Chapter 68: Chapter 68 She Pretends Not to Hear and Doesn’t Bother with It
Guo Cuihua said, "The doctor said it’s nothing serious, so I won’t move. It’s boring for Zhiwei to take care of me alone. Qiancheng, you’re going to the wedding banquet, so take her with you to get some air."
Meng Qiancheng naturally agreed, "No problem, I just happen to be without a date."
Guo Cuihua also reminded Cheng Zhiwei to stay with Meng Qiancheng and not to wander off.
"I know, I know, just rest well. I won’t go anywhere, I’ll just stay here to take care of you." Cheng Zhiwei didn’t want to go anywhere else, she wanted to stay and take care of Guo Cuihua.
"With your dad here, what could happen to me?" Guo Cuihua waved her hand to tell Cheng Zhiwei to rest, "You’ve watched over me all night, go find a hotel to take a shower and stay for the night. Also, your suitcase is already on its way here."
"Mom."
"Qiancheng, could you please look after her for me and let her get some rest?" Guo Cuihua simply handed the task over to Qiancheng.
"Don’t worry, Auntie," said Meng Qiancheng with a smile as he briskly pulled Cheng Zhiwei away.
Once they had left, Cheng Shang frowned and said, "What are you doing? Zhiwei is married, after all. It’s not proper for a man and a woman to be together like this."
Guo Cuihua snorted coldly, "Does it make a difference whether she’s married or not? Besides, it’s my own daughter, and of course, I want what’s best for her. Zhou Lin didn’t take her to heart, so I’ll find someone who truly cares for her."
Nobody mentioned yesterday’s incident, but that didn’t mean it bothered no one.
The more Guo Cuihua thought about it, the colder her expression became, "You care about reputation, but I hope Zhiwei can meet a man who will take care of her and love her. Qiancheng is also someone we watched grow up, we know him through and through, he’s much better than Zhou Lin."
"Foolish," Cheng Shang did not agree with this view, but Guo Cuihua was weak at the moment, and he still felt sorry for his wife, so he didn’t start an argument.
Cheng Zhiwei was forcibly taken by Meng Qiancheng to the hotel where he was staying, and he got her a room to rest in.
Cheng Zhiwei was indeed exhausted and without demur, she took a shower and slept through without waking.
When she woke up, it was already dark outside. She climbed out of bed bewildered, tidied up her hair, hurriedly washed up, and then called Guo Cuihua, telling her to hang in there and that she would bring dinner over right away,
"Qiancheng has already delivered it, you don’t need to come over," said Guo Cuihua gratefully, "Qiancheng has really grown up, he knows how to take care of people."
Cheng Zhiwei, with a mouth full of toothpaste, mumbled, "Then I’ll come over."
"No need, Qiancheng said there’s a gathering tonight and he’s taking you. I’ve agreed, so you should go with him and dress up nicely." Guo Cuihua gave her instructions and promptly hung up the phone.
Cheng Zhiwei didn’t even have the chance to refuse.
Just as she had tied her hair into a ponytail, the doorbell rang. Meng Qiancheng stood outside, holding a suitcase, "Your luggage."
"Thank you," said Cheng Zhiwei as she stepped aside to let him in.
Meng Qiancheng helped her move the suitcase into the room, "My old classmate has organized a small gathering. I’m taking you there for some delicious food."
"I..."
"I’ve already asked for leave on your behalf, don’t worry."
Cheng Zhiwei had no choice but to agree.
After applying light makeup, she followed Meng Qiancheng to the gathering.
Meng Qiancheng’s classmate was someone he met while studying abroad. After returning to China, he settled in An City. Now that he was back in his hometown to get married and host a wedding banquet, many friends and classmates came, so they thought of having a get-together to liven things up.
When Meng Qiancheng arrived with Cheng Zhiwei, there were already quite a few people in the private room. The air conditioning was on, and Meng Qiancheng took off his coat and likewise took Cheng Zhiwei’s to put away.
Some joked that Meng Qiancheng was a flowering iron tree, finally finding a girl he admired. Cheng Zhiwei wanted to explain, but Meng Qiancheng cut her off, "This is my sister Zhiwei, don’t tease her."
"We know, we know, a sister of course," someone joked in response.
Cheng Zhiwei sat quietly and didn’t bother explaining any further, considering they were mostly strangers she rarely encountered.
A group of men sat together, talking business and matters of society. Cheng Zhiwei silently ate, her bowl periodically receiving various dishes, even peeled shrimp.
Although Meng Qiancheng was conversing with others, his thoughtful care for Cheng Zhiwei never ceased.
Several women cast envious glances, as the men beside them seldom paid them such continuous attention.
Cheng Zhiwei pretended not to notice and ate leisurely.
She had a simple bowl of noodles for breakfast yesterday, and after the incident with Guo Cuihua, she had only grabbed a few bites in the morning. She was indeed hungry now.
At that moment, the bride-to-be stood up, asking everyone to make room as she added two more chairs, "I have two friends coming, please squeeze a bit, I’m sorry."
In such gatherings, naturally, the more people, the merrier, and two spots were quickly made available.
After ten minutes, the bride-to-be hurried out with her phone and soon brought two people back in.
Cheng Zhiwei followed everyone else’s gaze and saw Zhou Lin and Seo Zhenzhen.
Seo Zhenzhen sat in a wheelchair, pushed by Zhou Lin, the pair dressed elegantly—she in a white gown and he in a black suit, exuding an air of a debonair couple.
A sharp pain struck her chest. Cheng Zhiwei clenched her chopsticks. Zhou Lin had said yesterday that Seo Zhenzhen was in trouble, rushing back as if she was on her deathbed, yet today, he appeared here with Seo Zhenzhen, unapologetically, without any sense of impropriety.
Zhou Lin lifted Seo Zhenzhen into a chair before sitting down beside her.
The bride-to-be introduced them, "This is my good friend Seo Zhenzhen and her boyfriend Zhou Lin, who came all the way from Yucheng to attend my wedding. Please get to know them."
Cheng Zhiwei lowered her eyes with a sarcastic twist of her lips—boyfriend?
Well, indeed, she was Zhou Lin’s wife, Seo Zhenzhen his girlfriend; it seemed plausible. But didn’t Seo Zhenzhen feel like a mistress?
Everyone was beaming with friendly smiles at Zhou Lin and Seo Zhenzhen, except for Cheng Zhiwei and Meng Qiancheng. Cheng Zhiwei quietly ate her food, while Meng Qiancheng served her soup, somehow out of place with the current atmosphere.
Someone teased, "Look at these two loving couples, tsk tsk, making us feel like third wheels."
"Yeah, pity us single dogs. We came here to be fed dog food, and now we’ve been served an extra two bowls."
"Absolutely, we are too pitiful."
In the midst of the teasing, Zhou Lin naturally saw Cheng Zhiwei, and turning to look at Meng Qiancheng beside her, his face darkened in an instant.
Seo Zhenzhen spoke in surprise, "Zhiwei, Brother Qiancheng?"
Cheng Zhiwei acted as if she hadn’t heard. She felt Zhou Lin’s gaze but didn’t see the need to care anymore.
After all, he appeared her with Seo Zhenzhen and did not object to being called her boyfriend, which explained everything.
Meng Qiancheng nodded politely, his smile faint.
"You know each other?" The bride-to-be was shocked, looking from one to the other before her expression changed, "Zhiwei, could it be..."
She grabbed the groom-to-be’s arm and pulled him outside.
