Chapter 71: Chapter 71: Then You Shouldn’t Meet with Meng Qiancheng Anymore
Cheng Zhiwei’s coldness was crystal clear to Zhou Lin today, but the young master, who grew up in privilege, had become the president of Zhou Group, and he was not about to retreat because of Cheng Zhiwei’s icy demeanor.
He walked in, his tone indifferent, "Mom has already woken up."
The implication was that Cheng Zhiwei had no reason to stop him anymore.
Cheng Zhiwei didn’t stop him; if he really wanted to enter, what could she do? She couldn’t throw a tantrum, and besides, she had already expressed her desire to divorce Zhou Lin to Guo Cuihua, who was supportive of it.
So, whether she stopped him or not wasn’t a big issue.
Zhou Lin entered the hospital room smoothly, placed the fruit basket down, and respectfully greeted, "Mom."
Guo Cuihua said with a smile, "Ah Lin is here."
She did not ask Zhou Lin why he left that day, nor what the reason was for his departure.
Zhou Lin said, "I’ve arranged a plane; we’ll transfer back to Yucheng District this afternoon. The medical care there is advanced; I assume there won’t be any major problems."
He was completely the image of a good son-in-law.
However, the consecutive incidents made Guo Cuihua no longer regard Zhou Lin as her son-in-law, but more like a younger member of a friend’s family, thus her words were exceptionally polite.
"The doctor says the venom from the snake that bit me isn’t very strong. A few more days of injections and I should be fine, so there’s no need to trouble you. If you’re busy, you can go back to Yucheng first. Having Zhiwei here with me is enough."
In just a few sentences, Zhou Lin could tell something was off.
He glanced at Cheng Zhiwei, who was busy sending a message on her phone, the corner of her mouth lifted in a smile.
It was irritating to the eyes.
With a faint withdrawal of his gaze, Zhou Lin neatly reined in the emotions that had briefly escaped, "Mom, I was at fault that day. I shouldn’t have left early, but as soon as I finished what needed to be done, I came right over."
He explained once more, something that would have been unthinkable in the past.
Guo Cuihua’s smile was still benevolent, "Ah Lin, this incident was an accident, I don’t blame you. Don’t take it to heart. I was just thinking that you’re busy and I am not seriously harmed, so I didn’t want to delay your work."
Her words were discernibly distant, one by one.
Zhou Lin was silent, the atmosphere oppressively heavy for a moment. In his mind, he recalled the earlier question from Guo Cuihua asking whether Meng Qiancheng had arrived—the familiarity and the laughter that came with it—starkly different from her current attitude towards him.
"Zhiwei, see Ah Lin out," Guo Cuihua said tactfully, effectively asking him to leave.
Cheng Zhiwei stuffed her phone into her pocket and looked at Zhou Lin, "Let’s go, I’ll walk you out."
Zhou Lin stood tall, a trace of indifference evident. His lips pressed into a straight line, he said politely, "Please rest well."
After speaking, he turned and left.
Cheng Zhiwei followed behind him to the elevator. While waiting, Zhou Lin saw through the reflection on the elevator doors that Cheng Zhiwei had taken her phone out again, her fingers dancing across the screen, chatting with someone. Her gentle expression was blurry yet vividly registered in his mind.
With whom?
It was obvious to think of Meng Qiancheng.
A surge of thin anger enveloped his heart instantly, and by the time he realized it, he had already dragged Cheng Zhiwei into the stairwell.
Cheng Zhiwei looked at him with a touch of annoyance, her voice stern, "What do you think you’re doing?"
Good, she was finally not looking at her phone anymore.
Zhou Lin let go of her, lit a cigarette, and his narrow eyes stared at Cheng Zhiwei through the smoke with a cool scrutiny, "Cheng Zhiwei, haven’t I warned you to stay away from Meng Qiancheng?"
Cheng Zhiwei brushed her flowing hair aside, looked at Zhou Lin’s tense jawline, then averted her gaze, her voice cold and flat, "I remember, you promised me we would go our separate ways."
So who she associated with was none of his business.
Zhou Lin’s face darkened with a chill that emanated sharply from every angle, "Are you determined to go against me?"
Exhaustion surrounding her from all sides, Cheng Zhiwei’s inner fury suddenly extinguished. She looked at Zhou Lin with a calm, almost stubborn gaze, "Zhou Lin, look into your heart and ask yourself, I never wanted to go against you."
"Then stop seeing Meng Qiancheng," Zhou Lin’s eyebrows frosted with cold disdain and aloofness.
"I can’t do that."
These four words slipped out.
Cheng Zhiwei paused and softened her sharp edges, "Give me a reason."
"A reason?" Zhou Lin scoffed disbelievingly, "He almost ruined your voice, isn’t that reason enough?"
Cheng Zhiwei shook her head, "It was just a common medical accident."
Zhou Lin was so enraged by her words, "Such a ’medical accident,’ if it happened on any other day, would get him fired or even have his license revoked. Cheng Zhiwei, you’re defending a murderer."
The angrier he became, the calmer Cheng Zhiwei felt.
She looked at Zhou Lin with a mild indifference, "I thought you should understand my feelings. After all, when Bai Zhuzhu targeted and even hurt me time after time, you trusted her unconditionally. So, what are you angry about now?"
It was just giving him a taste of his own medicine.
"So, are you taking revenge on me?" Zhou Lin’s eyes bore a sharp, chilling gleam.
"How dare I harbor such thoughts. I just want to divorce you," Cheng Zhiwei said with a soft laugh, "Look, Seo Zhenzhen is back. For her, you were ready to give up everything and return to Yucheng while I... I just want a peaceful life."
"Let’s divorce, Zhou Lin. Let us free each other. After that, who I get close to and befriend won’t affect you at all, and you can be with Seo Zhenzhen, completing your life."
Cheng Zhiwei felt she had clearly articulated the two greatest benefits of divorce, which would have had any normal person quickly agree to it.
But Zhou Lin was clearly not a normal person.
He smirked sarcastically, squinting at the bright face of Cheng Zhiwei, "Are you so eager to divorce and be with him?"
"It has nothing to do with him."
Zhou Lin stubbed out his cigarette, took a step forward, prompting Cheng Zhiwei to immediately take a step back; however, she was against the wall, with no retreat, her back hitting the wall.
A waft of tobacco enveloped her.
Zhou Lin’s eyes were right in front of her, so close she could almost count his lashes.
"You complain about how badly Bai Zhuzhu treated you, isn’t it just to highlight how good Meng Qiancheng is to you, then smoothly transition to a divorce and be with him?" Zhou Lin glared at Cheng Zhiwei, his dark eyes icy cold, "Don’t even think about it."
Cheng Zhiwei’s composure burst in an instant; she shoved Zhou Lin away fiercely, her eyes quickly reddening, "Zhou Lin, are you sick? Your girlfriend’s back, yet you refuse to divorce—what are you trying to achieve?"
Zhou Lin hit the railing with his back, a flash of pain causing him to frown, yet he responded with a smirk that was not quite a smile, "Are you jealous?"
Cheng Zhiwei felt like she might explode from anger the next second.
She was jealous of nothing.
All she wanted was to divorce right here and now.
