Chapter 74 No, He Agreed
Chapter 74: Chapter 74 No, He Agreed
Seo Zhenzhen placed her hands on the blanket over her knees, looking up at Zhou Lin with a gentle smile, touched with a hint of shyness, "I came to attend a friend’s wedding. Ah Lin found out and, worried about me being here alone, stayed by my side these past few days."
As she spoke, she paused, then sighed and turned towards Cheng Zhiwei, "Zhiwei, I’m sorry for monopolizing Ah Lin lately, but with Brother Qiancheng by your side, I was reassured."
It was just a few sentences, yet it was both a boast and a provocation.
Not just Cheng Zhiwei, even Guo Cuihua could tell, her gaze at Seo Zhenzhen filled with subtle meaning, feeling that this girl seemed vastly different from the obedient child she remembered.
She looked at Cheng Zhiwei with some concern.
Cheng Zhiwei, however, was composed, as if she hadn’t caught the insinuation in Seo Zhenzhen’s words, and simply responded, "That’s what he should be doing."
Zhou Lin’s expression darkened slightly.
Seo Zhenzhen was momentarily taken aback. She hadn’t expected Cheng Zhiwei to be so calm, especially since Bai Zhuzhu had told her about the incident at Sparkling Sky City and how Cheng Zhiwei was furiously upset when they used the master bedroom.
Her eyes darkened, and she spoke indifferently, "Ah Lin pities me. Zhiwei, I hope this doesn’t cause you any misunderstandings."
Cheng Zhiwei took out a water bottle and asked Guo Cuihua if she wanted a drink, blatantly ignoring Seo Zhenzhen.
Seo Zhenzhen sighed, her voice tender, "Ah Lin, let Secretary Zhang push me. You go and keep Auntie company, take care of her."
Her understanding and natural demeanor were as if she were Zhou Lin’s wife.
Zhou Lin nodded, handed the wheelchair over to Secretary Zhang, and walked over to Guo Cuihua, his attitude decent, "I’ve arranged a car. Once we land, it will take you directly to the hospital. Is that okay?"
Guo Cuihua drank some water and smiled, "Thank you for the trouble."
After that, she said no more.
Cheng Zhiwei was even less likely to engage with Zhou Lin, acting as if he didn’t exist.
Zhou Lin certainly had no desire to make idle chitchat, simply staying by their side until it was time to board the plane. He naturally took Guo Cuihua’s arm on the other side.
Guo Cuihua accepted it naturally, returning a grateful smile.
Everything seemed calm, so calm that Zhou Lin notably sensed Guo Cuihua’s distance.
Just as Zhou Lin had said, upon landing, a car was waiting to take Guo Cuihua to the hospital. Cheng Zhiwei naturally followed, but she hadn’t expected Zhou Lin to get in the car as well.
Through the car window, she saw Seo Zhenzhen being escorted into another car by Zhou Lin’s people and leaving.
She sneered softly, Zhou Lin really had everything arranged perfectly, accompanying his mother-in-law on one hand and ensuring his first love was taken care of on the other.
Her gesture was slight, but Zhou Lin noticed and felt uneasy. What was that expression for? He was even accompanying them to the hospital; could she still be dissatisfied?
Under the strange atmosphere, they arrived at the hospital. Zhang Yuanheng checked Guo Cuihua carefully, poured over her medical records again and again, and arranged for her to be admitted.
Only then did he reveal the sobering truth to Cheng Zhiwei and Zhou Lin in his office, "The outlook isn’t very optimistic."
Cheng Zhiwei’s heart sank sharply, her voice tinged with urgency, "What do you mean by not optimistic?"
Was it really going to be a problem for her to walk in the future?
Zhou Lin frowned, "It can’t be cured?"
Zhang Yuanheng passed the medical records to Cheng Zhiwei, knowing they misunderstood, and hurriedly explained, "It’s not what you think. What I mean is, walking will be fine, but running, jumping, and such activities will no longer be possible."
Essentially, her leg nerves had been affected. The doctors had said that once the nerves were damaged, walking wouldn’t be as easy as it is for the average person, but being told by Zhang Yuanheng that she would be able to walk was a tremendous relief for Cheng Zhiwei.
She simply couldn’t imagine Guo Cuihua walking with a cane.
"Thank you." She expressed her gratitude with a hint of sincerity.
Zhang Yuanheng felt a bit embarrassed and added another remark, "If the treatment had been accepted earlier, such a big problem wouldn’t have arisen."
As soon as he finished speaking, the atmosphere in the office instantaneously turned somber.
Zhou Lin subconsciously looked at Cheng Zhiwei, thinking of the day she questioned him, a strange emotion flowed through his chest.
Cheng Zhiwei, however, remained calm, "Then I’ll trouble you."
"Ah." Zhang Yuanheng agreed, "You sit, I’ll go check the pharmacy."
He sensed something was off with the atmosphere, especially Zhou Lin’s unpleasant expression. Feeling overwhelmed, he found an excuse and slipped away.
Cheng Zhiwei took steps to leave, planning to go see Guo Cuihua.
"Cheng Zhiwei." Zhou Lin’s voice was heavy in the silent office, "I’ll arrange for someone to take care of Mom, you..."
"You needn’t bother," Cheng Zhiwei curtly interrupted him without turning back, "I think it’s better if we each take care of our own matters. Of course, I thank you for bringing us back and arranging the hospital."
Her words were not meant to be sarcastic, yet they were far from pleasant to hear.
From Zhou Lin’s perspective, he could only see Cheng Zhiwei’s slender shoulders, her long hair tied into a ponytail, neat yet full of distance and coldness.
He remembered that when they were in Sparkling Sky City, she loved to let her hair down over her shoulders, her waist-length hair, soft and beautiful.
No, it was since she was little that she didn’t seem to like tying her hair up. When she had to, she would seem uncomfortable, always pulling at it until her hair was about to come loose.
Such a vague image was wholly incongruent with the Cheng Zhiwei before him.
He wanted to speak up, but Cheng Zhiwei had already left the office.
The silent air became oppressive now that only one person remained.
He wanted to say, since she knew he brought them back and arranged the hospital, shouldn’t she be grateful?
Being prickly like a hedgehog, always on the defense, was rather petty.
It truly didn’t make one happy.
Cheng Zhiwei went to the ward and, reaching the door, heard Lin Yu’s voice, "Cuihua, you’ve really suffered on this trip."
So she didn’t go in.
In the ward, Guo Cuihua didn’t exchange pleasantries for long before bringing up Cheng Zhiwei’s intention to divorce. At the end, she said, "Looking back, it’s a good thing that the wedding wasn’t lavishly celebrated; even if they divorce, not many people know about it, minimizing the impact on both families."
"You support their divorce too?" Lin Yu exclaimed in shock, then cursed Zhou Lin angrily, "Ah Lin really did Zhiwei wrong."
"Three years haven’t fostered any affection between them. I think it’s better if they divorce," said Guo Cuihua without blaming Zhou Lin or mentioning Seo Zhenzhen, but Lin Yu understood clearly.
After talking a little more and fearing she might impede Guo Cuihua’s rest, Lin Yu left the ward. She ran into Cheng Zhiwei right at the door.
Lin Yu knew Cheng Zhiwei must have heard everything she and Guo Cuihua had discussed but she tried to salvage her son’s failing marriage anyway.
"I’ve already spoken to Ah Lin, told him to send Seo Zhenzhen abroad for continued treatment."
Cheng Zhiwei could guess without thinking: "He won’t agree."
"No, he agreed." Unexpectedly, Lin Yu offered an answer that Cheng Zhiwei didn’t anticipate.
