again.
She was like a joke.
She didn’t know how long she had stood there when she heard a gloating voice, "Cheng Zhiwei, I thought you had the power to lock me away for good, turns out you’re not that capable after all."
Bai Zhuzhu had lost a lot of weight, looking unwell, but seeing the disoriented Cheng Zhiwei sparked life in her, she strode forward to Cheng Zhiwei unheedingly of Zhou Lin’s presence nearby and began to ridicule her.
"Zhuzhu," Seo Zhenzhen frowned lightly with a feigned helplessness, "you could get out this time thanks to Zhiwei taking it easy on you, you should thank her quickly."
Bai Zhuzhu crossed her arms and snorted arrogantly, "I got out because of Brother Lin’s effort, it’s got nothing to do with her."
"Zhuzhu," Seo Zhenzhen reproached in a low voice disapprovingly, but her feeble voice was just a mere show.
"Sister, she’s the one who made it so you could never hold your head up high again in this life, why defend her?" Bai Zhuzhu said with dissatisfaction, her chin uplifted, looking at Cheng Zhiwei with disdain.
