Chapter 64: Chapter 64: What is needed is an opportunity to be independent and support oneself
Zhou Lin couldn’t stand her subtle gestures towards Xu Tian and sneered mockingly, "Not talking now, are you? Learning to protect your throat, or just afraid of becoming mute?"
Xu Tian immediately turned her head and glared at him, "Is it because Zhou Lin threatened you that you’re so desperate to finish recording the song?"
Young President Zhou couldn’t tolerate this injustice, and sneered right back, "It was her own choice to go."
"That must be because you’re scheming again to give this opportunity to that bitch Bai Zhuzhu."
"And where do you stand, knowing that she’s not feeling well yet still taking her to the recording studio? Are you hoping she goes mute, so that you and He Ye can be together without any objections?"
As soon as the words were spoken, the room fell silent.
Cheng Zhiwei suddenly stood up, ignoring the severe pain in her throat, and pushed Zhou Lin away, "What nonsense are you spouting?"
Xu Tian’s face turned pale, while He Ye glanced at Xu Tian before shifting his gaze away.
Zhou Lin twirled his car keys, his smile taking on a slightly malicious edge, "Why don’t you ask your dear friend how she pushed you out just to please a man."
Cheng Zhiwei wanted to say something else, when Xu Tian suddenly tugged at her clothes, her tone filled with sorrow and guilt, "Xiao Yueyue, I’m sorry, I..."
"It’s okay." Cheng Zhiwei cut her off, her voice full of trust, "You’ve done nothing to be sorry for, you just knew I needed this opportunity, a chance for independence, to support myself."
It was Xu Tian who really knew what she wanted.
If she truly had ulterior motives, she would’ve kept it a secret when He Ye first made contact. Cheng Zhiwei was very clear about that.
Feeling a tightness in his chest, Zhou Lin suddenly realized that Cheng Zhiwei trusted everyone but him, even though they, like him, had all lied to her.
She really knew how to play favoritism.
"Thank you, Zhiwei." Xu Tian was both guilty and grateful, guilty for indeed having had some selfish thoughts initially, and grateful for Cheng Zhiwei’s understanding.
Zhang Yuanheng said, "Let’s leave the talking for later, treatment comes first."
He Ye turned to Xu Tian, "Come out with me for a minute."
Xu Tian followed him out.
Zhou Lin found a seat at random, watching Zhang Yuanheng prepare the medicine for Cheng Zhiwei and administering the treatment.
After Xu Tian and He Ye left, they didn’t come back, so Cheng Zhiwei sent a text to ask.
Xu Tian replied:[He rejected me.]
Such a brief message, laden with unspeakable bitterness.
Cheng Zhiwei wanted to say she wouldn’t go to He Ye’s studio, but then Xu Tian sent another message: [Business is business, and personal is personal. My liking him and his invitation for you to join his studio are two different matters. Please don’t turn it down.]
The true meaning of friendship shone brightly in that moment.
Xu Tian had guessed Cheng Zhiwei’s thoughts.
Cheng Zhiwei’s heart warmed. Another message from Xu Tian came: [I know you don’t have romantic feelings for him, so I won’t give up. That’s why, Zhiwei, you must join his studio, and then I’ll have a reason to see him. Please.]
The words "I reject him" in the input box were ultimately not sent. Instead, she sent a single word, "Okay."
Zhou Lin sat across from her, watching Cheng Zhiwei looking down at her phone with a smile, a gentle and serene expression he hadn’t seen in a long time.
The Cheng Zhiwei of the past always had her eyes on him whenever he was around, but now, sitting right across from her, he felt ignored, sparking a sudden sense of imbalance within him.
He spoke slowly, "The noon flight will get you to An City by the afternoon."
Cheng Zhiwei’s cool gaze suddenly widened.
An City?
An City was in the Northwest, the city where Cheng Zhiwei’s parents had gone.
She pinched the center of her palm, somewhat in disbelief as she looked at Zhou Lin. Was he really going to take her to An City to find her parents?
Zhou Lin was pleased. Finally, her attention was on him.
"Don’t want to go?" he deliberately said.
But Cheng Zhiwei’s expression did not become as anxious as he had hoped; instead, it regained its calmness, her voice hoarse with intensity.
"I will go by myself."
She would not ask for his help.
Moreover, her parents were about to return soon. She could also wait here for them to come home.
However, Zhou Lin’s next words made her realize how naive she had been.
"There are handovers to be done there, and the documents are with me," Zhou Lin said, comfortably leaning back on the sofa, legs crossed, idly spinning the car keys on his fingertips, leisurely watching Cheng Zhiwei.
Cheng Zhiwei bit her lip, fingers clenched, breathing slightly quicker, "You did this on purpose."
"You don’t have to go," Zhou Lin said with a casual smile, clearly having her at a disadvantage, yet deliberately saying such a thing.
Forced into submission, Cheng Zhiwei lowered her head, looking at the tips of her shoes, her voice steady, "I understand."
But upon listening closely, one could hear the restrained forbearance in her tone.
At this moment, Zhou Lin did not realize how much harm his actions had caused Cheng Zhiwei, making her feel suffocated because of him at times.
Zhang Yuanheng prescribed new medication and reminded her of many things to be mindful of. Cheng Zhiwei followed Zhou Lin to the airport.
Wang Mei had already packed Cheng Zhiwei’s things and delivered them to the airport.
Cheng Zhiwei sat in the VIP room for a while before it sank in that she was indeed going to pick up her parents, eager to call Guo Cuihua, but no one answered.
Perhaps they were busy.
Thinking this, she sent a message and then turned off her phone and put it away.
Looking out through the glass, she could see Zhou Lin on the phone, his expression gentle, softly coaxing someone.
Cheng Zhiwei withdrew her gaze indifferently, figuring he was explaining to Seo Zhenzhen why he had to go to An City, or perhaps, keeping it from her by saying he was on a business trip.
Her expression turning bleak, Cheng Zhiwei twisted her fingers, realizing Zhou Lin’s considerate arrangements were just to make her give in and forgive Bai Zhuzhu again.
Knowing his motives, she was no longer moved by anything he did.
By the time they arrived in An City, it was already 5 pm; someone picked them up, and they went straight to where Cheng Shang and his wife were staying.
It was a remote little town with rough roads that jostled them all night before they arrived.
The only lodgings were a rented house for the students and teachers, crowded with many occupants. After much shifting, a room was freed up for them.
The walls, due to constant humidity, were covered with black mold spots, and the air was stale. Fortunately, the bed was fairly large and there were enough blankets to make it habitable.
But aside from a bed, the room was devoid of any furniture.
Cheng Zhiwei placed the pillow in the middle of the bed and said indifferently, "You sleep on that side, I’ll sleep on this side."
The nights in the mountain areas were very cold, and sleeping on the floor would be torture; moreover, they did not have extra blankets for that.
Cheng Zhiwei was open-minded and made do.
After a simple wash-up, Cheng Zhiwei changed into a clean jacket and lay down on one side, still dressed. Zhou Lin snorted sarcastically, lay down on the other side, and the distance between them was wide enough to fit two more people.
Neither of them wanted to get any closer.
