Chapter 374: Chapter 374: Then Let Him Do as They Wish
He Ye didn’t believe it.
He couldn’t believe that Cheng Zhiwei would reconcile with Zhou Lin; she wasn’t the type to return to a past relationship.
His throat was so dry it hurt, and He Ye felt extremely uncomfortable.
He took a few steps forward, wanting to pull Cheng Zhiwei aside, he wanted to talk to Cheng Zhiwei alone.
But just as he reached out his hand, Zhou Lin pushed it away.
Darkness spread from the bottom of his eyes, Zhou Lin’s face was expressionless, and he stood entirely in front of Cheng Zhiwei.
He Ye’s expression momentarily turned fierce and gloomy, "Zhou Lin, you have no right to control her."
"Do you have the right?" Zhou Lin sneered, his harsh, merciless words flowed effortlessly, "A loser who can’t even propose properly?"
He Ye’s face turned pale; Zhou Lin was stating the facts.
He had been overjoyed about proposing, but he ended up making Cheng Zhiwei a laughingstock.
He indeed was a loser.
But even as a loser, his heart was true.
"Zhiwei." He Ye called out her name somewhat excitedly, his gaze shifting to Zhou Lin.
His typically gentle demeanor now carried a sharp edge, "Zhou Lin, even if I did her wrong, it doesn’t give you the right to criticize and instruct me."
He knew Cheng Zhiwei, and Zhou Lin must have threatened her again.
"But she’s standing by my side now, if you have what it takes, surpass me," Zhou Lin taunted, his lips curling up maliciously, not taking He Ye seriously at all, "Come talk like this when you have the strength and standing to challenge me."
"Otherwise, you’ll just be looked down upon."
He Ye clenched his fists, his gaze tinged with sorrow, "Zhiwei."
How he wished Cheng Zhiwei would choose to stand by him.
But Zhou Lin was like a bully.
He lit a cigarette, leisurely smoking, and said, "Stop calling her; what do you think this is, playing house? You think she’ll come to you just by calling her name?"
He leisurely added, "She’s too scared."
"It really was you who threatened her," He Ye’s face turned a livid blue.
Cheng Zhiwei was about to speak when Zhou Lin grabbed her shoulder and pushed her back, the smoke swirling around: "So what if I threatened her, and then? What can you do?"
His tone was scornful and his attitude condescending, a clear provocation.
He didn’t take He Ye seriously at all.
"That’s why I said, you’re a powerless loser. Even if the two of you ended up together, you couldn’t protect her." Zhou Lin sneered, "Naive."
Cheng Zhiwei lowered her gaze behind Zhou Lin; his words were harsh, but for some reason, she heard not just an attack on He Ye, but also a sort of encouragement.
That’s why she had remained quiet.
Until then, she felt it was enough, and took the initiative to say, "Senior, we really aren’t suitable."
"I will try harder."
Cheng Zhiwei shook her head, "Trying harder is useless. You see, being powerless just makes one a subject to others’ whims, and I’ve had enough."
She closed her eyes, suppressing her unwillingness to hurt him further, her expression grew colder, "Senior, you are only suited to be with a compliant, gentle woman, not someone like me who’s troublesome at every turn."
"I don’t care about that," He Ye said urgently.
"But I do," Cheng Zhiwei interrupted him, "You can’t give me the life I want."
She decisively turned around and left.
He Ye instinctively tried to follow her but was harshly pushed away by Zhou Lin, causing him to stumble and stand awkwardly.
Zhou Lin grabbed his collar, his expression fierce and gloomy, "She’s my woman and my child, did you really think I’d let you have them?"
He Ye struggled to breathe, his face reddening.
Zhou Lin continued, "It was just to let her see how useless everyone else is, to let her know who her best choice is. Did you really think you could compare to me?"
After saying that, he casually released him, his eyes scouring He Ye with disdain, "You’re such a loser, you don’t even deserve to be my rival."
After dropping those words, he turned and left.
He Ye stood under the streetlight, his face gradually losing its red flush, turning extremely pale.
His fingers were clenched tightly, as if holding a fire.
Wanting to vent, but having nowhere to do so.
Finally, he slumped down on a bench, looking completely defeated.
After who-knows-how-long, Yu Shuhua’s angry voice came, "He Ye."
He Ye slowly looked up, his eyes red.
Yu Shuhua’s anger turned into pity as she quickly walked up to He Ye, raising her hand as if to touch his cheek but thinking better of it considering the unpleasant circumstances.
Her tone significantly softer, she said, "Xiao Ye, do you plan to keep waiting here? Cheng Zhiwei won’t meet with you."
He Ye didn’t speak, just sat quietly.
Yu Shuhua took a seat beside him, pleading desperately, "Originally, you could have worked at your own family’s company, which would have been wonderful."
"And there’s Wen Yi..." Yu Shuhua brought up Wen Yi, feeling uneasy, as she hadn’t known that was the He family’s chosen marriage partner for He Ye, and had spoken unfavorably about that girl. After being scolded, she realized just how prestigious Wen Yi’s background was.
Speaking of which, this matter was Cheng Zhiwei’s fault – if not for Wen Yi being with her, Yu Shuhua wouldn’t have said those things.
She was truly a jinx.
"The arranged marriage with Wen Yi didn’t work out, and your father is already very angry. If he finds out you’re waiting here for a woman instead of working, will he let you into the company?"
Yu Shuhua was frantic.
For years, she had hoped He Ye would join the company, preferably to become the heir.
But He Ye had insisted on working on his own.
Just when there was finally a chance, how could he not cherish it?
But no matter what she said, He Ye remained indifferent.
Yu Shuhua, losing her patience, sternly said, "He Ye, I’m telling you, you and Cheng Zhiwei are absolutely impossible, unless I die."
She had already used suicide to stop him once, and she could do it countless more times if necessary, unless He Ye disowned her as his mother.
He Ye’s shoulders shook, and he slowly raised his head,
Yu Shuhua, heartened, hurriedly added, "Xiao Ye, mom is only thinking of your best interest, by working at our company, you’ll make dad happy, and I can rest easy."
"And besides, when they see how outstanding you are, they will respect us, mother and son, more, and even your sister won’t mistreat you."
Between the lines was the hope to earn respect from the He family.
But respect isn’t given by others, it’s earned by oneself.
"Do you really want to stay there that much?" He Ye finally spoke, his tone indifferent.
Yu Shuhua nodded fervently, "We are, after all, a family."
She added, "Mingzhu thinks the same."
He Ye curled his lips, showing a cold, mocking smile, "Really?"
Did He Mingzhu really want him to join the company?
More likely, she wanted to take over his studio and kick him out.
But since she was so ruthless, he might as well comply with their wishes.
He straightened his knees and slowly stood up. "Fine, I’ll go back with you."
