Chapter 69: Chapter 69 What is the most guilty thing Miss Cheng has ever done?
The soon-to-be bride and groom quickly returned, and Cheng Zhiwei soon noticed a change in the way they looked at her.
The bride-to-be’s gaze was cold, and the groom-to-be glanced at Meng Qiancheng from time to time with a worried expression on his face.
Cheng Zhiwei guessed that he might think Meng Qiancheng had been deceived by her.
Dinner was nearly over when everyone suggested playing Truth or Dare, an activity originally intended for the bride and groom to ask questions about their relationship, create an atmosphere, and deepen their love for one another.
Cheng Zhiwei was disinterested, so when her name was called, she was somewhat bewildered.
The bride-to-be asked with a deep smile, "Miss Cheng, what is the most guilt-inducing thing you’ve ever done in your life?"
All conversation ceased, and all eyes settled on the bride-to-be and Cheng Zhiwei. Once the question was asked, everyone sensed something amiss.
Cheng Zhiwei looked towards Seo Zhenzhen with a piercingly cold gaze, and Seo Zhenzhen immediately turned to look at the bride-to-be, "Hui’er..."
The bride-to-be playfully stuck out her tongue, picked up her wine glass with a mischievous smile and said, "What’s wrong? Miss Cheng, you dare not say? Then drink?"
Meng Qiancheng frowned, his expression indifferent as he glanced at the groom-to-be, "I’ll drink for her."
"What’s the rush, Meng Qiancheng?" the bride-to-be said deliberately, "It’s just a game. Look at you, all protective. I’m merely trying to vet Miss Cheng for you, to see if she’s hiding anything from you."
"You’re overstepping," Meng Qiancheng said, his face darkening.
"Hui’er, forget it," Seo Zhenzhen urged anxiously.
The more Seo Zhenzhen rushed, the more attention she drew. The guests, recalling her wheelchair-bound appearance and then looking at Cheng Zhiwei, suddenly had curious expressions.
"Miss Cheng?"
"I haven’t done anything to feel guilty about," Cheng Zhiwei declared, lifting her head. Her clear eyes were steady as she looked at Zhou Lin.
Zhou Lin leaned back in his chair, resting one hand on the back of Seo Zhenzhen’s chair. At a glance, he seemed to be resting it on Seo Zhenzhen’s shoulder instead.
An elegant and noble man with an indifferent aura.
As Cheng Zhiwei faced her ordeal, he chose to remain indifferent. Perhaps, he thought this was what Cheng Zhiwei deserved, since this was a moment to defend Seo Zhenzhen’s honor. It was decent of him not to join in the criticism.
The bride-to-be wore a mocking smile, and with a "bang," her wine glass hit the table. She lifted her chin, a trace of contempt seeping out, "Miss Cheng really knows how to lie with her eyes open. Zhenzhen is sitting right here, how can you say you’ve ’never done’ such things?"
"Stop talking," Meng Qiancheng grasped Cheng Zhiwei’s hand.
Her fingers were icy cold, a clear sign that despite her calm appearance, she was deeply chilled to the heart.
"Meng Qiancheng, you’re defending her, but do you know what she..."
"That’s enough." A displeased voice tinged with coldness rose, silencing all the whispering.
Zhou Lin leisurely wiped his fingers with a napkin, tossed it onto the table casually, his features tense, and his gaze heavy as he swept across everyone present. Finally, it rested on the bride-to-be’s face, his lips curling up with a chilly note in his voice.
"Is this game about digging up others’ dark secrets? Why don’t you first tell everyone how many boyfriends you’ve had or how many men you’ve slept with?"
The question was blunt and unsparing.
The bride-to-be turned pale with anger, "You..."
She looked at Seo Zhenzhen, "Zhenzhen."
Seo Zhenzhen sighed and shook her head, her voice gentle and considerate, "Today is a day for joy and happiness, so let’s not bring up such distasteful matters, okay?"
Seeing the pleading look in her eyes, the bride-to-be glared at Cheng Zhiwei resentfully before ultimately letting it go.
And just like that, the unpleasantness was dissolved.
But Cheng Zhiwei could no longer stay. She whispered to Meng Qiancheng, "I’m leaving first."
Meng Qiancheng grabbed his coat, "I’ll take you back."
"Okay."
The two of them walked out one after the other, with Meng Qiancheng quickening his pace to drape the coat over Cheng Zhiwei’s shoulders, protectively holding her, full of care.
Zhou Lin’s face darkened like black ink. He had just undone her shawl, and now she was turning around and leaving with Meng Qiancheng?
Seo Zhenzhen’s gaze swept over, noticing his knuckles turning white as he forcefully suppressed his emotions, slightly averting his eyes.
Outside, the bride-to-be caught up, apologetically saying, "Qiancheng, I’m really sorry."
After pausing to think, she pulled Meng Qiancheng aside and spoke in a low voice, "I heard from Hui’er that this Cheng Zhiwei is not a good person. She was the reason Seo Zhenzhen broke her leg. You and her..."
Meng Qiancheng became angry, raising his voice, "I know exactly what kind of person she is, and it’s not what you all think." He paused, then sighed softly, "That incident was an accident, and she didn’t mean for it to happen."
The groom was taken aback, "Really? That actually happened?"
Meng Qiancheng patted his shoulder, "Go back inside, don’t let us spoil the mood today."
"Alright, I’ll invite you to dinner separately next time."
Sitting in the car with the windows closed, Cheng Zhiwei didn’t know what Meng Qiancheng had said to the groom, but she could guess it was probably about those matters. She didn’t take it to heart.
After a while, Meng Qiancheng got in the car, his tone gentle, "Are you full? Shall I take you to eat something else?"
"No need, take me to the hospital," Cheng Zhiwei said, wanting to accompany Guo Cuihua. She only felt at peace by her mother’s side.
Meng Qiancheng agreed and drove to the hospital, "I’m really sorry about today. I didn’t expect his wife to know Seo Zhenzhen and for you to feel wronged."
"I’m fine," Cheng Zhiwei replied lightly with a faint smile, "Really."
"However, I didn’t expect Zhou Lin to speak up for you," Meng Qiancheng said casually, "Could it be that he has feelings for you?"
Cheng Zhiwei looked out the window. The small county town was nothing like a big city. At this time, there were very few people and cars on the street, only the street lights shining solitarily.
Watching those lonely beams of light, her voice was slightly cold, "It’s not for me. He did it for Seo Zhenzhen. If Seo Zhenzhen could come, she must be a very good friend of his. If a real fuss had broken out, it would have been a bad look for them."
She saw the situation very clearly, so she felt no stirrings of the heart from Zhou Lin’s intervention.
Meng Qiancheng breathed a sigh of relief, "It’s for the best that you see things clearly. I was really afraid you’d be moved by him and then hurt again. Our Weiwei has truly grown up."
Cheng Zhiwei smiled, having gone through so much, her heart had long since become more expansive.
At the hospital, Cheng Zhiwei insisted on staying to take care of Guo Cuihua, letting Cheng Shang rest. Cheng Shang, in fact, wasn’t too keen on Cheng Zhiwei spending time with Meng Qiancheng, so he simply agreed and went to the hotel with Meng Qiancheng.
Cheng Zhiwei wiped Guo Cuihua’s hands and body, taking care of her meticulously. Guo Cuihua watched her quietly until she had finished, then spoke softly, "Zhiwei, come lie next to Mom, let’s have a mother-daughter chat."
Since Cheng Zhiwei married Zhou Lin, due to Cheng Shang’s influence, she seldom returned home or contacted her family. Guo Cuihua also feared that visiting her would displease Zhou Lin, so she rarely asked about Cheng Zhiwei’s situation.
This was probably the most intimate they had been in three years.
